@WSS_the_OG Malford Milligan. You need to hear the 4 albums (Incl live cd dvd) he did with Storyville. He was at his best then. He also did a brilliant audition on The Voice America doing Tina Turners Let's stay together. I think Christina Aguillera and that guy who sang Crazy were in the judges chairs.No one turned around. It was liberally crazy and their comments were totally ignorant. You should see the comments on the clip ridiculing the judges

@@groovedohg I saw the disgraceful clip of him on The Voice (as I went on a mad search to learn more about him). Malford is an absolute master of his craft, in my opinion. Incredible voice, incredible passion, and such versatility. He is criminally under-appreciated, or rather, tragically unknown. He seems like such a great human being too, in general.

Agree that there's way fewer artists who put out this genre of music - I would say that EJ has a unique sound anyway, so that's hard to find - having said that, there's still good music being put out nowadays, but it's harder to find in the big (substantial mediocre/formulaic stuff) tsunami that's put out. Personally I like Mark Lettieri's and Cory Wong's music really a lot, that material being funkier than EJ for example.

I randomly tuned into this Austin City Limits show one Saturday night in 2001. My TV only received three channels at the time. Fortunately, one of them was PBS. I had never heard of Eric Johnson, but he was the best guitarist I had ever seen or heard. Also remember being impressed that he could sing. Have been a big fan ever since and have seen him live several times.

Caught this tour on Boston..at the Avalon I still remember Malford's vocals and the clubs sound was awesome! This might be Erics strongest period....because he is totally ON here. About the 4th time I'd heard him live at this point starting with his showcase gigs to get the TONES contract back in '86.

@@knightfall9394 I actually usually leave a notice about copyright on my uploads. I checked this video and it was not visible, so I rectified that. It is a stange thing actually. I have uploaded some concerts from TV shows like BBC Sight and Sound and Austin City Limits. Some were removed instantly and while others remain available. THe weird thing is that I have uploaded some concerts I filmed and used my photos of the concert as a heading and these were copyrighted. That maybe because I reference and tag the songs in the concert for better viewing. Maybe if I didnt include the songs, there would be no copyright... I dont know. I uploaded an Australian TV documentary on Tool last year but that was removed immediately. To be honest, I think it at times is just random. I am not in this for fame or money. I dont even ask viewers to like or subscribe. I would only do that if this channel was about me.

@@knightfall9394 Yeah. It's a strange thing. I am in the Big Wreck Facebook page. Big Wreck recently had a ppv streamcast that I missed. Some artists like Devin Townsend regularly did ppv streamcasts and someone uploads them virtually within hours and they are still available. Dev is obviously aware of it. In Big Wrecks case however, I actually posted on the Big Wreck FB page about the Stream, mainly because the upload was recorded via a smart phone to the TV and the sound and visual was not very good. It was taken down immediately. I have never been advised to delete any of my videos but would do so in a heartbeat. It is a sad state of affairs when so much archive footage from our favourite musicians do not see the light of day. I would have purchased the Big Wreck stream if it was available on DVD or blu ray but so far.. nothing. Devs streamcasts are all available on dvd br. As I say, I have BBC etc uploads that cause no problem. I don't understand why honestly. I also uploaded a Doyle Bramhall concert which looks like Austin City Limits and is my most viewed video. However, I tried to upload Arc Angels Much Music (Canada TV) feature and it was blocked straight away. There are so many official dvds being uploaded by Users without deletion. As I say, it's strange

This is around the time I discovered EJ and feel lucky to have seen him live many times. I sure don't know what has happened to him. He doesn't play like this anymore. For like the last 10 years he's been playing the same cascading boring runs, his tone is not as good, and he is just off. I attributed it to possibly his age, but I don't know.
@peterginsburg2465
@peterginsburg2465 Жыл бұрын
Yes, Eric has slowed down a bit. Instead of "lightning," he's now just "blazing." He's commented that he's taking it more easily on tour, instead of his former super perfectionistic self. When I've seen him in the early 2000's, he was super hyper on stage, with little to no comments. These days, he jokes around on stage and is much more relaxed. Also, Tommy Taylor commented about a tour a number of years back, that some days Eric was occasionally a little off on some nights, as anyone on tour would do, but still hitting all the notes. His tour schedules are still pretty brutal. I think, he's still changing tones during numbers as always though. At about 69, he's still doing remarkably well for basically a one man show. This show was from Feb 3, 2001.

@@peterginsburg2465 I knew this was in 2001, but didn't know it was in February. I saw him live for the first time that same year, but I believe in June. I have the ticket stub somewhere. And the next day I drove to Austin to watch G3 with Satriani, Vai, and Petrucci. To my pleasant surprise at the end of the G3 when all 3 were jamming together Satch said there weren't enough guitarist out here, so let's bring out Austin's own Eric Johnson in which the Crowd Exploded. Great Memory. So I understand him slowing down cause his age, but his playing he become so repetitive. I mean mostly his soloing. His chord work is still amazing. But his improvised solos are all the same. It's like he's stuck in the pentatonic box afraid to get out of it. He will always be my favorite player, but I just can't go see him anymore after being lucky enough to have seen him back in the glory days. And yes, I remember he used to not talk at all for the most part. Plus his tone used to give me shivers it was so good.

If you're coming here to appreciate this version (the best version) don't scroll to the bottom to read the loser takes on it. Yes obviously he is nervous and playing ahead of the beat. I'm sure Eric is a little embarrassed by this version. But (sorry) this is bigger than Eric. This is so good that his own taste doesn't matter because it gets perpetually worse, slower, and more boring from here on. This is one of the most amazing moments in the history of electric guitar. A prodigy somehow gets a full ACL show and tears it up with a huge array of amps and a vintage Strat. It's a fairy tale. It's a lightning bolt. Don't analyze it and compare it to your own highly trained playing. You suck at the guitar, that's why no one is talking about you. This is up at the level of The Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock and you know it (or you should).
