A new soundie with Alice in it has come to our attention! Thanks to Susan Delson for pointing her out!
Alice appears at: 0:18 (far right), and 1:11 (front and center, then moving to the right)
Notes by jazz historian Mark Cantor:
This soundie is titled 'Sugar Hill Masquerade', although it is actually the standard 'After You've Gone'. It was recorded on December 18, 1941 by Gene Krupa and his orchestra, the familiar arrangement from the period featuring trumpet star Roy Eldridge.
The soundtrack was put on the shelf, and the "action" was not filmed until September 18, 1942 - not an altogether rare soundie practice. The small band you see on screen at the beginning, led by trumpet Walter Fuller, has nothing to do with the music we hear on screen.
The sideline performers include the following; note the way Alice's name appears on the sideline contract:
Edna Mae Harris, Slim Thomas, Ray Harris, Carrie Frederick, Charlie Morrison, Frances Urline Jackson, Dorothy Moses, Thelma Hereford, Estella Marrino, Alyce Barker [chorus girl to far right], Florence Alexander.

My Grandmother, Jessie, was one of the original Lindy Hoppers at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem in the late 20s and 30s. I knew her as an old lady, and it's hard for me to believe that she actually did this jitterbug dancing in her youth. Here's to all those beautiful Grandmas and gallant Grandpas. Love you madly!

Alice had no children, so she could not have been your grandma. That's not a skin infection. Alice more than likely had a liver ailment. Thus, the liver medication caused some medically induced vitiligo.

I love the nicknames they used to give musicians and athletes back then. "Hot Lips" Fuller and "Rubber Arms" Marshall were performing in this video, and some of the most famous Negro Leagues ballplayers were "Cool Papa" Bell, "Jelly Roll" Gardner, and "Steel Arm" Johnny Taylor.

Dancing professionally seems so much more enjoyable in this time period. The movement is so much more loose and lively, unlike today, when everyone is trying to be as sharp and robotic as possible, throwing feeling and authenticity to the wayside.

Oh, indeed. This was normal tempo for jazz musicians back in the days before Bebop and cool jazz took over. Also The African-Amarican dancers wanted the tempo at a certain speed, as this felt natural for them. I could give you much more story, perhaps another time.
