What makes “leaves from a vine” even better, or sadder, depending on your perspective, is that it’s one of the last, if not the very last, recordings Mako ever did. The man had a LONG acting career, I first remember him in Conan the Barbarian (the good one with Arnold Swartzenneggar). You can hear the genuine cracking, crying in his voice when he sings it, making the recording SO MUCH better

So, sorry to make this episode sadder than it already is, but the "Mako" in the "In memory of Mako" at the end of Iroh's story is Iwamatsu Makoto, Iroh's origional VA, who was often known as Mako. Ah, yes. The Tears of Ba Sing Se. The Tale of Iroh is the best part of this episode and is why the fans regularly rank this episode so highly. It's just that good. The thing about the Tale of Zuko is that Zuko doesn't know what he wants. He's still lost this season. What's more, even if he did settle down with that girl, she would be with Lee, not Zuko. I imagine that is a major problem for him. "Never forget who you are." And yet to be with her, he'd deny who he is and worse yet lie to her about who he is. And that's ignoring the question of children. What happens if they have a fire bender child? Something established in the Extended Universe, is that the Fire Nation tests every child for Fire Bending soon after birth. Even in the Fire Nation they have to take special precautions with them. Can't have them burning down their home or hurting themselves.

I've watched Avatar more times than I can remember, and I still tear up every single time I hear Iroh sing Leaves From the Vine.

As someone who's watched it since it's original airing, we all cried when this episode came on, and cried even more as we watched it again, getting older. Thank you for this series, seeing you reacting to it for the first time is nice to see, like watching it for the first time myself. We all cried, it's okay 😊😭❤️

I was way too young and stupid to understand the context behind the tale of Iroh when it first aired. It makes me so mad I couldn’t appreciate it until YEARS later.

This is the saddest episode especially knowing that mako learned of his cancer shortly before the recording of the song he will be in all of r memories RIP 😔

2:52 You can be good or bad, it has nothing to do with how powerful you are. Femininity is an important source of power for women the same way masculinity is a power source for men. Your motivations don't necessarily affect how powerful you are! Toxic masculinity is a western concept. I hope you mean some crazed ideology and not individual men. A real man would never want a woman to lose their femininity! We're attracted to your femininity which in turn gives you power over us!

Iroh’s song kills me every time. Mako was amazing. Iroh’s also such a loving character it’s impossible not to want to give him a hug.

The most impactful about the Iroh episode its that he helped men in all stages of life. From infant to adulthood like he helped his son but he couldn't at the end.

That Iroh episode is like watching someone load a revolver one bullet at a time, not knowing that they were going to shoot you once they were done.

The portrait of Lu Ten (Iroh’s son) is based on Mako’s own military service portrait.

To add to what everyone else says about Tale of Iroh, the letter from his son translates roughly to something like "I shall see you again when we have achieved victory"

Man, imagine thinking all your life Earth Kingdom are the enemy, and time after time, barriers keep breaking for him. First, the lady who was burned and whom he empathized with. Then, the family that helped him, and he helped back. And now, romantically, kissing a girl from the "enemy" faction. I love it.

One of my favorite moments, if not my #1 moment in the series is Zuko's speech in Day of the Black Sun. To avoid spoilering Alicia, I'll just say if you know, you know.

Hey, you know whats even worse😀? Mako was the VA of Iroh, who was (and did) dieing of cancer. Hence why he was crying.

There's a theory that Iroh knew zukos middle part was goofy, He did that so they can have a laugh and she can touch his hair and cut some of the ice. He knew zuko was awkward and it would help, as much Rizz as iroh has I believe it

And we open to Toph having enough hair for two or 3 anime protagonists. How she packs that down to a little bun is beyond me. Katara wants what's best for her friends, but she doesn't always know with Toph. Still, Toph is getting more out of this than she expected. If you're happy and not hurting anyone, you do you. Yeah, validation is hard thing to do without. Oh no, the real waterworks come later. Oh, you want laughs for Iroh's story? Buckle up, Alicia. Brave uncle keeping a happy face while singing a painful song. Giving advice for the little ones. Little ones who may well be pro players of Tectonic soccer if the War ends in Fire Nation defeat. SCATTER! Speaking of people wanting for direction and advice. Save your ducts, their real test is imminent. Sadly.... Yes. And that's not all. Iroh's original VA passed around the same time as the episode. Rabaroo is just hungry and only inconveniencing 1 person. This may well be the first time Aang has simultaneously bended multiple elements outside of the Avatar State. Improv Haiku is not easy, so points to Sokka for getting that far. Creativity and intelligence. Well Zuko already had 1 person catch on to the fact that he and Iroh are fire nation. Zuko still has to work on that temper. I guess she feels since it's only the first date, she's not a girlfriend yet. So this is an incredibly reckless move, but can we appreciate his precision and speed? There are some people who think she did put it together and was still willing to give him a chance. Zuko had a crush on a girl back home and given how he was hurt and betrayed by his own family, it's understandable that he'd have trouble opening up and connecting. Him being the exiled prince of the nation that has repeatedly attacked this city in the the last 100 years is only the start of reasons why he'd run off. 26:13 "Are we the baddies?" Street meat of dubious origin. This is why you need regulations down to the guy with a hot dog cart.

19:55 bold of you to assume Iroh didn't combed Zuko's hair like that expecifically because he planned for her to do that
