ALICE AR Mag Pouch modification

If you have an ALICE rig like me, try modifying the mag pouches to remove the grenade holders. It really makes the pouches more useful and they fit better on a belt or pack.

Try using a shoulder harness (Y or H style). That is what they issued us to use with the ALICE belt and pouches. It will help distribute your load, especially if you wand to carry your Beretta and canteen. Water is a necessity in a survival situation. The grenade pouches can be used to hold a hatchet or ice axe, or even collapsable hiking poles. Just a suggestion.

I actually have two Y harnesses that I use with my belt rig, sometimes just the belt and sometimes with the harness depending on how I rig up the belt.

I use my grenade pouches as an electrical tape holder and an l lamp holder. In my other one I keep empty or use airsoft grenades in them for airsoft

When carrying magazines, carry them upside down. It keeps debris out of the magazine and makes for quicker reload time.

Those magazine pouches were designed for usgi style magazines versus pmags. You'd be better served by using some form of MOLLE style pouch rather than the ALICE style for pmags.

Playing with the magazine pouches, you can get 5(five) m-1 garand enbloc clips in one pouch. Put 3(three) in the bottom, bullets down, use the cardboard inserts and 2(two) on top of the 3 sideways. The clip on one side and other one, the clip in the opposite direction. The older pouches have the magazine divider straps inside, cut them out. Also, remove the two Grenade pouches. Depending on your waistline, you can get 4 to 6 pouches on your belt along with 2 canteens and butt pack.

Grenade pockets on ALICE pouches are convenient to use for snacks (turnips, onions, potatoes).

Did the same thing about 10 years back when I decided a bug-out bag would be a good idea. Tsunami in Japan was my wake up call. I configured a large ALICE and incorporated 4 mag pouches on that for critical gear, ie. hip flask of Double distilled Irish whiskey, Cuban cigars, tobacco+papers, jerky and some tools. See? Like I said, critical gear. I was thinking that gittin outa dodge might be a little out of the ordinary and by the time I got to wherever I'd be out of breath (smoker, remember?) and in dire need of some comfort. I think I have that covered. No grenades here to worry about so like you I removed the side pockets. I have a few more that are the handiest darn things. Going for a bicycle ride with your honey? Pop a couple mag pouches on your belt and drop in a couple of cold beer. She will roll her eyes and smile. Seriously, they are extremely versatile and hard to do without.

I have only done this with airsoft weapons but the grenade pouches can actually work as a holster forcsmall pistols such as glocks, berettas, and the m1911. It’s pretty handy. You just put it in with the barrel down and then close the button over it.

I just saw this video and I know its six years ago but if youre out in the woods, you may want to rethink cutting off the grenade loops. I bring this up because you said in your video you dont carry grenades. When I worked for the Sheriff's Department doing Search and Rescue, even though we had radios we also carried survival gear. One of the pieces of survival gear we carried were 2 smoke grenades in 2 colors. Normally a red and a white colored grenade. The reason I say you should carry this is they can be used for signaling for help. A good company that makes smoke grenades very similar to military style smoke grenades is a company called Enola Gaye Mil-X Smoke Grenades. You can also search for military style smoke grenades but youre looking at spending $60+ dollars for one of those. Enola Gaye Mil-X grenades are about $30. Also you can use the loops to hang other tools you made want to consider as other people have mentioned

I actually use the grenade pouches for holding a military issue angle head light. They are pretty good for 75 to 100 round paintball pods as well. If you don't need the grenade pouches, they also have a variant that was made to work with Kalashnikov magazines. Those don't have the grenade pouches and are identical otherwise but, hold AK magazines.

You don't really have to remove them, you can just fold them back. I don't really use them so i cut them off, it makes putting the pouches side to side easier...

I only use one of these magazine pouches because I can use the grenade holders for a hatchet and an extra tourniquet, otherwise it's a 200rd SAW pouch or 2 qt canteen cover for carrying multiple magazines MACV-SOG style.

This is a good modification but instead of a razor blade I used a seam ripper from a sewing kit. It does the job without risking a hand injury or cutting through the pouch you're working on. I also kept one grenade loop intact for holding a flashlight.

You know you can use the grenade pouch straps to collapse the grenade pouches... Feed the strap through the middle, tighten, and snap.

A seam ripper (look in the sewing section) will remove the grenade pouches better than a xacto knife. Less chance of boogering up the material of the carrier.

Loop some paracord through the top of the Alice clips for a quick detach IFAK. Maybe attach a tourniquet on the side too. This old stuff is great and versatile.

Good idea. I use the ALICE pouches for a variety of things and they have never let me down. Right now I am using a mag pouch for my main water kit. It has my entire Sawyer Mini filter in it as well as iodine tablets and chlorine dioxide tablets.

Recommend you keep one of the grenade pouches. Believe it or not it can be very useful. I have used it to keep my Maglite in it. And the Maglite can be used as a weapon if the time comes.

They are pretty tough. I think that you would have to really try to break them off, never seen one that was broken

They made a couple of different generations of these, some of the older ones had the divider which can be removed. These are pretty tough and do not seem to get very dirty but I suppose you could wash them...

These would be VERY tight with either M1A or G3 mags. Take a measurement and see how they compare to M16/AR mags which is what they are made for...

i would have kept the two retainers inside the mag holder. when you take one or two mags out they keep the magazines from making noise if you ever use them in a serious way.
