Guitarist is Jerry Cantrell, and he also wrote some songs for the band, Rooster being one of them.!! Their voices compliment each other. Awesome Duo together.

Jerry wrote the majority of AIC songs with Layne co-writing some and Layne wrote some on his own also. Their vocal harmony was unmatched and inspired bands like Drain STH.

SLUDGE FACTORY was aimed at the Record Execs, Don Ienner and Michele Anthony and manager Susan Silver. They had a band meeting which was really an intervention at the beginning of the Tripod recording sessions. Layne said he wanted to try rehab for a 14th time. Susan nixed that idea and effectively made Layne responsible for 45 people (including Jerry, Mike, Sean, Layne himself and her) by telling Layne, "There are 45 people depending on you to write and perform." Layne's mother heard about the "intervention" and asked why they couldn't replace Layne while he was in rehab. Susan told her, "Nancy, you don't get it, LAYNE IS ALICE IN CHAINS." Mind you, ten months later, Susan would tell Jon Weiderhorn that leaving out a member of an article wasn't Alice In Chains. So, that lyrics, "Call me up, congratulations ain't the real why / There's so pressure besides brilliance let's say by day nine" So, at 6 am one day while Layne was working on his vocals with producer/engineer Toby Wright, the phone rang and it was Don Ienner and Michele Anthony, and they told him, "Layne, we just wanted to congratulate you on the Mad Season Above album going gold! Awesome sales there. We’ve been clocking the time you’ve spent in the studio, and it seems a little excessive. We’re giving you nine days to finish [Tripod]." The 9 days pissed Layne off, because the album wasn't ready. In retaliation, he dragged the recording sessions out for months (his addiction was getting bad during the Tripod sessions but NOT as bad as it was during Unplugged). Jerry started the Tripod album as a solo project in November-December 1994, but knew he couldn't do anything better than when AIC were together. Layne did Mad Season Live at the Moore on April 28, 1995, and joined AIC to record Tripod on April 29, 1995. So from the time Jerry started the album as a solo project in November-December 1994 to August 1995 when they finished the album (It was released on November 7, 1995) was about 10 months for Jerry and 4-5 months for Layne. For comparison of AIC recording time: the Facelift album took roughly a month, Sap Ep took about a week, the Dirt album took a couple of months because they were a week or so into recording Dirt when the LA Riots broke out after the Rodney King verdict came down and the band escaped to Joshua Tree and hung out there with Slayer's Tom Araya for a bit. Jar of Flies took a week to record and another week to mix. The lyrics, "Now the body of one soul I adore wants to die / You have always told me you'd not live past twenty-five / I say stay long enough to repay all who caused strife" The lyrics there are about his former fiancee Demri and how she swore she'd never live a long life. She was a drug addict like he was. She had a pacemaker put in due to endocarditis one of two heart surgeries that LAYNE paid for. She also had 2 lung surgeries that Layne also paid for. But, she was not grateful for the pacemaker or the man who paid for it because he loved her more than she loved him. In October 1996, she was living with an older guy when she died of a bacterial infection from a previous overdose. Demri’s death devastated Layne. A few months later, Layne asked her mother for the teddy bear Demri had with her in the hospital and a few other things. It took another few weeks and an accidental meeting on a busy street to exchange the items. The consensus was that Layne never got over Demri’s death. He used her death as the catalyst to go into a drug-induced tailspin in which he would take his addiction to lengths few could imagine or sustain. With MTV Unplugged, when Layne finally gave the Okay to do it. They were supposed to rehearse in Seattle but NO one showed up. Sean, Mike and Jerry would show up at different times but Layne would be MIA or Layne would show up for one or two songs and then leave. When they finally got to New York, Sean and Mike had an argument with Jerry because they thought with Layne's condition and addiction, he wouldn't be able to hit the high notes. Jerry was the ONLY ONE who was confident that Layne could do it. When you watch DOWN IN A HOLE Unplugged, and Layne hits that high note, you see Jerry look over at Sean and Mike with this "I TOLD YOU SO!" smirk. Layne did it again on ROOSTER Unplugged and Jerry did that same smirk. In reality, Layne screwed up the first and second verse of SLUDGE FACTORY 8 times, though they only kept 1 time in the DVD. The Unplugged show in 1996 is so heartbreaking to watch because Layne was deep in his heroin addiction (and yes, I know he was doing other drugs on top of Heroin). His liver was damaged from the years of drug use. He was just high enough to do the show to fight off withdrawal symptoms and he didn't get dope sick. He was such a ghost of himself during Unplugged. (Of course, Jerry had food poisoning) All Jerry saw when he looked over at Layne was his best friend was going to die soon due to the path Layne had chosen for his life. That show was filmed on April 10, 1996, premiered in May 1996. They did four shows with KISS in June-July 1996, after which Layne survived an overdose and became a recluse. After that, it was a six-year-long slow suicide. The entire show was a success because Layne DID have a powerful performance despite his condition. He proved to his cynical bandmates that he could still sing the high notes and he pulled it all off beautifully while the same four guys (Metallica) who had mocked him for his addiction sidelining Alice In Chains from ever doing extended tours sat in the front row. The mistakes he made screwing up SLUDGE FACTORY (and I think he screwed up GOT ME WRONG once or twice, but Toby Wright didn’t keep that in editing) were endearing, at least to me. Yes, Don Ienner, Michele Anthony and Susan Silver were in the front row, but the mistakes didn’t take away from the performance, it added something to the performance that, had it been removed after everyone had seen it, wouldn’t have made the show what it was.

Are you going to do any Mad Season Sebs? The first track is haunting...Jerry Cantrell was the guitarist and wrote many of the songs.. he's the engine that makes AIC go lol. That soul came from pain, lots and lots of pain. Alice in Chains helped me not feel alone when i was my loneliest, alone and in pain, i needed their music. Guilt is the weapon of choice for all covert narcissists...

This song is a response to the record executives. In 95 while in the studio recording their self titled album Layne received a phone call from Columbia records congratulating him on his MadSeason album Above going gold then told him that they needed him to finish the Alice record in 9 days. You'll notice this in the lyrics. "Call me up congratulations ain't the real why...there's no pressure besides brilliance let's say by day nine." The same executives that called him were sitting in the front row..Metallica was as well.

Layne Father left him at the age of 8, and was raised solely by his Mother. While reading a news article Layne's Father (who was an heroin addict) found out Layne was famous, and sought him out for the sole purposes of easy access to drugs. In an interview Layne himself admits that his own Father did heroin with him. Layne died of a drugs overdose April 5th 2002, and was found by his Mother 2 weeks later, and yet his Father Phill Staley is still alive. In my opinion he is partly reasonable for Layne death...... RIP Layne you will never be forgotten......

Good morning from New England...Just came across ur channel looking for AIC reactions and this is one of the best out there... Although MTV edited it out Layne flubs the lyrics 3 times before getting them right...And yes Layne's dad left when he was very young and only came back into his life when he saw Layne had become a rock star and not only used him for drugs and $ he ENCOURAGED Layne to do dope and other drugs... I can relate bc my dad did that to me with booze...AIC have gotten me thru some seriously dark times when I was an active junkie and now that I've been sober for 13 yrs they continue to inspire me to stay that way...Also being a drummer Sean Kinney is a HUGE influence on my playing...thx...✌️🤘

You’re correct the harmonies are always between Jerry Cantrell who’s the guitarist/2nd vocalist and primary songwriter and Layne who was obviously the lead vocalist. Most of their biggest hits were written solely by Jerry including the lyrics like rooster/down in a hole/would?/them bones Etc, he’s one of the best songwriters ever and the duo of him and Layne was a once in a lifetime pairing, one of the best vocalist ever paired with one of the best songwriters ever and together the best harmonizers in hard rock/metal history.

Jerry Cantrell is the guitarist. He was a founder of the band. The most iconic alice in chains unplugged has to be nutshell! I'd say you should do that next! There's a back story of him and his addiction and he was having withdrawals and shot up before the show. And nutshell is the first song he comes out too and it is so lyrically powerful knowing the story and that is some of their last performances together.

This song isn’t actually about MTV. Its about their record label calling Layne Staley and congratulating him about his success on his new album with Mad Season. His manager then said “By the way, you have nine days to finish your album with Alice in Chains. He is calling his record label a corporate factory pushing out commercialized sludge. Loved the vid tho.

The song came about bc as they were recording what fans call Tripod or the dog album they were behind on schedule due to Layne's being late and or being high. At the same time Layne did an album with Mike McCready of Pearl Jam under the band name Mad Season. The Mad Season album hit gold and the music execs used it as an excuse to call Layne and congratulate him on that but the call was really just to chastise him and tell him they had 9 days to finish the record.. The lyrics are: ... "Call me up congratulations Ain't the real why There's no pressures besides brilliance Let's say by day 9 Endless corporate ignorance lets Me control time By the way, by the way". Layne's words always have meaning. This clip includes the cutest mistake. The soul he adores is his long time gf Demri Parrot. Alit of his songs are about her too.

its all a dig at the record executives at Sony, the "riffing" at the start is part of the song, I think hes saying that its all his record company thinks he does in his records. Someone said in another video that the people he made the song about were present in the front row during that recording which is why he might have nervously messed up the song, I also heard he actually had to restart the song about 7 times because he couldnt remember the lyrics.
