You said the bending/nonbending thing must not be an economic issue after seeing Mako working at the power plant, but what Mako was doing there is a job that can only be done at all by a firebender. And if you think back to ATLA, remember places like Omashu and the Northern Water Tribe, with intricate transportation systems that also run entirely on bending. These are labor jobs, often looked down on as the bottom rung of the workforce, and even here there are opportunities for employment that are just plain impossible for non-benders to do. The most popular sport in the city, one that draws enough money to have an entire waterfront stadium dedicated to it, is one that can explicitly only be played by benders - it's even the name of the sport.

And thats the reason why I think Amon was, even if his ways were wrong, right about benders and non benders not being equal and trying to give non benders more power and rights(is that even called so?)

Yeah, the problem wasn't "who got stuck on laborious jobs", but that most of entry level jobs are locked behind bending skills. Like, you can't get high position in police without metal bending skills, non-benders can't outperform earth benders in construction or heavy lifting, energy supply is ruled by fire benders (I don't think non-bender can even be in charge of a bunch of lightning benders), water supply and medicine most likely is controlled by water benders, etc. We have technology and science to do all those things for us and that is something anyone can learn how to do, but it's not the same with bending. Overall it leaves non-benders less opportunities to work and even then they often are harassed by bender gangs and stuff. So yeah, Amon brings up very real, social economical problem of that society to gain more followers

Sometimes, art mimics reality. In the earliest parts of the Bolshevik Revolution, it was staffed by a bunch of former rich kids from old wealth who were no longer wealthy, taking revenge out on the newer rich who earned their wealth through business. In comparison, parts of the Equalist movement were bankrolled by corporate types not out of altruism, but to make moves against their rivals. Socialism has a way of attracting the bitter and envious. A game of shadows, politics is.

Originally Legend of Korra would be an autoconclusive series, just one season. It was planned this way, that's why the events here happens so fast. But the fans wanted more and more seasons were made on the fly. This explains the different villains in all 4 seasons. Because of that, the fanbase splits between the ones who loves Korra, the ones who hate the series and the rest in the middle. Another problem were Nickelodeon itself, cutting the budget every season, specially the last one, and putting others obstacles in the way. And finally, the absense of Aaron Ehasz impacted in the whole serie. He was the Head Writer of The Last Airbender and he didn't work in the Legend of Korra, working 3 different people as Head writers across the seasons instead. I would expand this but is very difficult for me to write in english, because I'm no fluent in it. Oh, and I love your reactions Alicia❤😊 Have a nice day everyone.

I wish we saw other benders working generators too. Fire benders heating water, water benders making steam and moving it, earthbenders directly rotating the generator, and I could see all of them being needed or desired. As for lightning proliferation, as the world became a smaller place with more powered ships, the spread of industrial printing, and the invention of radio, I can see how knowledge has spread a lot farther. And I can also see some fire nation people arguing that to level the playing field with the growing numbers of metal benders, they could no longer hoard the lightning, even if only for military or SWAT equivalent on the home islands... but of course knowledge is a lot harder to contain than industrial tools and supplies. Finally, Zolt kept the lightning going for a lot longer than anyone else we've seen, so with more lightning benders, there may be new variations on it instead the one technique.

Honestly, what makes Amon such an effective speaker is the fact that he mixes both passion and facts into his speech. He isn't wrong, you're right. Benders *have* been behind all the major conflicts in Avatars world. Is it fair to lump all benders in with those ones? No, obviously not, but that's not how people being terrorized by benders abusing their gifts are gonna see it. Using a group of known criminals for his grand revelation was a brilliant move. A fun idea about how the ability to bend lightning has become way more common: In A:TLA only 3 people could bend lightning, but back then bending was a much more spiritual and cultural thing. Benders were seen as a representation of the nations they're from. But with the blending of the four nations with United Republic, that idea has become outdated. As Iroh put it; "Lightning is a pure expression of Firebending without aggression. It is not fueled by rage or emotion the way other Firebending is." As society has progressed and the nations have started to mix together, people have become more spiritually and culturally detached to their elemental origins. To many, bending is just something you can do, and less a part of who you are. So more people can separate their emotions from firebending and generate lightning. Not to mention it's a great way to explain how electricity gets introduced to the world ;D It's also one reason why the Equalist movement has gained so much traction; while previously benders were seen as a part of your nation and culture, now they're just people. People born with a disproportionate amount of power to other people, which has... let's call it an "interesting" parallel lol. As we saw in the first episode, benders of all kinds are forming gangs to oppress people. Instead of fighting a war against one element and nation, the danger has become generalized. Earlier A:TLA's distrust and fear of the Fire Nation has shifted to a distrust and fear of benders as a whole. Welcome to The Legend of Korra, where nothing is simple and everything you think you know about the world will be challenged. It's my favourite kind of thing to see happen with a franchise. I love this show so much.

And it ensures Korra has to struggle even though she's far more of a natural fighter than Aang ever was. She can't assume her enemies will announce themselves with a uniform, let alone a military formation. Heck, some may never launch a physical attack. And systemic flaws in an era of continued rapid change aren't so easily punched out as an empowered monarch or a naval invasion.
@bluecoin3771

@@bthsr7113 Not to mention that for someone who loves bending as much as she does, the permanent elimination of one's bending abilities is truly frightening for her. This made Amon a very effective villain and threat season 1. He didn't need to take over the world in a day, he just needed to be a threat to the one thing our heroine loved most of all. This is also a good writing principle: your story should work whether or not there are fantastical elements. Amon would be threatening whether his method for crippling people for life was a magical energybending technique or, say, a virus that left one bedridden for life.

Economically, benders do a lot of labor, but that they can do it more easily actually makes them HARDER TO COMPETE AGAINST IN THE LABOR MARKET in skilled blue collar jobs, which is one of the big issues between benders and nonbenders. Add in that the council system takes representatives from the different cultural communities who immigrated from the four nations, and bending that cultures element makes you viewed, however unfairly, as a “better representative” of it in the eyes of some, and yeah, they have an easier time with positions of power too

Amon is kinda right about the Avatar causing imbalance too. Especially when going into Avatar history, the majority of the time another Avatars successor spends most of their efforts on fixing the problems the previous Avatar created. Some Avatars focus too much on the physical or spiritual and neglect the other, others focus on their own nations and neglect the conflicts brewing within others. The Avatar also caused the development of a "One Saviour" complex in the world, leading to more reliance on the Avatar to fix problems and create balance instead of a society that is inherently stable and does this for themselves. Lastly, it is undeniable that Benders are simply superior to non-Benders. If you cant mental bend you cant be part of certain jobs like the city police force. If you cant fire bend or bend electricity you will have to settle for much worse factory jobs instead of being a source of electricity yourself. And many many more exaples. And yes, Benders can use these powers for good, but all non-Benders can do is hope that they get on the Benders good side and all too often that isnt the case and non-Benders are basically screwed and powerless. In the world of Avatar true equality is kinda impossible.

Sure, but the flipside to that is everyone only sees you for the fact you can bend. They don't care about your work ethic, your drive or passion. They just see what is essentially a mutation that they can exploit. Which is incredibly dehumanising. Also, as technology grows and industry rises, we've literally been shown how non-benders can combat benders. Tai Lee paved the way and now, we have people who know pressure point martial arts and have essentially stun-batons.

@@TheJamieellis Non-Bender can always hide their bending or choose to ignore it and the worlds governments arent looking down on Benders like that. And sure, modern technology and techniques get developed to counter a Benders powerful abilities, but they are far from being able to contain their destructive potential, especially against very powerful benders that could simply tear down a skyscraper if they wanted to. Also, not ever bender can learn Ty Lee techniques and flip trough the air or properly use anti-Bender gear to great effect. Even long term, so long as the methods arent very intrusive against Benders, which would suck for Benders, inequality or its impication and potential always exist. Its a issue that has to come up eventually and will always lead to conflict potential. I dont like the portrail and radical, unjustifiable actions of Amon, but even if it is initially painful for Benders that built up their entire life on their Bending and superiority, the only thing Benders fear here to much is becoming a common person. Which, think about it. If the world wasnt this unequal and both sides didnt mind each other, then why would Benders fear becoming regular people so much? Because they know something that makes them naturally better is taken away from them. Its sad that a useful asset is taken from the world, but long term that would lead to a more stable world too.

@@catmixo No I'm not. Mako is an orphan raised on a street, who cares deeply for his brother. So much so, he managed to give Bolin what he didn't had - a happy childhood that grew in his constant optimism and child-like wonder. Korra on the other hand is a spoiled arrogant brat, who got all she wanted all her life, who learned three out of four elements when she was basically a toddler, who only wants to go watch marches and explore the world, who runs from cops after causing mass destruction, who ignores Tenzin's wisdom

Perhaps it's been part of him since before his parents were killed. He understands that it's a tool that firebenders can use, for evil or for good. The history of the 100 years war started by Ozai is a good historical standpoint too. Firebending was used to rule the world, and now it's used to power the city too.

On Amon's "point" that benders are responsible for every war, whether or not it's actually accurate (which I don't believe it is), I believe that even though benders have been famously attributed for being the ones in charge of these war efforts, I think it's diverting the actual issue by blaming benders for it. The fact that they were benders wasn't the driving force behind why all of them were waging war. Take fire lord Sozin for example. He was a firebender, yes. But it wasn't because he was a bender that he started the war. He was a leader of his nation who happened to be a bender (not all fire lords were benders). And, the fact that he was a bender wasn't a factor in why he wanted to start the 100 year war. Sozin started the war to "share in his nation's prosperity", but was a lie due to his nation's dwindling resources being on the horizon. Now take Palpatine (Darth Sidious) from Star Wars. His whole motivation was driven by his frustration with the jedi for having all that power of the force...but doing "nothing" with it. And he rationalized that even a single sufficiently powerful force user (such as himself) could rule the whole galaxy (which he did).

He is completely wrong about bending being the cause of every war. It’s just been the instrument in which both sides fight that war. Some soldiers have swords and spears, some have bending. Trust me, if there wasn’t bending, they’d still go to war and find a way to kill each other. We do just fine in war without bending.

Its 100% an economic problem. All industries benefit more from benders than non-benders and some are exclusive to the former like pro-bending and Mako's job, and the simple factor that benders are an minority in society make them earn more just for not being so common. This leads to non benders getting worse jobs and there is also the mafias that use bending as an weapon to coerce the non benders. Even if bending is now an job, the mafia is probably the guys that mostly train to fight, so even civil benders will be overpowered by them. In the end we have guys that cant choose jobs and are asked protection money from the same people that "stole" their jobs. Spoilers: Its really sad that as someone pointed out, the show completely abadons this idea after Amon is defeated. No conflict or mention as far as i can remember, the whole anti-bending army diseappears. Using an example and unfortunately following Godwin's law, its like you killed Hitler and the world no longer has prejudice agaisnt jews

RWBY lifts a ton from Avatar. To the point where it feels less like they were inspired by Avatar, and more like they were just trying to make their own Avatar with cat girls and anime waifus. If you wanna see someone lay all of it out, I'd recommend checking out RWBY is Disappointing, by Hbomberguy here on KZbin. It's long but also thoroughly entertaining. Plus, it doesn't just shit on RWBY the whole time. If anything, he's extremely nice to the show despite all the issues he uncovers with it and its writing team.

I think Mako's factory job shows how Benders can too be exploited by the system so long as they're poor, etc. Heck, even Pro-Bending for that matter, considering how Mako and Bolin struggle financially, they're clearly not paid enough for any of the extremely physically demanding jobs they do with their Bending. Seems like industries are just looking to pick up desperate Benders off the streets, who don't have no choice but to break theie bodies in exchange for a little money, at least.

It suffers from the issue a ton of writers seem to have, which is "Oh, the love interests have hooked up. Now what?" For some reason people can't just write a main character in a relationship without wanting to introduce drama, thinking thats what people want. You get side characters like Sokka and Suki who can have a decent relationship because it isn't shown onscreen aside from cute gags every now and then. But Aang and Katara don't get together until the end of the series because any romance between them that goes past "will they, won't they" would be front and center for everyone to see.

I mean the way you talked about venders taking jobs didn’t make sense to me. If they’re taking jobs they’re taking all the well paying and important ones, not taking blue collar work from the poor. They’re taking positions of power, the police, major manufacturers…. I think there’d be a bigger chance of an industrial worker rising up issue if they gave all the blue collar work to benders.
