Also in the theatrical version, the shot of Ripley falling into the furnace, the Queen Chestburster actually breaks out through Ripley’s chest as she’s falling, but Ripley, using the last of her strength, grabs the Queen and keeps it from escaping; bringing it into the furnace with her.

The problem is (at the time) if you loved Aliens you couldn’t divorce yourself from killing characters you had invested a lot into. That put Alien3 into a deep hole with fans in the first 5 minutes of the movie. It also negated everything Ripley did in Aliens basically not for plot but for studio and production issues. After 30 years I can appreciate the movie (specifically the assembly cut) but not when I saw it in theaters.

Since killing off Newt is a direct consequence of how Aliens ended, those who can't handle that should direct their anger at that movie instead of this one.

@@boretrk I’m not understanding your point. Newt, Hicks, Bishop and Ripley survived and were on their way home. Alien 3 retconned in a hidden special face hugger egg on the Sulaco that had a royal facehugger that could impregnate Ripley with a Queen and survive to impregnate another creature. That was all decided by the Alien 3 production. If they had wanted too they could have written a story that didn’t kill Newt or Hicks. It could have occurred a few years after Aliens to match the actresses age for example.

In the theatrical version the facehugger impregnates a rottweiler rather an ox, that's why the alien resembles a dog (and why the guy cleaning the fan shaft was looking for "Spike"). They originally tested using an actual dog (a whippet) in an alien costume for the newborn alien, but as it turned out, whippets have a very dainty gait that made it look too cute, and the idea was scrapped. Alien 3 is something of a flawed masterpiece & I think after the upbeat ending of Aliens with Ripley, Hicks & Newt being almost a family people found the dystopian vibe of Alien 3 hard to get their heads round. Hicks & Newt needed to die, to continue to keep Ripley isolated. Throughout the films Ripley’s story arc is that of a tragic hero with her having lost everything; the crew of the Nostromo, her daughter, the marines….& Newt. I totally agree, the story ended with Ripley’s swan dive into the furnace. I’ve always loved Alien3, having seen it upon release. But the assembly cut is a far superior film. That said, I do prefer Ripley’s swan dive from the theatrical cut; the chestburster coming out & Ripley holding onto it was her final heroic act to ensure the Queen died.

@laserpanda94Ай бұрын
@@davidanderson1639 I wish they'd kept the final chestburst too, it was such an abiding image and a great way to visualise the death of the xenomorph species. I think most people consider this the better shot and I'm not sure why they changed it. Someone in another thread did offer an interesting take. They suggested that removing the chestburster scene makes it clear that it is Ripley's choice to turn down the offer of help from Weyland Yutani and sacrifice herself, rather than having the birth of the alien effectively removing that choice and leaving her no option but to jump. You can even hear the character who falls into the fan call the dogs name, saying "is that you Spike?" moments before his demise. The original design for the alien had a real dog in an Alien suit, but it was never followed through. You can however still see videos of a Whippit running around in an alien suit in behind the scenes footage.
@PainocusАй бұрын
It's odd to me that the Spike line is still in the Assembly cut, consering it was not originally in that scene at-all and was dubbed in after the fact to tie it in with the dog-birth after they changed it from the ox.

"Studio butchery" is actually responsible for Ripley becoming the badass icon she is. In the original script for "Alien," shooting the Xenomorh with the harpoon doesn't succeed in knocking it out of the shuttle's hatch, and it goes up to Ripley and smashes its hand through the faceplate of her helmet rips her head off. In an alternate ending, the Xenomorh bites Ripley's head off then sits down at the radio and mimics Dallas' voice to send a distress call to Earth setting up a trap for the would be rescuers and gaining transportation back to Earth. It was a studio executive who hated these endings who insisted that the story be rewritten with Ripley defeating the Xenomorph and surviving.
@AnonEyeMouseАй бұрын
I've never heard that in the many hours of interviews and media I've watched about this franchise. However, if it IS true, that exec needs an award, because those endings sound terrible.
@waterbeauty85Ай бұрын
@@AnonEyeMouse It was around the dawn of the era of "twist ending" horror films that made it look like the main protagonist prevailed and survived but would then surprise the audience with a jump scare revealing that the killer was still a threat and the killing off everyone in the final scene.

Remember at the end of the first Alien movie when Ripley blasts it with the thrusters of the shuttle? Remember how it wasn't incinerated, merely pushed back? Molten lead was a good idea, sadly it only worked to piss it off to the point it broke its instinctual programming and went after Ripley for the kill.

At 31:50 (for George), the xenomorphs are not a product of evolution but rather bioengineering. Also, please watch Alien Resurrection (aka Alien 4). I actually liked it more than Alien 3. The actor who played Tuco Salamanca is in it.
@rev.chuckshingledeckerАй бұрын
The bioengineering crap didn’t come into existence until Prometheus decades later. The first and second films tell they story as if they are part of the natural order. Every comic from the 80s and 90s played off of this as well. One even suggesting that on their home world they were kept in check by other even more horrifying life forms but once off the planet they became invasive with no natural predators. Ridley Scott tried to do a a bunch of Retcon stuff and say it was always his plan - which is just some George Lucas level myth.

Glad to see you get back to the Alien franchise! Alien 3 (or Alien Cubed as it's wierdly titled) is a movie I think get's a lot more hate than it should, but I feel it brings a lot of additional lore and new unexplored angles to the alien franchise (like the idea of the alien taking on characteristics of the host creature). Some additional tidbits: - The theatrical release used a dog instead of a cow, so good call in saying the alien looks like a puppy. It's why the guy in the vent was calling out to the alien thinking it's his dog. - This alien type is referred to as the 'runner' alien in the canon. - They wanted to do the alien in 'dog mode' practical at first by putting a dog in costume.... buuuut... let's just say it's the funniest shit you've ever seen (look for it on KZbin) XD - Good eye on the facehugger webbing details. In the canon this type of facehugger produces queen casts. - The Weyland Yutani commando's at the end are called 'dog catchers' and they use the pulse rifles from Aliens. - As you mentioned because of the cut 40 minutes there are some GLARING plotholes in the theatrical cut. For example Golick freeing the alien was cut, so he just straight up dissapears in the latter half of the movie. :/ As some people have already pointed out, Ripley is in Alien Resurrection (althought the title kinda spoils it) so I suggest giving it a watch. It's more... I don't think the word 'goofy' applies... more camp maybe, than the other movies but is still a fun watch which rounds out the quadrilogy. Why I like all four movies that it rounds out what I call the 'fear quadrilogy': Alien = Finding your fear Aliens = Confronting your fear Alien3 = Succumbing to your fear Alien: Resurrection = Becoming your fear PS: The music in this one is also frikkin' amazing!

I saw the original movie first in cinema. And I didnt ever think that it was bad, like critics did. There are 2 major differences to the directors cut: In first version the carrier was the Dog instead of the Cow. Which i found slightly better... maybe the CGI-Baby looked to cute. And the secon difference, which i think they shouldnt cut it out... When ripley jumps upside down, the chestburster comes out of her. And with her last breath, she holdt the QueenBaby close, until they both dump into the metal. imho this ist the photographicly most beautiful Alienmovie. Fincher was a total rookie, and they didnt give him any chance to let this movie succeed. But you can tell the style, the storytelling and his terrifying sense for these "no-way-youre-kidding"-Moments. I like this movie even an inch more than camerons one. Its not that wildwest shooting. its more intelligent, like scotts origin.

I saw this opening night, and I've loved David Fincher ever since. The Assembly Cut is certainly the way to go, although we'll never get a true "Director's Cut". Fox really did him dirty.
@brianwashines2645Ай бұрын
The problem with sequels is that there's an expectation that the public wants it bigger and louder than the last one, which was what "Aliens" was, it was a bigger and louder "Alien". There was always the idea that religion play a part of the third installment; the original draft taking place on a planet made entirely out of wood, like a church planet. This was scrapped. What I saw in the theaters when I was 13 however, despite the logistical nightmares behind it, did make an impression on me, even though I did love James Cameron's film a lot, I understood with the Director's Cut of "Aliens" that Ripley appears to greet each opening of the subsequent films with a loss. In "Aliens" it was the daughter, but in "Alien³" it was the entire "family" she gained in the prior film. This tells a lot about the extensive damage such a creature can have on just a single life, imagine a whole crew of people. To think, the three first Alien movies had great, talented young directors at the helm but the 3rd one appeared to fall under the most scrutiny and butchery at the hands of its studio industry. A true Fincher "debut" wouldn't happen until he made "Se7en" next but you do see his talent for visuals here. "Alien: Resurrection" was written by Joss Whedon. I don't know if that's fair warning considering that you've seen his work on "Firefly" and the MCU, but it is a stylistic shift from the tone of this one. It has its fans.

In the theatrical cut the alien comes out of a dog, not an oxen. Also they do not capture the alien because the studio thought it removed some of its threat if these unarmed men would be able to capture it. Fincher argued that it created more tension because the viewers would think "Wait, it's captured? Well, now what? It has to get out, obviously. How is that going to happen?" The scene cuts from the accidental fire to them arguing "What are we going to do now?" when Ripley goes off to scan her body to see if she's been implanted.
