How do you start to make a 3D body - out of a flat disc? The answer lies in the folding that happens throughout weeks 3 and 4, when the trilaminar germ disc curls from head to toe and side to side and ends up looking like a cross between a sausage and a pea pod. Watch it happen!

Very few and far between that you find videos on KZbin that actually spark your interest, ah gone are the days when I used to look like an angry mushroom with teeth. Alice Roberts has one of the most soothing voices on the planet.

Feeling slightly stressed about my MRCOG exam *tomorrow* - these are so soothing and a great way to gently revise and actually appreciate how amazing we all are, regardless of the exam outcome! Many thanks.

I was hating studying embryology but your passion literally brought a lot of nice feelings, even though I am still confused it feels like you are bringing me closer to understanding the orientation of development! Thank you

Fascinating, and the detailed illustrations you draw so reminiscent of Tony Hart of take Hart fame.

Alice, this is brilliant; the explanations and the accompanying artwork make it all so easy to follow. A question though. You say that the "heart" is now beating, but presumably at this stage it's not "pumping" anything but ticking in a vaguely similar way to peristalsis in the gut (very vaguely similar!)!

I'm disappointed there are so few views, as these drawings are exquisite! Please carry on with this fascinating subject. I have a question that I once heard in my Human Biology A-Level class back in the early 1980's is that "Embryology recapitulates phylogeny" is this statement true given that all animals that follow a common ancestry must follow a common development path...?

Thank you for another amazing video Alice, I was very intrested to hear the heart was starting to beat at just 26days, Would this imply that the Nural Nodes have formed and are regulating the heart already, it so then I assume nurons in the brain have started to form also? Still find it amazing that with so much growth that there is not any trace of a bllod supply coming from the mother? Cant wait for next video -!

I find it interesting that the ancient Egyptians believed the soul entered the body around day 49, that I believe coincides with the sexual differentiation of the embryo.

@@aliceroberts4107 It looks like the stalk migrates around the amnion. embryology.med.unsw.edu.au/embryology/index.php/Paper_-_The_Formation_of_the_Connecting_Stalk_and_the_Extension_of_the_Amniotic_Cavity_towards_the_Tissue_of_the_Connecting_Stalk_in_Young_Human_Embryos
