This reminds me of a saying that shows up in military joke circles: Vietnamese are gangsta until the water starts speaking _Korean_ . During the Vietnam War, the Korean Blue Dragon Division basically scared the _hell_ out of the VC and NVA, to the point that they would rather _avoid_ Korean positions and units than fight them.

10:45 In the DLC, a data analysis considers the Captain of the Alicorn and the Player Character as "singularities". Whenever one of them is in a combat operation, any predictions based on common sense of strategy and tactics will be invalid. When the two "singularities" are battling each other, the AI that helps with the analysis says that it will take more than 3 months of calculation to even get an idea of what will happen.

"Heed my words! This boat has the means to end this hideous war, in a definitive and elegant manner." Captain Matias Torres The Alicorn is the primary antagonist for a set of DLC for Ace Combat. Ten Million Relief Plan, the mission where those 3 songs play in, is one of the craziest missions in the entire series, it depicts war as pure madness and chaos even in just a small skirmish, bodies falling from the sky in burning aircraft everywhere, and a Submarine carrying nuclear weapons comandeered by a madman who just wants to kill a million people for pure evil. The 3 songs play in 3 sections of the mission, "Awakening" is the hunt for the Submarine, "Alicorn" depicts the fight against the Alicorn, "The Hero of Comberth Harbor" basically depicts the wrath of a god over those evil men, the god being the protagonist. Even the dialogue is crazy: "-What happened?! LOAD THE NEXT SHELL!" "-FCS Error! Can't raise the elevation of the barrel! -Three Strikes in the sky is a sign of an ill omen. -Captain? -ALL SLOW AHEAD! -Your prediction is not wrong when you said during Alicorn that "the enemy is fighting back". There's a good reason why AC community have a quote "when the sea start speaking latin". If you heard that song, you know shit is about to go down -The "Hero of Comberth Harbor" is the title given to Matias Torres, a fleet commander of the invincible Aegir fleet, which you sunk before in previous AC game. He didn't managed to defend the harbor, but he got that title for his heroic action. Now you face him again, only with even more crazed, unstable mental state and wielding even deadlier ship -The 3 songs' lyrics are basically the same, only presented differently to fit different narrative tone. However, all of them basically tells the player about the motivation and the hatred of Matias Torres and his crew about the world and their twisted view of salvation of humanity from the shackles of perpetual war Salūtem omnibus Salvation for all- Daemon requiēscēs You will arrest it, demon. Salūtem omnibus Salvation for all- Daemon tū dēfugis You refuse it, demon. Expergīscimini Rouse yourselves! Salūtem omnibus Salvation for all! Pista ungula Wounded hoof, Adnihilā (x2) Destroy everything! Salūtem omnibus Salvation for all- Quibus artāveris For those you’ll have held close. Salūtem omnibus Salvation for all- О̄lim remitterem (x2) Only then might I relent. О̄mina adveniet The omen will come to pass, Rēs ā nōmine Namely these things: Arma īnfernī Weapons from hell! Coming back to it, I think the key idea in these three tracks is escalation. There are two phrases that get repeated throughout the three: "Salutem pavidos, mea requies est." (Salvation of the fearful, this is my solution.) "Salutem pavidos, mea iudicum est." (Salvation of the fearful, this is my judgement.) In each track, they're said differently. In Awakening, it's quiet, almost a whispered threat. In Alicorn, it's more of a declaration. "This is my judgement." Finally, in Hero of Comberth Harbor, it all goes off the rails. It's a threatening declaration made by a crazy person. All three of these perfectly encapsulate Matias Torres' (the guy you're fighting) mental state during the fight; a threat, to a declaration, to a deranged war cry.

Most of the other Ace Combat antagonists have intentions that are at least understandable. Like Navarro at least wanted to make money and Cohen was motivated by revenge. Their actions aren’t justified by any means, and you could call easily call Navarro greedy, but their motives are understandable to a degree. Torres, however, simply wanted to kill millions of innocent people because he wanted to and because he had the means to do it. TLDR: Most of the AC antagonists are humans who do monstrous things. Torres is a monster.

AC7 was much when it came to like the emotional stuff. 4 and 5 take the cake there imo. 6 had it's moments early. The main civilian you follow losing her daughter then finding her husband's shot down fighter crashed next to the road gets me. Being Left Behind is the track for that scene. It's only a minute and a half but it cuts deeeeeep with the context of what you're watching. Will never not recommend Jose Pavli and the Project Wingman OST. His live orchestra video for the anniversary was insane. Even as a jaded AC fan who grew up with the Agnus Dei, Unsung War, and Zero, Kings from PR can't be touched. OH YOU DID THE WHOLE THING! Oh hot damn! Get the popcorn and drinks! I really love this whole trio because of the buildup. Awakening is when you are hunting down the Alicorn you're fighting off waves of drones to protect your sonar planes. You're diving through the clouds over the open ocean hoping and praying you'll make it in time to save them. Even as they joke that they only really need two planes to finish the mission. Alicorn is the main boss battle, there are tracers, railgun shots, enemy fighters, drones, and SO MANY MISSILES All flying through the air all at once. You have to hit as hard as you can before the Alicorn dives beneath the waves once more. Hands down it is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SONG the way the music SWELLS as the Alicorn RISES from the deep. With the back and forth between the two sides. Then you have Hero of Comberth Harbor, the final stand. And it just HITS the roof and blows it away. So glad you took the time to do a reaction for these tracks. I've been waiting on the edge of my seat for a long time and I'm loving every moment of your reactions and commentary! ^^

And right before Hush you have the original final fight against the Arsenal Bird with Daredevil. So the fight against the drones is sandwiched between two climaxes. It's little storytelling touches like these that make me wonder if how much of the story we got was actually planned out. Some parts feel like they were slotted in at the last minute without consideration for the overall narrative flow.

@@nikolasrhine3252 good point, that’s true. Despite the mission or rather the part of the mission during which the song plays isn’t as impactful compared to what happened before and what happens after, “Hush” still is up there with the best of the OST for me

Honestly such spooky music, the unsettling lack of drums and big sounds makes the mission harder, like playing music without a metronome, even though there is a specific mission objective that requires good timing basically every couple of minutes as you have to destroy warheads before they are loaded into the railgun chamber as literally hundreds of varied targets try to kill you deader than dead. That last mission is send-you-to-therapy hard without the Nosferatu 😱

Essentially, Awakening is you searching out the enemy as he evades you, Alicorn is him choosing to fight you now that you've forced his hand, and Hero of Comberth Harbor is him showing you his full tenacity that has been overtaken by suicidal madness.

You only have to listen to "Singularity" on your own to close this sea of emotions and events that occur in this mission. When you start playing Ace Combat, having listened to several tracks of the ost, you will enjoy it much more, since the rhythms of the ost are usually synchronized with the maneuvers and actions that you execute with the plane in real time. Sometimes when you play it for the first time and you don't listen to the ost, those little moments of synchrony are lost because you tend to focus more on the battle and everything that happens around, that's why I usually lower the volume a little to all the effects of the game and turn the music up to maximum volume.

I think it’s actually super interesting how that without context it seems more heroic… but with context…maniacal. It goes from the theme of a hero with poor understanding… to the theme of an absolute madman. The unwavering resolve of his crew. From the typical tale of a confident hero… to a seemingly unstoppable power of a maniac. From heroism to insanity and desperation… and all it takes is context

I'm no Latin expert but I heard discussion online that the lyrics for the chorus say something akin to "Salutem Hominos" and "Daemon Requies est" (probably butchered the spelling) translating roughly to "Salvation of Humanity" and "The Demon is at Rest" Captain Torres, at one point at least, truly believed he was doing the right thing to save humanity, but once he's too fargone, all that's left in that submarine is a Demon at rest, waiting to surface and take action.

Another great AC reaction always enjoy seeing these. Thanks for keeping up this series, and I am really looking forward to the next one. During Alicorn you mentioned how the track starts out confident and then it is almost like the opposing side answers back. There is a cycle of establishing confidence, questioning that confidence, and then finally reaffirming that confidence in a lot of AC tracks that I really enjoy. Magic Spear 1+2 really demonstrate this well I feel. Magic Spear 1 seems like it was made to just make the player feel like the coolest guy in the sky. Then toward the end of 1 and after the transition into 2 the music starts to add tenser elements, asking the player "Are you sure you're really that good?". Then by the end of 2 the song has looped back around to that confidence displayed at the beginning of 1 and you feel like you can answer back "Yeah I am that good!"

It's wonderful hearing that description of Alicorn. In the game mission intro, your character and an enemy are likened to each other. To pivotal figures that cast enormous influence of those around them... singularities. And even the assistant evaluating these two figures cannot give a confident answer about the outcome without more data and more time.. I had not thought of that showing in the music like that. Thank you.

Nice view on the music. Especially with these three being in the same mission. Awakening also sets the mood for the mission. It is your ONE AND ONLY chance to put a stop to the antagonists plan. Especially since it is considered a secret mission, there are not a lot of reinforcements, only the mission essentials (common to make a fight bigger for the player in game wise) Some people even know they won't return from this. Alicorn is a nice catch of you. The switch in sides. This part in the mission is indeed a hide and seek between your plane and a submarine. It is evading you by all means, and you are under immense pressure to find this damn sub. As you have AC7, I won't say how, experience it yourself. Hero of Comberth Harbor. It is dropped in briefing who Captain Matias Torres is and why his men are sticking with him till the end. They don't fear him, they adore him, trust him. And that crew is in the sub that just decided that all guns they have are to be aimed at you. Railguns, guns, missiles, drones, planes. It forces you to go faster and faster, taking little time to aim your shots. As having spammed this mission. It felt like the instruments are all weapons aimed at me, and the voices were my weapons, almost overwhelmed and surpressed. However it comes together in the final, as you said, ends like Duel of Fates. Again with a reason, but I only try to explain feeling. Though there are people who spoil the whole, it is a different experience if you do it yourself. Once again a very fine react to the songs, I thank you sir.

For a lot of people "Awakening" makes them fell a badass sensation, but for me is nothing but desesperance. more than a million lives are in the sight of a nuclear weapon that is heading to being launched, you are in a race against the clock to find and destroy one of the most powerful Erusean weapons equiped with a high tech arsenal (Drones, Railguns, Insane Amount Of Missiles And EM Barriers) leaded by a mentally instable captain who brainwashed all the crew to follow him with his crazy plan and the only chance to find that sea monster are 4 patrol planes willing to give their lives to help you even when they know that you might wont be able to protectem all. for me a really tense situation and thats why i love this song and why love so much Ace Combat

The Alicorn Trilogy is a story in three acts; one about hunting a great and terrible beast. Act 1 (Awakening): The Hunt Act 2 (Alicorn): The Chase Act 3 (Hero of Comberth Harbor): The Ticking Clock The lyrics are all about the DLC's villain and his mental state. A mental state so fractured and deteriorated that the sonar pings of his submarine are even part of the choir. He has become his submarine, and his submarine has become him. It's also interesting that, like Archange, Hero of Comberth Harbor also doesn't end on a fade into the next loop. It crescendos and finishes, as neither are situations meant to continue. It is fated to end here and now. Anyway, glad to hear you picked up Ace Combat 7 and look to play it in the future! Just a heads up, when presented with a question about controls, the community is huge (very very huge) into 'Expert' controls where it's more precise and visceral. The other controls are more akin to Star Fox.

Hero of Comberth Harbor (which was called Ten Million Relief Plan before we knew the official title) is a good track, but it's worth noting that in game since you can hear your opponents talking over the radio, you can actually hear alarms related to how damaged the ship you're fighting is behind the arc villain talking. "All slow ahead, flood the aft trim tanks!" "Sir, that will sink the boat aft first!" "And that'll give the gun the elevation it needs!"

Its ability to empower the player is incredible and it's not just in the music. The npc dialogue as well is filled with such empowerment . A prime example is in one of the missions where you're dogfighting a boss and one character says "You can do it! In fact, you're the only one who can!"

In it, he said that while there was plenty of things to be scared of - missiles, ace pilots, and so on - the one thing a Crusader was never afraid of was another fighter jet. They were taught to have such confidence in their skills and their craft that they would never be afraid to see an enemy fighter inbound.

The Alicorn is basically if you took a modern (future, really) nuclear aircraft carrier and made it a super-submarine. The "chanting" bits in the song titled Alicorn, even though they're in Latin, have always reminded me of the Russian songs in The Hunt for Red October.
