I've heard both versions and they're great. I don't know why people feel the need to compare them. Jeff sang the song his way and she sang it her way. Raw emotions from both. Some people like it, some don't. That's cool. Either way, it is what it is.

I LOVE the original AND this version. Her voice and the fact that it's a woman singing the same lyrics give the song a different meaning. Jeff's version is sad, regretful. Alice's version says, "He fucked up, but I still love him." Also the guitarist is SO into what he's doing. It's great.

I’ve been Jeff Buckley’s ardent fan since ‘96, and I can say this lady really sings with her heart. Her voice and style are obviously different from Jeff’s original, but still this rendition’s got its own power and charm. I’m glad to stumble upon this cover of Alice Smith’s.

LEE the only "white" rapper ever to be hyped was Eminem, and I think the man deserves it. personally, I only truly endorse Infinite, his first, but the man is light years ahead of Tupac in regards to overall rap skill and poetic display and that's coming from a truly devoted fan and student of hip-hop, underground and commercial alike. Tupac was mainly regarded for his skills as a poet and depth of lyrics when it comes to rapping ability in particular many many many rappers far ahead of his ability, so much so that I don't even believe he would make the top 10. Because in terms of being "" hyped up Tupac is by far one of the most overrated.

Alice is a force! I've never heard this song before, but once she covers a song I completely lose interest in the original. I'm a fool, I put a spell on you, house of the rising sun. She bleeds every note with so much passion. Her voice is powerful, flawed, vulnerable yet unapologetic like Joplin's (but a bit more controlled)
