Most people think of it as sanity and madness, I think of it like this. Alice has a friend that she took to wonderland when they were chasing the rabbit, the both fell down the hole and got stuck in wonderland, and all the things her friends singing about “did the flowers say hello” and things like that, are what happened, and near the end where Alice has to choose between wonderland and earth, she tells her to stay in wonderland, and the last part was all a letter, “Did you like your unbirthday? did the Cheshire Cat smile your way?” Shes writing about all the things they did together and she’s wondering if she still does them now that she’s gone. Thanks for reading.

I see this song in a more positive light, about the Alice in questioning choosing whether she wants to stay with a maybe abusive family who shame her into being "normal", and choosing to go with a found family who accept her for who she is. In the end, she chooses the found family, happy to stay in her Wonderland. "Did the mushrooms make you grow, did the flowers say hello?" sounds like a positive environment she can spread her wings in, and "did you see through the looking glass?" sounds like her seeing what kind of future she can make herself if she tries.

I can imagine Alice's sister sitting Alice down and singing this to her before Alice has to go to a mental asylum. It has that emotion that Alice's sister would feel and at the end when they take Alice away, during that little magical sounding part at the end, her sister sees a white rabbit hopping away and follows it.

I have this really weird theory tbh of Wonderland: Wonderland is basically a dreamland, of how Alice perceives reality. She is a young girl, from a rough neighborhood, where everyone is a little bit "mad" Her father is the Mad Hatter. A young man, who constantly smokes, and drinks. His friends (March Hare and the Mouse) often comes over for a "party", and usually mess up the house. Her older sister is the Queen of Hearts. A bossy and rude girl, who often throws tantrums, when things don't go her way. She loves to tear off the heads of hers and Alice's dolls, and likes to use the heads as jewelry--to make her look "royal" The White Rabbit is a teacher figure in Alice's life. He constantly goes on and on about time and dates, and never seems to rest. Twiddle Dum and Twiddle Dee are a set of twins, in Alice's class. They are usually extremely loud and annoying, and get really bad marks. They are considered "stupid" and "good for nothing" The Catatipillar is a drug addict, near Alice's school. He often walks children home, for money. He would often cut any child off, if they go on about their lives. He hates getting reminded of his pathetic past... The king is a friend of the sister. He is extremely quiet, and often does what she says. Whenever he speaks up, he gets cut off immediately. The Cheshire Cat is a boy, who is homeless. He often teases and helps Alice, and often goes on how weird life is. He smiles a lot, and goes missing for days, before reappearing The ugly Pig baby is Alice's unborn sibling. She doesn't want a brother, and considers the thing as hideous and disgusting. The mock turtle is a young homeless woman who is always crying. When drunk, she'll rant to anyone, who will listen The Gryphon is an older boy, who often teases Alice, and makes fun of others. He is extremely sarcastic, but Alice doesn't understand his humour

This song feels as if Alice is singing it to herself. She has grown up, left her childhood behind. Yet now, she has made a very difficult decision and not sure if it was the right choice. Now she sings this song to herself to contemplate her decision.

It's strange that people keep saying that this song is about Alice choosing between sanity and insanity when the original books had nothing to do with that. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass were about the dreams, fantasies and imagination of a 7-year-old girl named Alice. Just like all little children young Alice has a wild imagination that doesn't always make sense, she's not crazy she's just a normal child trying to make sense of the world around her. Really when you think about it Alice in wonderland is basically a story about the wonders of childhood and seeing the world through a child's eyes. When I hear this song I imagine that Alice is growing up and is being told to forget about her childhood dreams, while Alice is unsure about all this and needs to make a decision: either do as she's told and leave her dreams behind or hold onto those dreams and stay in her "wonderland"

Actually the wonderland has a lot to do with madness (that's why it's also the core of the Surrealistic movement). There are many clue maybe not about madness, but regarding her loneliness, sadness and insecurity. She may not be mad, i don't think she is, but she is not the innocent and pure child we usually see her like

Jacob Willis How can I like them? Well, lets see, I separate the movies from the books. I rate them on their own merits. I never read the books so, I can't say anything against the movies because I don't have a basis....I liked the scenery and I liked the actors and Actresses in it. I'm perfectly allowed to like the movies if I want. Its my preference... so, thank you for your opinion but, let me have mine...
@jacobwillis75968 жыл бұрын
Lexi Feldmann I actually wanted a conversation, If I hurt your feelings I'm sorry. I wanted to understand how people enjoy it . Alice was my childhood and it was pretty much the books and when basing a movie on a existing property it only makes sense to judge it based on that property. I mostly disliked that the actress was boring in the first one and also in the first one it wanted to be a war story. I have only watched the first. Also the Red Queen and White Queen were in the second book "Through the Looking Glass" not Wonderland. They also used the name Red Queen for Queen of Hearts which are different people. Also where are the kings ?
@lexifeldmann53538 жыл бұрын
Jacob Willis Sorry, been stressful in my family lately so, a little on the short temper side. I liked the movies because I liked the FX, scenery....far as plots go? weak at best...but it had Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. two of my absolutely top favorite actors. I liked the second movie Alice better because she had much more personality but the plot was bizarre...more so at least than the first one.
@jacobwillis75968 жыл бұрын
Lexi Feldmann I now little of actors and less in the ways of the second movie so I have nothing to base those on. I can agree the scenery was awesome. The Alice stories have been a sore spot for me because so many people want to bring in insanity and drugs instead of what it is meant to be, the only ones to actually do that well where two games. Also I hope your family situation gets better .
@lexifeldmann53538 жыл бұрын
Jacob Willis I like the darker alice stories, even though they are massssiivvvvvllllyyyy made up...I read a few little snippets of Carrol's real writing...maybe its just because I never looked for his stuff.

I see this song as people mocking Alice, teasing her with all the things that Alice has previously stated about Wonderland. Almost as if they’re trying to make her feel as though she’s losing it. Especially with all of the questions, it would be bringing it all back to Alice whereas the others wouldn’t understand as they haven’t been there. They don’t have the power that she does and that’s why they are teasing her, they don’t believe in it. Anywaysss that just my opinion of it😂

Personally this makes me imagine Alice at the start running from classmates, who bullied her for her stories about Wonderland. They throw insults and punches at her, and then leave. Next day the bullies catch her outside by herself and the ring leader is holding a crochet mallet and attempts to hit her in the head with it. Alice runs with the ring leader right behind shouting the normal insults until suddenly right at the end of the second stanza they both trip and fall into a rabbit hole. Fast forward through a bunch of the meetings between Alice's Wonderland friends and the bully. Then third stanza the bully has realized her error and apologizes while pointing out that Alice will be happier here if she stayed. In response Alice says all of the insults that the bully threw at her all the time to comfort her and make it obvious that she is forgiven. Finally the last "The rabbit seems to call your name. You're late so it's time to move." Suggests that Alice has made her choice. Whether it was stay in Wonderland or return with the bully is beyond me. That however is how I imagine this song coming to being. At first a mockery and jest, turned to an apology, turned to cliffhanger.

I know the story ends with "it was all a dream" and the whole insanity/sanity thing is what one is supposed to take from it, but I like the story much more as a story of a girl that really visits another world. And in this she is debating whether she would be happier if she went back.

I've heard LOTS of A.I.W. inspired songs, but this is by far the best! Mainly because it focuses more on the actual story, rather than one character or an event that doesn't really happen. It's also the only song i've heard that focuses on the original 1951 animated movie (most focus more on the 2010 version), which is really unique and cool. Also, i may seem like im just being stupidly generous, but that's probably because i've been obsessed with the 1951 movie since i first saw it, (i was about 3-4 y/o) and i grew up with the story and characters, so seeing someone focus more on that movie (and just seeing a new song from you) really makes me happy :) That got kinda long, lol...
@RachelRoseMitchell9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, Chayse! I'm really glad you like the song. It's cool that you noticed it was based largely on the 1951 movie, that's what I was most familiar with when I wrote Hey Alice. There is another live action version with a brunette Alice that I like but I don't remember much about it, having not watched it in about a decade. I think the 1951 film captured something charming and magical :)

Alice in wonderland always has been and always will be my favourite book and film. I've read so many theories on it and it seems everyone has their own interpretation of it. The characters, the plot, the reason behind it. Is it a metaphor for her family? Do the characters represent family members? Is it just the imagination of a child? Is alice insane? And that's what I love about it. It's open to interpretation and means so much to so many people in different ways.

This song at least to me illustrates a crossroad we all reach at one point of our lives: to chose between reality and fantasy. Do we keep dreaming or do we eventually accept what we have and work with it? Truth be told the choice is always up to the individual. Both paths can lead into greatness (i.e. writers and artists that become succesfull of their imaginative work vs. people who transform their fantasies into something productive like doctors, architects engineers etc.) and both could lead to very horrid things (locking yourself into your fantasy can lead to a psychotic state of mind vs. the depression that can lead from reality coming in too hard). Both paths divide further and further and both paths shape our worldview. The metaphore of the looking glass is simply majestic as one could see two different versions througj it and the line "are you here or there or somewhere inbetween" just illustrates the point further. Our paths diverge and Alice is now upon that path. The choice is yours and it will be just the first of many that will end up shaping your life. So choose wisely.

this song is the fact that Alice needs to decide where she belongs on earth or in wonderland not choosing between sanity or craziness or any of that bullshit this song is amazing I can't believe I just now found it I'm In love 😍😍💕💕💯

This is how I portray the song. Alice has a younger sister who was six, and she was 13 when they went through the whole wonderland experience. Her younger sisters mind has been knocking back and fourth if the whole thing was real or imaginary and she is trying to get her sister to... “Knock it off, your sounding mad!!” Alice’s younger sister has a couple minutes alone with her sister and while she goes through the song she can’t decide if she is angry at her sister for leaving her alone, or if she’s angry she can’t find the determination to help prove her sister isn’t mad. And toward the end as it gets softer she realizes that her sister wasn’t mad and she wasn’t either, that wonderland is real and she feels as though it’s too late to go back. So as she looks at her sister and realizes this she hugs her and apologies for not standing with her. She realizes she wasn’t mad at her sister, she was mad at herself for trying to shrug the wonderland experience of as a choice of her imaginary and she was really arguing with herself, teasing herself, as she tried to make a point between if it really was reality and it did happen. Or she was ‘mad’ and none of this really did happen.

Charm Serenia True, Thank you I totally forgot that I wrote this comment. (Sorry long text) Even if this feeling is true and has been with me my whole life, I know that this song is for the fictional character Alice and made to be like it’s a song from that universe. But this song still hit me quite hard and it feels like it was written to or about me, because my name is Alice and I have been bullied and compared to Alice in wonderland. So I kinda wrote this comment as like an answer/or like the other side of the story/song, I know that this has nothing to do with me and I just happened to me named Alice and she just happened to wright a song that happened to put exact words on my existence. I got a bit scared when I first heard this because it is so spot on, so I wrote this comment as a way for me to put how I feel out to the universe but without anyone knowing that it’s me. So now how I feel about my existence is floating around in the universe and people will read this and know how I feel but without knowing who is feeling like this, I am okay and I am not trying to take anything away from this beautiful song and it’s creator. Just happened that this song (...) whit me and I could tell everyone and no one at the same time about how I feel, in a way that kinda just looks like Alice is answering back or maybe be another part of the story. I am not joking about feeling like shit and having a bad mental state, I just kinda made a little inside joke to myself and at the same time tell everyone and no one. Kinda my way to cope with everything •_•* T~T
