In respecting of some mythic (or memorable) characters of the saga, I can't understand this question properly, what's inside the mind of all this fans asking for the return of Ripley, Newt, Shaw and David (and why not the dog alien???). So it has to be that I search for other things within all those movies. I enjoy them or not regardless the presence / absence of those characters. If the narrative is strong enough, it doesn't need this attachment, this chaining to the past. I am thinking just now in The kingdom of the planet of the apes movie because it was very disappointing for me. What's the sense of all those pretended homage scenes that you made for the fans, if you have a film that just doesn't work?
@liamphillips73155 ай бұрын
The blueprint for anything that might follow is absolutely clear in the first film right up to the death of Dallas. After that things are carried by fairly formulaic momentum. But tone and essence are right there for extrapolation. Aliens is fantastic but is ultimately only one good extrapolation possible out of MANY. A3 had some potential but it was creatively castrated by committee. All the rest of the films are tiresome schlock looking to exploit you for a few bucks. The first film had adults dealing with an adult situation in an adult way and the second followed in continuity of mature approach. They bungled the derelict pilot, the Titans, any origin ideas, all the Weyland stuff, all the android stuff, all the Ripley/Newt/Hicks stuff. You really have to go very, very far out of your way to fuck up the possibilities set up by BOTH the original AND Aliens. Always hopeful but seriously, man, how many times are you gonna kick when Lucy the Idiot Studio Schmuck is holding the football? We'll see.

this constant shitting on cgi is nauseating and just marketing. there are ups and down sides to both aproaches
@MikesMonsters5 ай бұрын
They didn't shit on the CGI, they just said it always looked better with the puppet when they tried. Fede uses a lot of CGI in the new movie, and we see it in the newest trailer. He's not against using it, just prefers to have it done in camera.
@bg71585 ай бұрын
@@MikesMonsters didn't he say " I told the cg guys to look for reference at the puppet. It looks just always better"(I'm paraphrasing). puppets work for close ups or interaction with actors but show the creature full frame and the illusion breaks. Alien 3 was a puppet and we know how that looked in movement(same team btw). I just think it's a bit simple to put prostetics/puppets on this pedal stool, which the director does in my opinion
@eldertoys14095 ай бұрын
Over time I have come to the conclusion that the problem with the discussion about cgi vs practical is not whitewashing what the real problem is. They never seem to want to say what are the factors that make a production decide to go full CGI in scenes that, apparently, do not need it. Is it a practicality problem? Creative control of the final effect? On budget? A "creative" decision? I can venture an answer, for example about how on a technical level it is difficult to match an animatronic with some extra CGI element (example: the torso of the animatronic T-Rex from Jurassic Park with its CGI legs). But I think that certain films need CGI not to be the first solution for fantastic creatures, but rather a complement (as Guillermo Del Toro does with his monsters). A good horror director has the duty of being able to make scenes with animatronics and makeup fx without resorting to CGI all the time. For that he must use his creativity and his staging so that the monster is there, in situ, interacting with the actors. CGI should be used to fix and enhance, not to make the entire creature.
@bg71585 ай бұрын
@@eldertoys1409 Well I don't think one is better than the other and we tend to devalue CGI. They are equal in their own right in my opinion and cgi is not just there to enhance the puppet - Think about the orang-utan in the new Planet of the Apes. These emotions could have never been achived with an actor in a rubber mask. Again - how would you do the Dog-Alien convincingly with a puppet? You get these fluent movements only with cgi and then we are not talking about enhancement but a full cg creature. Budget is also no explenation for the use of cgi over puppets, becaus vfx houses like ILM are way more expencive then bulding an alien suit. At the end of the day it boils down to a director who is experienced with practical and vfx. Think of Neil Bloomkamp with District9. It had Weta Digital and Weta Workshops working hand in hand. And Bloomkamp has a background in VFX. If a director tells they "only used practical" it just shows me their ignorance. It's like you only eat with a fork but never want to use a spoon, lol
@B00M3RD00M3R5 ай бұрын
@@bg7158 I can understand why you'd get that impression, but for the most part even people who put practical effects on a pedestal rely heavily on CGI. That appears to be the case here. I think the point he's trying to get across is that the practical effects can serve to really ground the movie and make it more immersive, while also giving perfect image reference for any CGI that needs to be done afterwards. VFX artists do this all the time, altering their passes to more closely match what was shot in camera to make the visual effects as grounding as the practical ones. I think if you spoke with them, they would agree that there are ups-and-downs to both approaches, but I think their point here is that using some practical effects gave them the desired starting point to work from, rather than just using a chrome ball for lighting reference.
