17 does not only equal to 1X17 or -1X-17. 17 equals to many other multiplication. We can find infinite number of solutions. For example 17 also equals to (root2) x 1/(17x root2)

That's a great point! This solution is focused on finding a specific integer solution.

You should point out that 17 is prime and therefor only these two factorisations are possible.

Why you are looking only into integer factors? You never mentioned any limitations. It could be that original question was so formulated, but here not. If we are talking math, we need to talk precisely. For example: If we take 2b+1=8.5 and 2a+1=2, wee get: b=3.75 and a=0.5 =>a+b=4.25 You can check it in first equation: 0.5+2x0.5x3.75=0.5+3.75+3.75=0.5+7.5=8 And you can find many more solutions in that case.
