“The Willows” is such a wonderful story. The Danube evolves from a small backwater then to fast charging rapids and finally to a vast swamp hosting gently swaying willows and sand bars that arise from thin air then disappear. The perfect backdrop for the ensuing horror.

Just read this story for the first time, and absolutely loved it. Tons of great descriptions/phraseology, and the conceptual development is fantastic. Feeling hugely inspired after my first read. You're right - this will stick with me long after I've read it (may read it more times as well).

Great review, thank you. Algernon Blackwood is one of the most underrated Horror Writers of all time in my opinion. His stories cpature one in in the first sentences. He knows how to give one the chills without getting too obvious about it. My favorite story from him is "The threefold cord"... just a short story and not very well known, but in my opinion one of his best.

I was introduced to A.B. through H.P.L. I think one can certainly see blackwoods style of rich and verdant descriptions and his allusion to a grander metaphysical fear/fascination ( of nature) had a detectable impact on Lovecraft. I do admit to retaining Blackwood on the night stand, for light reading before bed, of late. enjoyed the video.

One of my favorite horror stories of all time, others that I'd put in the list from Blackwood would be "Garden of Survival", "Man whom the trees loved", " Dance of death" and "Victim of Higher Space."

Before television too! I love him, have most of his works-even the children’s stuff; have not read them all yet lol Favorite changes ‘wood of the dead’ ‘regeneration of lord Ernie’ ‘the sacrifice’ ‘the centaur’ ‘man whom the trees loved’ I recommend ‘starlight man’ by mike Ashley-the revised version, a biography of A.B he had an adventurous life!

Always good to hear that the historical / cultural links between US and Britain are still there . They are slowly disappearing of course but they may last another few years ? . I'm always amazed at US horror fans knowledge and love of Hammer Films too . We seem to be the only two countries that appreciate their brilliance ...!

The Willows is a slow creep of a story. Algernon Blackwood is one of my favorite writers of the uncanny/horror. He ranks with Arthur Machen, William Hope Hodgson and Ambrose Bierce, all great writers of that era.

I have been listening to an audio version of this short story. Somehow, I think my mind drifted and I didn't understand why they were taking the trip. So I've had to go back to listen and I'm still trying to figure out what the story is about.
