If you want to understand what happened with this film, and the next two films, you need to understand JJ Abrams and his "Mystery Box" philosophy. Put simply, JJ Abrams (the director for The Force Awakens and Rise of the Skywalker) has this notion that you can bring people into a story by simply setting up a bunch of interesting questions/mysteries, even if you don't personally know the answers to those questions. This causes people to become engaged and want to discuss/theorize, making people excited and drawing out fan interest for potentially years at a time. (Why yes, he was one of the chief creative leads behind Lost, why do you ask?) The problem with this philosophy is that, if you don't actually know the answers to the questions you set up, your story could end up being nonsensical, especially if (as with the sequel trilogy) it winds up falling into the hands of other creators who have their own ideas of what they want to do, and who aren't necessarily interested in solving your mysteries. Moreover, the fans get pissed if the questions *do* get answered in a way that doesn't comport with how they think it should have been. Suffice it to say, this trilogy gets a lot of hate from fans, and some of it is even justified. But a lot of those problems start from Abrams and his Mystery Box, and you can see it pretty plainly here. Chewie

@chaost454423 күн бұрын
That storytelling method can only really work in a TV show format. I found Lost and Fringe enjoyable in part because of the Mystery Box but they have 15-20+ episodes per season to flesh out those themes in that form of storytelling. It's hard to use it in a story that requires the writers to tell it in two hours. Very few films have pulled it off well.

It boggles the mind that they thought they could go into making a new trilogy for one of the biggest IPs ever WITHOUT A PLAN and somehow end up having it work out.
@Mrinsecure23 күн бұрын
@@yeshevishman It works fine for serialized formats (i.e. TV shows or comics) because you can iterate on mysteries over the course of dozens of episodes/chapters/issues. But for a single movie that needs to be completed in 1.5 to 2.5 hours, or even a trilogy that takes six to nine hours, yes, you absolutely need an answer to your big questions from the outset. You don't have time to iterate or improvise or create retroactive justifications, you nee the answer *now.* Otherwise it'll all fall apart when it comes time for a narrative payoff.

Spaarti Cylinders grow full adults quickly, with no lingering fast aging and are flash imprinted with memories and skills. These are superloyal programmed Political Officers inserted randomly into the Stormtrooper Corps, and will instantly gun down anyone acting "treasonous". With the Empire requiring everyone to be a "number not a name" you couls never tell who you were serving alongside. 3. This program was used as a "reward" for high performers and exceptional soldiers or officers. They would have their genetic material archived for use in the Empire forever as a legacy. 4. I think the two biggest issues of the sequel trilogy are that it essentially erases everything the heroes accomplished in the original trilogy, and that they didn't have an overarching story planned out when they started, they just would let each new director come up with whatever story they wanted. Plus, JJ Abrams and his mystery box approach of just creating questions he doesn't have answers to so someone else can figure it out later.

Yeah, be it in this or the novels, they had a really bad habit of undoing everything the heroes did The thrawn trilogy alone ends up portraying the rebels as a bunch of bickering incompetent idiots, introduced an anti-human bothan as one of the rebel trillogy (and hell, just portrayed every single alien character outside of thrawn, new or old, as being incompetent, evil or savage); Regressed luke into being an insecure mess (unless he was showing off to future wife mara jade, then he suddenly became calm and confident again) and just had the heroes be disrespected and disregarded over and over again.

@@Maioly Wow, what a vast misreading of one of Timothy Zahn's masterpiece trilogies, which helped to keep _Star Wars_ alive in the '80s and '90s, well before Disney bought the franchise. Zahn set up so much for the franchise, and they were used so well by other authors too, only for Disney to throw it all out, and then cherry pick elements that they wanted to use in their own weird way. Thrawn in _Rebels_ is nothing like Thrawn in these books. And let's keep Mara Jade away from Disney, if possible. She is my favourite character in the entire franchise. What nostalgia and memories I do have of the extended universe (and I went DEEP on it long before reading the thrawn trilogy) is also filled with bitterness at seeing writers retcon or sabotage each other's plots, characters and progression. I do still think its better than how the disney canon turned out so far, which has elements of that on top of corporate fuckery getting in the way and making it a lot shittier and poorly thought out overall. I am not saying the thrawn books were not influential, just that they have major issues that tend to get completely downplayed or overlooked by people when comparing it to disney stuff.

Timothy Zahn got picked to expand the universe of _Star Wars_ because he was already an accomplished sci-fi writer, and understood what was needed. He did nothing less than write would should have been the next trilogy after the OT. Unfortunately, that was never what George Lucas wanted. Well, apart from fan-made adaptations, no EU book will ever be known to movie-only fans, and that's the final fact. Doesn't matter if they're good or bad.

The rule of why there were only two Sith hasn't always existed. That rule only goes back a thousand years prior when Jedi believed the Sith were destroyed. Further back than that, there were thousands of Sith that warred with the Jedi constantly for millenia. The reason Palpatine was so powerful was because of the rule of two, which was established to eventually make the sith more powerful than the Jedi by focusing the darkside into two beings at a time. The apprentice could only become the master by defeating the current master, ensuring the strength of the Sith increases every generation. The reason Anakin was so strong was because he was the chosen one. Another reason for the rule of two was to stop infighting among the Sith. In ancient times, many weaker Sith would gang up together to defeat more powerful Sith for more power and control.

Oscar Issac actively shipped Poe and Finn After the films releass, Mark Hamil would occasionally comment how it wad sad he, Harrison, and Carrie didn’t have a scene together. Chewbaca’s actor (for just this film) is the same actor as the original trilogy, Peter Mahew, who would die. One of the co-writers of Empire Strikes Back (Lawrence Kasdan) co-wrote this script, what people don’t know is a lot of the elements of ESB were actually written by Leigh Brackett who died before the second draft of the film was written. Harrison Ford was only contractually obligated to do A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, so the carbonite stuff was done in case they couldn’t get him back for Return of the Jedi, he cane back but requested to be killed off, George talked him down, for The Force Awakens he made the same request and they agreed. Harrison in 2004 said that Han had no future or story responsibilities after ESB. In Legends, (Star Wars books/games/shows before disney bought the franchise, Han and Leia had thrrr kids - Jacen Solo, Jaina Solo, and Anakin Solo. Luke had a wife named Mara Jade and a son named Ben. Many compare Kylo to Jacen directly. The sequels stunt cast a lot of minor stormtrooper parts, imdb the the films and you’ll see. A lot of people were annoyed (Including Finn&’s actor John Boyega) because in TFA’s trailers and posters, Finn was being teased as a Stormtrooper turned Jedi only for Rey to be the surprise Jedi character. John Boyega has reposted fanart of finn as a Jedi and likes the idea of him having a Silver lightsaber. John is also a mega fan of Star Wars who had watched the shows and knows a bit of the lore. Daisy Ridley (Rey) is getting her own spinoff film, and despite rewrites, drama, some medical issues, and the sequel trilogy reception, a lot of fans really support her and want to give her something more to do. The pilot who Alicia called out for bad acting was actually 23 year old Jessica Henwick who was originally one of the people trying out for Rey. She is the same age as Daisy Ridley (also 23) Billie Lourd (Carrie Fisher’s daughter) also auditioned for Rey, but ended up getting a recurring minor role in the trilogy instead. Maisie Richardson-Sellers also auditioned for Rey, and was one of the New Republic officers who blew up. This does mean Rey was actually fairly race-blind casting as Maisie is black and Jessica Henwick is half english half Singaporean. Mark Hamil and Carrie Fisher both lost a LOT of weight for this movie. Rey is largely based (both in design and concept) on an early draft of ANH where Luke was a girl. During ESB, George included Yoda’s line of “There is another” to refer to Luke’s sister, who was someone other than Leia. George quickly changed his mind but it’s a continuation of the same concept of their being a young woman Jedi. Originally, Kylo Ren’s master / the supreme leader wasn’t meant to look like that, he was originally a “beautiful statuesque woman” but that was changed.

I wouldn't say that. Without the expanded universe the prequels kind of starve still, and I don't care about expanded universe lore and rate the films on their own two feet. Disney Star Wars does not matter in this context. I swear the quote you made is a coping method for fans of the prequels directed towards people who didn't like the prequels. Well, it doesn't work not on me anyways. I still dislike the sequels, Phantom Menace being the only one of them I liked. Is Disney Star Wars bad? WIthout a doubt. Old Republic lore / rule of 2 - Long ago the Jedi and Sith have fought countless wars, the Sith became so powerful that they formed their own empire, The Old Sith Empire. The Jedi then joined The Galactic Republic and fought the Sith Empire. Tired of the repeated generational stalemates, Sith Lord Darth Bane realized that the Sith are weak because there are too many of them. Darth Bane then created and implemented the Rule of Two; a Master and a Apprentice to kill the master and take on an apprentice, to ensure that the Sith grew more powerful and cunning with each generation. He then gathered the Sith and killed them. "Two there should be; no more, no less. One to embody power, the other to crave it."

I was honestly expecting you to watch the shows before this. It's fine. Everyone has a reason to like and dislike the sequel trilogy. If my unwarranted opinion can be useful, I dislike it mostly because it's actually bad with their foreshadowing, and character butchering. But my main problem is that 1. the First Order realistically makes no sense to exist. And 2. They just copied A New Hope with the first movie, which is why The Force Awakens is somehow the best movie in the trilogy. Also, Chewie.
@megaboy76723 күн бұрын
Like, the First Order, a new organization, somehow managed to go unnoticed and build an entire planet-sized Star System-buster weapon, when they should have no funds for this. THE EMPIRE, the RULING SYSTEM of the galaxy, was barely able to build a Single-planet-busting weapon.

Definitely agree with you there, though I'm one of those people who prefer The Force Awakens over The Last Jedi. The tone becomes noticeably more goofy. If you guys want to see that stuff you were talking about, lots of Sith, Jedi as a full blown army, a jedi that uses the light and dark. The Old Republic era is a treat. Knights of the Old Republic II, has arguably the most interesting character in Star Wars. This lady rose to the highest peak of the Jedi and fell, then rose to highest peak of the Sith and fell. Her perspective on the force is one of the coldest takes and best takes on the force I have ever seen. To get her full story naturally in the game, you would have to play it, iirc, SIXTEEN times doing specific choices at specific times to get her whole story. The depth of her character was crazy and I loved it. I highly recommend “the philosophy of Kreia” video on KZbin for anyone who is interested in the true nature of the force. The boy twin eventually fell to the darkside, but we had so many years of storyline building up to it. When Disney bought the series, they ditched decades of lore to make this new, watered-down version of their own agenda driven storyline and with the exception of Clone Wars, Rebels, Rogue One, and the Mandolorian, their new timeline is very dull and disjointed due to creative differences and lack of understanding of the source material. This is the first Star Wars film I saw in the Cinema. It was awesome. It makes sense to think the Clone Troopers and Storm Troopers are the same thing as they're fairly similar, but the clones get phased out after the clone wars and before the fourth film, most of them die during the Empires rule and the clone facilities on Kamino were destroyed. Storm Trooper is a career path for the Empire during its day. I found the Han solo death fine for him, but I also grew up with the knowledge that Harrison Ford wanted to kill Han Solo for years, and the books where Han moved more to the background and the kids take more of the stage. The Rule of Two comes from one Darklord who put it in place after a Sith civil war, and it's broken all the time outside of the movie. Chewie

What would've been a GREAT ending is 1. Rey and Kylo have their fight FIRST 2. Rey does surprisingly well just simply because she's calm while Kylo is tweaking and making dumb mistakes; Kylo then gains the upper hand by cheating. Han intervenes before he can finish her off. 3. Just when you think Han is about to sacrifice himself so she can escape, Han flips the script and KNOCKS KYLO TF OUT with a stun blast point-blank mid-monologue like "Oh you think you can bamboozle ME? I TAUGHT YOU THAT SHIT. You're coming with me. _I'm not asking."_ 4. Han kidnaps his son back and locks him in a specially-designed Sith containment cell with his favorite bedding, plenty of light, and a window to try talking to him. 5. Whole next movie is Snoke using Kylo as a beacon to figure out where their secret base is, Kylo keeps trying to escape, and Han Leia and Luke each having their own opinions on how to draw out this Snoke guy and redeem their boy.

Kylo Ren's lightsabre isn't as stable as most others because the crystal inside is damaged, which is why it has that ripple effect, the cross guard on the hilt disperses the excess energy. 2. To correct one bit of lore. The GAR(the Republic army from the prequels), were the only faction that strictly used Clones Troopers. The Empire phased them out in favour of enlisted/conscripted civilians, and the First Order's Stormtroopers are, essentially Spartan II's from Halo, but without the super soldier stuff. 3. Captain Phasma's armour is made from the same material as the Naboo starships from the prequels. 4. There is a comic in canon that explains why C-3PO has a red arm in TFA.

I wanted to think the duel between Rey and Kylo Ren was simply the start of a gritty version of future lightsaber fights, where you eventually reach the grand set-pieces and high-octane choreography of the prequels by starting off with a very grounded and simple Original Trilogy-style duel where the emotional stakes and visual storytelling are the main focus (it's only an even fight because Ben was badly wounded by Chewbacca's BFG bowcaster and Rey is only just learning how to use the Force). While I didn't hate the later fights in conceptually (in fact I think they'd be executed quite well as they are in, well, better films), I grew to be disappointed we never really followed that direction (because there wasn't any).

23:25 ** Sarcasm ** Oh man, the Stormtroopers, who are based in part on the irl Stormtroopers (WW2), are doing the Stormtrooper thing? Who woulda guessed? Ok, but for real though, pretty WILD for a Disney movie! Also, fun fan theory: A part of the reason why Finn broke out of his Stormtrooper brainwashing was because he actually hits his shots unlike other Stormtroopers who couldn't hit the broadside of a Space-Barn. And others in these comments have said this already, but Stormtroopers are not clones. They were eventually "phased out" (the best way I can describe it) from the Empire, probably b/c they were TOO capable and the Emperor didn't want to chance someone else making use of the secret Orders (like Order 66) to have the clones betray him exactly like he did to the Jedi. 34:55 So, uh, thing about this scene is, (from I've been told) Harrison Ford REALLY did not want to come back to reprise his role for Han Solo. He said that the role was too "immature" for him or something to that effect. However, when he did eventually agree to take up the role again he specifically requested that his character be killed in Episode 7 so that Han Solo couldn't appear in any of the future films to come. So, yeah, blame the actor partially for this one (if this is true and I remembered this all correctly enough). If I'm not mistaken as well, Poe was originally supposed to die and NOT come back, but I forgot what it was exactly that made them change it and bring him back. 40:30 Yes, Exactly. That is precisely why the Vikings and the Nords named them that, to make one island seem more appealing than the other when it is actually the other way around so that people would think about invading the wrong island instead of the one they liked more.

They may be able to move stuff with the force, or use it like anakin did as a kid without even realizing he was force sensitive, but that's about it... and she never even used an ounce of her potential throughout all these years, until in one single day when she learned of the existence of the force, then started using all these abilities on whim...Not even Luke could use the force at all before training. it makes no sense, it's cheap writing and makes the purpose of training and having a Master absolutely pointless... beyond all that, this is like a rehash of the original trilogy... it's literally all the same, just with different characters. By the end it negates everything Anakin and Luke did and sacrificed in 1-6... The people who love these, they've never seen a single Star Wars movie and started off with the sequels so they don't know the story, the old characters, or how the universe works... or they just don't understand Star Wars or it's characters even after starting with 1-6, and they're just into the battles, cinematography, and the more advanced CGI... Rest of the sequel aside, what they did to Luke's character should piss every single Star Wars fan off. With that said, if you've never seen a single star wars movie prior to 7, or if you're solely into the fights and visual effects while not caring about the actual story or it's character development, then they'd be pretty good from that perspective. And the ones who wrote these movies and Kathleen who's got creative control, they don't understand Star wars or it's fans. Kathleen's goal was two things... 1. Push an agenda. 2. Ruin the Skywalker Saga and start over because of her fued with George Lucas and Mark Hamill. Just go watch videos of Mark Hamill hating on the sequels, he feels the same way as we all do and for good reason... he was shitting on them in live QnA's sitting next to the ones in charge, before they even finished filming the sequels, he was pissed and didn't give a fuuckkk what they thought about it. And George wrote multiple scripts for the sequels, they could of just used those... and they had a never ending supply of Legends Lore, they could of just used that and adapted it to the big screen. We would love that, there's so much in legends I wish we'd get to see. From expanding the Sky Walker Saga, a Vader film(s) or series using the Vader comics, movies on ancient Sith, a trilogy of Reven's life... which starts as Jedi, then a Sith, back to a Jedi. He was so powerful, he brought himself back to life... or even a well done Ahsoka movie/series. There's so much in legends, if they used that and didn't force their agenda, it'd be great.. they'd make a lot of money while making it very easy for their writers...cause everything we want is already there, just adapt the stories and lore into a script. Anyway... go watch the clone wars animated series (you get a lot of Maul too), Rogue One, Andor, season 1-2 of The Mandolorian, and the Kenobi series has some good episodes. Rebels after you're finished with Clone Wars is also really good... and it's needed if you watch the Ahsoka series, which I didn't like. It didn't feel like Ahsoka at all, and she's one of my favorite characters in the franchise. She's in the Clone Wars series.b

This trilogy is strange, but hope you enjoy it. I heard each movie was suppose to be a collab with 3 different writer/directors. After this one, Rian Johnson takes over the next one, but then they bring back JJ Abrams to wrap it up because of how the events of the next one was recieved. As far as Rey, I agree that they focused on her connection to the force more than character personality. When it explains how her connection is so strong, you may or may not be okay with it, looking forward to seeing your takes on it. I think they originally didn't want to give a reason, but people started talking about her being a Mary Sue. Since the prequels revealed Mitochlorians and how it determines their strength, they decided to give an explanation.

‘7 “fixes what was wrong with the prequels.” ‘8 “fixes what was wrong with ‘7.” ‘9 “fixes what was wrong with ‘8.” As a video-essayist once said, this is the Star Wars Anti-Trilogy, and not just because they weren’t written at the same time by one person.

Harrison Ford actually insisted that Han be killed off. It was a condition for him returning.

The sequels are not remembered fondly. This first movie one was nostalgia bate and the second and third destroy everything that came before.

Rey grew up in a world where Leia, Han, and Luke were all legendary figures, bigger than life. So for her, seeing Han die is like seeing one of her heroes die. Her daydreams are of being like them, she wants to be a hero, or at the very least see the heroes win. She wants the world to be about more than survival. Finn on the other hand has grown up in the middle of the conflict, he just wants out, along the way he started finding things to care about more than survival. His misfortune is that all of the people he comes to care about all care deeply about the conflict he wants nothing to do with.

It's only going downhill from that point. This movie, in my opinion, is the best of the Sequel Trilogy.

As someone commented earlier, the Sith a thousand years before this time were very self-destructive and sceming. They did conquer most of the galaxy several times, but would usually kill each other off or weaker Sith would gang up on the stronger ones, hence weaker Sith would move on.

This entire sequel trilogy felt so unnecessary despite of the potential it had…but I gotta say, I absolutely loved the chemistry between Finn and Poe. My favorite characters from this trilogy

heh, funny how the best thing that came out of the "the force is female"-trilogy is a bromance.

I don’t know if anyone mentioned it but Starkiller had been under construction since the early days of the empire. It was constructed in the planet Ilum, where the Jedi would get their kyber crystals for pretty much all their lightsabers
@Tyarrk23 күн бұрын
i imagine that is an EU idea? Anyway the concept is stupid imo. Unless they found a way to have a planet travel like a space ship and/or make laser beams travel through hyperspace, that thing should be literally useless.

@@Tyarrk nope, the extended universe was decanonized before the sequels came out. It’s actually shown in Jedi: Fallen Order
