A moment of silence for those playing high gain for the first time who practiced not touching any other strings while playing thinking it was a good thing.
I played classical guitar for 10 years when I started learning electric guitar. It felt illegal to touch the strings intentionally. I couldn't do it😂 My brain was stopping me

Many teachers completely ignore this important technique, or they introduce it at such a late point their students have to relearn how to play. Just imagine you are used to playing a note without muting the open strings which will vibrate, now you have to concentrate on muting strings, this really slows their progress and breeds frustration. I learned this as a kid when a year into learning I could tell there was something wrong, then after messing around a bit I realized open strings were sounding without being struck. I thought my guitar had a problem so I asked my teacher and only then did he tell me about muting strings. It took ages to fix the problem as my brain was used to playing a particular (wrong) way.
@AlfredPotterGuitar5 жыл бұрын
Yes! But you have to be so careful when teaching beginners or else you will overload them. It really can be tricky for both teacher and student in that regard. When you chuck in the task of muting to a complete beginner (when they are already struggling enough as it is) they can get almost frustrated to tears :(
@laughingachilles5 жыл бұрын
@@AlfredPotterGuitar Oh I agree it wouldn't be fair to throw it at someone who can't even play basic chords yet lol, but I think it needs to be introduced, albeit slowly, a great deal sooner than most teachers are accustomed to doing. I cannot tell you how hard it was to fix the problem after a year of playing (I was a dedicated learner). At that point my brain had no doubt set down some strong circuits because of repetition and I constantly had to stop and slow down as I tried to fix it. It almost put me off the instrument. Some simple exercises early on, one string at a time, would have been a nice gentle introduction for a beginner which would act as a foundation to be built upon. As long as the teacher made it clear to not concentrate too much on it for now, then over time mix it in, if that makes sense?
@AlfredPotterGuitar5 жыл бұрын
That is exactly my process. Bit by bit. Yeah if you don't tell them they might get that critical doubting thought that maybe guitar isn't for them. Tragic stuff
@laughingachilles5 жыл бұрын
@@AlfredPotterGuitar You are correct of course and I would never argue with your expertise as a teacher. I was maybe venting a little because of both my own experience and a number of people I know who had the same problem. I have absolutely no doubt you are an excellent instructor, your video is the perfect testament to that :) Learning anything new is frustrating and it's important for a teacher to balance reward and frustration, but when certain things are left out it can cause a much greater degree of frustration when poor technique has to be corrected. I only stayed with guitar because I was a stubborn kid, as an adult I'm described in far less flattering terms lol.

Then we spend most of our remining time trying to unlearn what we learned so we mute all strings? This is ludicrous. I am just glad that i am not into metal and play with high gain. I am also glad that i came to the conclusion that i need to start muting early enough in my playing so i wont be messed up for long.

How to mute when sweep picking? Sometimes when you lift the pinky of the fretting hand really fast it bounces from the fretboard and vibrates
@kibavlood58266 жыл бұрын
Hey man how are you doing? Hope all is well; The lessons and your videos (Including your music) are a boon and helpful cant deny that. I have a doubt more like an obstacle, the technique you taught is flawless but what if you want to play strings with other fingers should they too imitate the way index finger is being played on the strings? For instance you play a note using the muting technique you mentioned and string skipped to play another note elsewhere, should that finger be placed like index? Example: i faced this when playing a note on the guitar and using pinky to string skip towards the thickest strings. When skipping towards the thinnest strings with another finger other than the string which your index finger is should similar technique be used? (Imitating the way index finger is placed on the fret board ) or would you suggest keeping the index finger on the board the entire time when string skipping towards the thinnest strings. Thanks once again and i know it sounds like a silly doubt but wanted to ask you. (Oh and yes you must have guessed it too much Paul Gilbert :p ) Take care man.

Hey Alfred, how about a lesson on Un-muting. I have this problem on an specific transition in a song where I subconsciously left hand mute a note I'm not supposed to because of the angle I'm playing at. It's Jimi Hendrix Little Wing intro, at the end of bar 3. Unfortunately the Tabbed version is on Rocksmith 2014 and Sony already blocked the video with that version of the tab. So I'll try my best to explain it. Apologies if I offer too much info or confuse you. What I'm trying to do is going from a two string bar on the notes D and G (5th fret 5th and 4th strings) to a hammer on on the 7th fret on the A note (7th fret on the 4th string) to then switching fingers over, physically speaking: From: Bar with the index finger on the 5th fret with the 5th and 4th strings AND ring finger on the 7th fret 5th string To: Index finger on the 5th fret 4th string and Ring finger on the 7th fret 5th string. So basically the movement is like doing a Parachute Lunge: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIWug2uNqMqqaZo with your fingers. The problem I'm having is that most of what's played on that bar requires barring with the index until that point where the parachute lunge happens, what I end up doing is that I mute the 4th string with my ring finger when it goes from the 4th string on the 7th fret to the 5th string on that same fret. I understand that bringing the thumb down would probably help but I've realized that I've actually had that habit for a long time and want to get rid of doing it involuntarily. Thanks!

great lesson bro :) but i have a minor problem i been practicing this technique and the problem arises when i play the D string like how do you mute the high E while playing D, what i saw was to bring in the right hand and use the palm to mute the high E but i end up disrupting the D string with my right hand palm when i bring in my right hand to mute the high E. Is my angle of my right hand wrong? or am i doing something bad when i bring in the right hand cause i can mute all strings when i am playing the G, B and high E. its just the lower E muting that seems the problem and i am fine with muting the A string with index and others as you mentioned, just the high E that's the problem.
@AlfredPotterGuitar8 жыл бұрын
Hi! Remember that the fretting hand is responsible for the thinner strings and the picking hand is responsible for the fatter strings. So at no point should the picking hand be muting the high e. To cleanly play the D string you will need to fretting hand mute the high e, b and g strings. Meanwhile your picking hand will mute the A and low E.

But how do I quickly (like 222 bpm 16 notes quickly) change between muted and clean picking when I'm e.g. ridding of the lowest string? Do I move my right hand between "on the bridge" and "in front of the bridge" in ultra speed? Everyone says it's a sweet spot but to me it seems like it's at least 1-2 cm. It feels like rubbing my guitar because I slide my right hand so much up an down the strings ??
@AlfredPotterGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Damn that's some speed. Well anyway, I find a major component is how hard you press your mute against the strings.
@lorkhan6104 жыл бұрын
@@AlfredPotterGuitar Haha I was exaggerating :D Your explanation sounds like I should rest my right hand just slightly on the strings even if they are supposed to sound clean? The thing is, I'm kind of running out of strings to rest on: When I'm playing D string I can rest on A and E, when I'm playing A I can rest on the E string. But when I'm playing the lowest string, there is no string to rest on above... And placing my hand on the body feels wrong because it's a lower positioning than on the strings and creates a weird angle to play the lowest string. So people suggest to place the hand in the bridge instead but that also feels wrong because while playing all the other strings I had to move my right hand UP, but now that I'm playing the lowest string, I have to move my right hand BACK (on the bridge). And when I want to palm mute I have to move it in front of the bridge again. Is that right because it feels kind of odd?

You overanalyze to an insane degree just like me. Every thought you've just listed are ones I've had, haha. My solution was to just never play unmuted on the Low E. Sorry if that's a cop out.
@AlfredPotterGuitar4 жыл бұрын
I will say this, though. If you want to tremolo pick on the Low E string unmuted there is one decent solution: upward pickslanted elbow pivot picking. (Brendon Smalls does this). I almost didn't mention it because I'm one of these jerks who sees elbow picking as dishonorable =\ yes, even though one of my biggest idols (Vinnie Moore) does it!
@mbessle5102 Жыл бұрын
@@AlfredPotterGuitar @lorkhan610 Sounds exactly like my situation too! Love Brendan Small's playing too btw. I have the same frustration with low E. I'm experimenting with a thumb over approach, heavy palm muting like you said, and even using my pointer finger to mute the low E (tough to coordinate). I feel like with high gain, you gotta double up on the muting. I still haven't quite figured it out. You probably seen Troy Grady's Cracking the Code? He talks about elbow vs wrist picking. If I remember right, he says elbow picking can be faster, but more exhausting.

I cant mute at all ? I can press all my sting but they still ring ?
@NikkotineMusic5 жыл бұрын
You don't press in the strings, you place your fingers on them without applying enough pressure to fret them

This is pretty clear when you play riffs but what if you alternate pick you're trying to cross strings fast? Like very fast. I don't have time to reposition my picking hand to mute my lower string when I cross to the higher string and it sounds like crap :'-(

You need to look up string tracking. I did a video on it.

If possible, can you please tell me how Marty Friedman's picking style works with regard to muting?

Hahah, I can't begin to imagine
@mbessle5102 Жыл бұрын
Does he use a upward pick slanting technique like Michael Batio? If so, Troy Grady has a video about this, and claims it's because he uses high gain, which surprisingly, when you pluck a note, it overpowers the other strings that might be ringing making muting unnecessary. I tried it by turning the gain up to 10, and there's some truth. It's fine for shredding, but you still need muting for other techniques.

I use les paul model with gauge 11-48. The G string rings even when I touch it with the playing finger to try to mute it when using high gain. And I can't place my picking hand on it when I play solos. Anyone else facing this issue? Please advise.
@AlfredPotterGuitar2 жыл бұрын
Certain frets, with high gain, will continue to ring even when unfretted (like the 12th fret of the G string). These are what I call loud frets and are due to vibrations within the guitar body causing resonance at that pitch's frequency.

How to fret hand mute while bending?
@brianbergmusic528811 ай бұрын
In my experience, it usually boils down to pushing the strings sideways instead of at an angle. If you do this, the index finger of your left hand will automatically be touching the higher treble strings. Interestingly enough, this also makes the strings easier to bend because the resistance from the fretboard itself is lessened.

When i playing fifth string "cobain" power chords how Can i mute the sixth string?
@AlfredPotterGuitar2 жыл бұрын
The picking hand mutes in the same way regardless of what you're doing, but the difference is this: - If you are muting lower strings not being played, it's called "Picking Hand Muting" - If you are muting strings which are being played, it's called "Palm Muting"

By picking hand muting. Place your hypothenar on the Low E string at the bridge to dampen it (look up palm anatomy to locate the hypothenar)

You didn’t at all explain how to do this…. holding the string by the frets just makes a different note play. I don’t get it.
@AlfredPotterGuitar2 жыл бұрын
You rest your index finger flat across the higher strings not being played to stop them vibrating (making noise), you shouldn't be actually pressing down - you don't want a note to sound out.
