Love your newer stuff but it's cool to go back and see the progression. This one's still pretty hardcore!

I finally had time to watch this first segment. Impressive but I have to say pizza and a beer at a restaurant along the way is envious. That “sand cliff” at about 6:30 minutes in is an esker, glacial deposit, common along many waterways in the north country. Nice work guys.
@NorthernScavenger6 жыл бұрын
Haha we were not planning on doing this but it just happened to work out. We were behind schedule so originally it was an idea to get food quickly. Swing in, grab pizza and keep going. Then the pizza wasn't ready by the time we pulled in so we grabbed a beer. I don't think we will ever have a moment like that on a trip again....thanks for watching

Your canoe is made in my home state, Minnesota. The kids and I used to rent them for our Boundary Waters trips. Now we all own our own canoes. Mine is a Langford Northwind made in Canada, the country of my birth. That route sure was a challenge! Good for you for keeping on keeping on!

Awesome part 1 guys. You really captured the torture that is the Big East. Looking forward to part 2!!
@NorthernScavenger6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We always find it is the most difficult parts that are the best for filming. The problem with that is that usually you are using your full mental capacity to deal with the situation and its hard to get the energy to stop and get the camera out. At the same time, sometimes getting the camera out can make you laugh at those situations and help you get through them knowing you will have a great video (memory) of it!

It was the most difficult trip we had ever done and really opened our minds up to what our bodies were able to endure. Glad to hear you are enjoying the series!
@canoeman19616 жыл бұрын
Kudos for continuing to pull the cameras out with regularity, despite what must have been very tough conditions. I know when the paddling gets late in the day, the desire to say "the hell with it" with regards to filming is very strong. I find when carrying a drone, the setups are even tougher by day's end. Looking forward to part 2.
@NorthernScavenger6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! And its always the most difficult parts of a trip that look the best on camera. Can be tough to get the energy to setup when you need full mental capacity to do the task at hand. At the same time, sometimes it helps you get through those tough moments knowing that you will have a great memory of it after with the video footage.

Have either of you tried poling a canoe? I have also seen two polers in the same boat, I have yet to try that but would think it would be of great benefit in some of those up stream sloggs. cool trip will watch them all.

@@NorthernScavenger Eddy hopping, you can be pulled up stream, pick the easiest path and get it done, shallow water can be problematic, though.

we are rewatching this series got a question...everyone does the Meanest Link the same direction...is that a "rule" or would it not make sense to go the other way so you go downstream on the Big East. ...just wondering
@NorthernScavenger5 жыл бұрын
Haha great question! It is most often done this way because of all the other rivers you travel along. As difficult as the Big East was, there were a lot of other rivers we got to travel down.

I really don’t know why you use contacts . Just use your eye glasses and protect your eyes from what ever. Your 18 foot canoe only weighs probably 40lb or not much more. We did that with canvas covered canoes 80 lbs 15 footers . And 80 lb canvas canoe canoe packs . The gear now days is so much lighter. We did north of Superior rivers and 150 mile paddle. And would loose 25/30 Lbs of body weight on some of those trips. It separates the men from the boys . Great memories. Take lots of pictures and enjoy everything about your trip. Thanks 🇨🇦👍
