It’s a great shame that her part was largely cut for pacing reasons, her character never really got fully established before she died.

This has been a brilliant series of videos. As my all time favorite film, it's great to see new background information on "Alien". The book by Alan Dean Foster suggested other elements to this film, the Alien was supposed to use its tail more as it contained a paralyzing stinger. And there was always a question about the Alien and the "tail" scene with Lambert as to whether the Alien impregnated her.

I've heard the impregnation theory, but it sounds odd. Why knock her up if the xeno was gonna kill her, anyway? To see if it was possible? A power trip? Something else? I know that Lambert is shown hanging nude, but I dunno, still seems like a strange move on the part of the alien.

I don’t think the alien impregnated her because in the novel it describes the aftermath of her gruesome death.Also there’s no indication anywhere I’ve seen that the tail is a reproduction organ.

Lambert's death and odd positioning afterwards, hung from the ceiling somehow, is some of the best horror left up to your imagination I've seen. Even the small detail of her toes bent awkwardly as if in extreme pain upon expiring is unnerving. I'd rather not know anymore; her gasps and screams are plenty.

There was a published photograph of the scene where Ash sneaks-up on Ripley in Mother's control room. The photo shows Ash violently tugging on Ripley's hair, indicating that a brawl happened inside said room. I've never discovered whether this was simply for the press at the time or something actually shot, but deleted, with the fight moved outside of the control room. If anyone has any ideas or answers, I'd love to know.
@allsortofmovies
@allsortofmovies Ай бұрын
Yes, the fight scene has been shot a lot and changed several times. In one version, Ash surprises Ripley and aggressively attacks her without any conversation. The scene was filmed: July 31, 1978 November 24, 1978 November 28, 1978 November 30, 1978 December 1, 1978 December 4, 1978 The scene has changed because other scenes have changed or a part has been removed. What is seen in the film is not described in the script. www.avpgalaxy.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/alien1-still-031.jpg www.virtual-history.com/movie/photo/pr39/large/alien22.jpg

@@allsortofmovies The first pic is the one I remember being printed in magazines. Interesting that it was used on a lobby card, which begs the question - was a scene of Ash and Ripley duking it out in Mother's control room actually filmed or was that image merely staged to put on said lobby card?
@allsortofmovies
@allsortofmovies Ай бұрын
@@fredleggett923 No video footage has been released as proof of the filming, but the scene was shot in 6 days, which is a lot. The script was changed on July 17, 1978, i.e. before the first shooting. In the script, Ash behaves more aggressively than in the movie. There is also a script version where Ash attacks Ripley in the mother computer room, Ripley sets off an alarm in the room and she tries to get the laser pistol from the wall. I honestly can't answer your question with certainty, but as I said, the scene has been filmed a lot, there have been several scripts, and Ridley Scott made a lot of scenes according to his own vision, bypassing the script, as the final version seen in the film presents. I can't say that the version of the scene seen in the pictures wasn't filmed. There are more than 163 hours of filmed material in total, so if there are production photos, I personally want to believe that something was also filmed.
@fredleggett923
@fredleggett923 Ай бұрын
@@allsortofmovies Wow, I had no idea a laser pistol was intended to be in the Mother control room. Hmmm, I guess until/unless the footage surfaces, we'll never know if the scene was shot "in full" or only in part before Scott decided to move the altercation elsewhere. One thing I thought extremely weird/creepy is that Ash just suddenly appears beside Ripley in the control room, almost as if he teleported there. After all, the door to the room makes a very perceptible sound when opened and closed and we, as the audience, don't hear it that time. Now, I know this is (probably) to establish just how laser-focused Ripley was in trying to get answers from Mother, but it's still hellaciously off-putting for a multitude of reasons. Overall, I say it works considering Ash mostly likely had access to the room all along and didn't need a physical key. And he probably wanted to toy with Ripley a bit. Did Rawlings have to sift thru 163 hours of footage? If so, the man had the patience of a saint.
@allsortofmovies
@allsortofmovies Ай бұрын
@@fredleggett923 Rawlings didn't sit through all the material at least once, but he certainly worked long hours, like everyone else during the film's production. The film was edited at the same time as it was shot. B, C, D and H stages were reserved for Shepperton Studio for the film, where the sets were built. The film was filmed according to how the different sets were ready. Filming started on C stage, where Nostromo's A-deck set were ready. When the filming of the A-deck was finished, it was changed to the B-deck. After this, the material filmed on A-Deck was started to be edited, the filming moved to filming the planetoid's surroundings on H stage, and the C-deck scenes on B stage. This way of working was important for Ridley Scott, because this way he could see what the final film was becoming during filming. However, the downside was that when the sets were changed or destroyed, Ridley Scott was not able to fully reshoot the scenes. In the final stages of the production, for the reshoots of some scenes, small parts of the sets were rebuilt at Bray Studio. But Rawglins and Scott have been busy editing the film. The last filming for the movie was done on December 8, and the 2 hour, 30 minute long rough cut of the film was shown to a selected audience at the end of December 1978. Before this, Rawlings' approximately 3 hour version was completed. The first public showing of the film has been 13, May 1979, the official Premiere has been 25, May 1979

(Ripley) got it from attending to Parker after he tried to blow the alien out of the airlock and the alien escaped in time, but had his arm severed by the inner airlock door. Its acid blood corroded the door, depressurizing the corridor, leading to Ripley’s nosebleed.

@@robertstalnaker5728 It happens in the script before she goes to Mother. They shot some of it, but Ridley wasn’t happy with it (and I think it was getting expensive to shoot), so they left it out. Ripley’s nosebleed during the Mother scene had already been shot, and they didn’t have a way to edit it out and weren’t going to re-shoot it, so the audience sees this nosebleed for no apparent reason.
