A Christmas Tale
Beware the Krampus-for Narrator and Band
By Randall D. Standridge
Item: 00-44992
Series: Young Symphonic
Grade 2.5
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
In some European Christmas traditions, Saint Nick (Santa Claus) does not work alone. He travels with the ""Krampus,"" a ""Christmas Devil"" who doles out punishment to bad boys and girls on Christmas Eve. This work serves as a darkly delightful Christmas piece, intended to educate, entertain, and creep out your audience. The poem ""Beware the Krampus"" (written by the composer) helps frame the piece as familiar carols ""The Ukranian Bell Carol,"" ""Up on the Housetop,"" ""Jolly Old St. Nicholas,"" and other holiday favorites are distorted. This was so fun to play as trumpet! We had to change a few of the lyrics, but it was so good regardless

So my band has so much fun when we play this so we made it a band tradition to play it every Christmas concert. Its been going on for 6 years (that I know of)

I first heard this in a high school concert (my younger sister doesn't play band) and the screams in the school performance scared the actual crap out of me

I help at the HRS facility in my area and some of the animals we get in have been terribly abused by children. One rabbit came to us after her young "owner" cut her ears off with scissors! I think this piece might set the little sadists straight.

I'm sorry to hear that but the thing is that least little kids abusing animals are stupid rather than actively malicious. As awful as it is, it is unfortunately just stupid kid behavior. It's not the same thing as an older person who enjoys hurting animals on purpose. This is why young kids shouldn't be allowed to have pets unless their parents are willing to supervise them and teach them that pets are living creatures and not toys. It's ultimately their parents' fault for not doing their job. (Btw this is coming from somebody who still feels insane guilt about basically abusing so many of his pet budgies as a kid.)
