The flame sounds like the problem of “which way does a helium balloon inside of a van move when the van accelerates?” It was tested by Veritasium (if I remember right) and the balloon moved towards the direction of acceleration (forwards to the front of the van) because the air inside the van shifted as the van moved, much like how you feel the acceleration the air inside got pushed back and the balloon “floated” to the “top” of the new air fluid positioning. The flame may have done something similar (idk I haven’t seen this movie)

@soareleonard75702 ай бұрын
There is science behind it. When acceleration increases, pressure inside sealed containers also increases. Pressure is force over surface. Force is mass times acceleration. Increase in acceleration increases gas pressure in the lighter. The diameter of the escape gas that ignites the flame remains constant, so the higher pressure leads to a higher, leaner, gas plume. But the joint smoked in one go is bullshit. Depending on the G force, air can be extra-pushed out of the lungs by the pressure. When the G force stops, you'd inhale a larger volume of air to compensate the squeeze, so if you'd have a cigarette in your mouth then, you could take a super puff of smoke. But that's not what happened.
@soareleonard75702 ай бұрын
Actually, pressure increases at the bottom of the inside of the sealed container (assuming we accelerate upwards) , and reduces at the top, so it would cancel out. ...but in a lighter, the bottom half in uncompressible liquid, while only the top is the gas, so there may be a way for it to work

This movie reminded me of the Prometheus scene where the "professional expert xenobiologist" (or whatever he was called), basically sticks his face right in front of the egg and gets the consequences. I have been watching X-Files episodes lately and in one of them, the same thing happens. The supposed experts who have done this their entire lives just suddenly forget all contamination protocols and even masks in some cases and get sprayed by a boil or something. Why do they write them as cool science experts in the beginning, just to dump it all away for a scene? It would be more believable if they science guy was: "Oh hey, wait here a moment, I gotta check something." and then one of the rando marines or whomever does it instead.

Why did this movie, a movie with no scientists, remind you of a few dumb scientist characters in Prometheus? Also, while it is correct that a xenobiologist probably wouldn't go right up to a strange egg or alien creature they've never seen before, A regular person like me probably would. But... Not 100% sure they used that in any comics but somewhere they mentioned that as an idea. And a other noted to Xeno's being an animal. Fun fact about a thing the movie got wrong: 50:57 While it is correct, that the inclination of the two orbits changed and they had 2 intersection points, the movie was still wrong. The ring and the space station had the same altitude (distance to the planet), which means that their orbital speed would be the same. So while they would intersect two times during a full orbit, the space station would not revolve faster around the planet than the rings. They would collide, but it would only be a gentle collision. The space station would not drag across the rings, as shown in the flim and be destroyed at all. It would be perfectly fine and would probably don't even get a dent in the hull.
@MusicalZombie4 ай бұрын
Just to clarify: It would actually be possible what we see in the movie if the space station is orbiting into the opposite direction than the rings. Then it would collide hard and be destroyed. But that's something that nobody would do in real life, because the rings consist out of many small objects and if one of them would have slightly different inclination, it would pose a high and unnecessary collision risk due to the enourmous speeds. So you always want to flow with the rings. Edit: Just randomly noticed a comment in your stream that someone mentioned that James Earl Jones died. RIP. :(
@naemek96752 ай бұрын
@@MusicalZombie yeah i assumed it orbited the opposite way which really wouldnt be a smart thing to do, even just setting up its orbit would create lots of problems. @orionx794 ай бұрын
Ehhh 99% sure no.
@orionx794 ай бұрын
Here is a simple explanation why. It takes an Earth's mass in atoms and the energy of all those atoms to create a gravity that you can jump against. To even be able to concentrate enough energy into a single spot in order to create a gravitational effect would be like trying to control a planet's worth of atoms in energy. In the space the size of a ship. Then there are other effects that come into play when you try to hold to much energy on a area. So theoretically its not impossible that energy and mass are interchangeable, but in practice, that's alot of energy not to go boom, your talking type 3 civ there. "Faking" gravity with centripetal force is best we could do for long periods of time.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I believe, like some other comments I've seen, that the elongated flame might be due to similar physics as with the balloon-in-an-accelerating-car experiment I've seen. Car acceleration forward causes the air/atmosphere in the internal volume of the car to be "shoved" backward relative to the car, causing higher air density in the rear and lower density in the front. The balloon then counterintuitively shifts forward when the car accelerates as the higher density air in the rear pushes it forward. I would assume a similar pressure differential affecting the flame.

(Ignore if he discusses this, I haven’t finished the video) The acids said in Alien: Romulus to make up the blood of the xenomorph (hydrochloric and hydrofluoric, if memory serves) could have been chosen better, in my opinion. I think HF is a decently cool component because it famously behaves in ways most other acids do not (such as eating glass), but it and HCl’s pKa scores are rather unimpressive (4 and -6.1 respectively). Neither of them are even considered superacids (yes that is an actual term). Some better options: magic acid, fluoroantimonic acid (-28 pKa I think), triflic acid (-14.7 pKa)

My guess for the lighter flame is that the increase in acceleration leads to an increase in the pressure built up around the expelling gasses. But if the person was travel towards the star at relativistic speeds, the star would actually appear "fast forwarded". I think i got that right?

Plasma has less density than the air, no? Denser air goes down and less dense plasma goes up. If you increase weight then this effect should be stronger - making the flame go up faster. That's my reasoning about it. I agree about the superfast joint though.. that doesn't make sense to me.

I know I'm a day late, but the time dilation difference wouldn't "speed up" until the object moving toward you slowed down. Objects at light speed will always appear to travel through time slower, the distance isn't at relevant as the speed if I remember my relativity correctly.

Dunno why they wouldn't get sucked into the intake vents but I don't care. 6) Drones are the ones who build the hives, so they have to have an ability to slowly extrude some kind of resin material from their body. While their instincts are basic and animalistic, it has been pointed that they are not dumb. Maybe building a protective cocoon while floating in space is taking things too far, dunno. 8) Good, because Alien 4 is an embarrasment and this movie took the one good idea that movie had and did it better. Now we do not have to ever think of that traimwreck of a movie ever again.

All clearly stated making it even more confusing. 5) That does not explain the sudden loss of momentum when Zero-G is initiated. Also if thats going to be the "excuse" why is nothing else effected (of which would be in Zero-G). 6) The "creature/human creation/alien/god/whatever Ridley decides" is none thermic. Either space harms it or it doesn't... if it's taking the slow time to build a cocoon (which is shown in Alien as taking time) it is clearly not effected by space and has no need for the cocoon. Also they suddenly don't shed skin anymore when growing "in the middle of the lore" and create a "private part" cocoon. 8) But this movie is not better... The entire movie reaked of Ridley's horrid "going to change this" style... there is a reason Ridley has not got above 80% in reviews for any movie for over a decade... he has lost it. His movies are meh at best. He should not be allowed near Alien again... he did not even write or design the original Alien or Alien film... yet before making Prometheus he openly said he hated where the franchise went and just wanted re-write it all. Even when it comes to something like having a printer that can print metal parts in space, it works for printing things that can help with minor repairs works well, but to do something bigger would be a massive scale. Also, printing metal still requires the metal material feed. Does have to be part of the rotation because of the fact that it would not work in space otherwise. Edit Side Note: For theory on Xenomorphs growth and sizing, it could make a small amount of sense if the egg duplicates the DNA from the host before changing, altering it since it is a Xenomorph. Not great logic or perfect science. As far as a natural organism basis, the engineers did not seem to actually have created them. They seemed to have source coding in hopes of making these things into a weapon and that was a mistake. However, that is more just personal belief on that one.

I literally paused this video at the moment Kyle said "we are going to spoil" and unpaused it now after a week after seeing the movie at the cinema. The Romulus is not a GOOD ALIEN movie - but it is a decent space cowboy pap-pap bang-bang ooooh xenomorphs!!! --type of movie. Let me explain. And no I don't have hair - and even if I had - it couldn't help me (no one sees me). Either way - although Ridley Scott participated as some sort of a producer in the Romulus movie - I don't know if this movie can actually be called "cannon" in respect to all other Alien movies (at least those with our mommy Sigourney in them... Jesus just learned the spelling of her name and it's... intense). So all the other - cannon, at least - Alien movies - deal with serious, deep subjects. Is the creator - as a human - superior to his creation - a mighty robot? Will the humanity screw up its new habitat - just like the old ones? Are we ok with sped-up evolution - or should we just remain us? Can the robot kill some humans - in order to save some other humans? Wait.. this was literally in this movie as well. As well as some remarks that emotions are useless and reason and business (what's best for the company) should dominate. Anyway. At the opening scene of the Covenant - you get immediately - that the movie is going to be something grandeur. Here - in Romulus - there's a bunch of darkness and teens who shoot into space while they wait in line on the planet... which will by the way experience a soon space ship crash in some hours... whom otherwise no one had noticed. Also - there are LOTS of close-up scenes - of our beloved xeno-baby. He (she??) is left right and centre - and sometimes feels like overcompensating for the lack of the depth of the movie. Also - I don't know if Kyle is discussing these two issues or not - but the single crab baby that was stuck on a door glass trying to suck up to a face - made me think. How does it know it needs to enter a human through the mouth? How has the crap... sorry, crab evolved this instinctive, split-second action - where has it gotten all the genes - through how many evolution cycles - where has he gotten all the humans - in many, many generations - to practice on? One might argue other aliens... like the little green men - also have mouths - but maybe they don't. So where has the crab gotten its talents? Because its prime game is human. Also - one more thing - why is the xeonomorph killing humans? Why? They don't eat humans, they don't use them for anything when they're dead - so what's in it for them? Because they would literally be able to breed more xenomorphs - if they had more humans. Remember - they need human faces (and rib cages) to spawn into the world. So why do they keep killing us - if they need us? This is partly explained by the Covenant - being that all the xenos and crabs have been secretly gene-engineered in a matter of 30 years by an evil robot spending his lonely time on a deserted planet.... and making the "best xenomorph" (or lifeform) that is possible and not giving the human race a chance... but... really? That's the explanation? Kinda lame. Also - in the beginning, the gravity machinery priming was a couple seconds - and in the final scenes like a minute or so. Artistic liberty? Who knows. Either way - in terms of IMDB score, I give the Romulus a solid six (with two points of them for xeno-closeups alone) as a space-shooter - but not as an Alien-movie. Thanks for the video - from Latvia. Edited: in the scene where they heat up the room to "blind" crab vision... They all enter through a wide potal-like gate into the room... The crabs would clearly have no difficulty seeing them contrasted to the cold background of the hallway. Just saying. Once again thanks for the discussion.

The explanation for the joint/ lighter bit is two fold: 1) the rule of cool always takes precedence over fact and 2) Ridley Scott is a washed up hack. "How can you say that's not how the flame would act? Were you there in space with them? No? Then shut the fuck up!" -Ridley Scott, probably

you don't need to deliver all this stuff into space from earth. just procure most of the stuff you need from the moon and get it into orbit with a mass driver there.

Alien Romulus was made to secure an Alien (tm) franchise, on behalf of Sir Ridley F**ing Scott. The guy is old, he won't be making another movie. He wants Alien to be a franchise that lasts for many years to come, by any means possible.

I do want a third alien prequel. I enjoyed Prometheus. Sadly Ridley Scott listend to the fans only in wrong places and fell in love with the android when they made Covenant. The people are still stupid, but now there is an alien in it, attached at the end. I hate David beeing the creator of xenomorphs. But still, end the trillogy and possibliy write yourself out of this stupid development, somehow. Probably not possible, as the face hugger is a regression to the dust. Its like, in Prometheus you are dissappointed that there was no alien, and in Covenant you wish there wer no aliens (becaue David made them).

In short... no. It does not make sense. Prometheus and Covenant polluted the waters of this franchise with needlessly convoluted and ill-fitting diarrhoea. This once-beloved franchise is now hot garbage.

I don't understand your comparison of deaths in the immediate aftermath of a nuclear incident like Chernobyl, which you say is in the dozens, versus what? All deaths related to fossil fuels [during the course of the stream]? What does that later thing even mean? Deaths during the mining or drilling? Deaths during the transportation? Deaths from people getting into car crashes? Deaths from global warming? What are you including in that fossil fuel number? What about all the long-term deaths from Chernobyl, say due to increased cancer rates among people who had been living or working in the area at the time? Or people who have since gone tramping through the exclusion zone without proper protection? Or eating contaminated meat from animals that grew up therein? Are your numbers actually comparable? Because it isn't obvious at all that they are. I'm all in favor of nuclear, it does seem to me the only viable way for truly green energy generation for the foreseeable future, but let's make sure we're giving out good information here. The way you phrased the two things doesn't sound like an apples to apples comparison. Maybe it is and it was just poorly phrased, or maybe it isn't, but even if you did a more properly apples to apples comparison nuclear would still be orders of magnitude safer (which is my expectation), but let's do be more mindful about what we're saying and how.

also we use more fossil fuel than nuclear hence its incident is higher than nuclear. If we use more nuclear instead then we will get more nuclear incident.
