Im Linux gamer and i can play most games via wine. Updating drivers is only typing pacman -Syu in terminal and IT takes me max 1 minute.

Linux is not quite ready, yet. However I think it's only a matter of time. It is possible to play AAA titles at the moment, but it is not yet ready for the mainstream. Games don't always work out of the box and still require some tweaking + we have the issues with easy anti-cheats in some games. So linux have some problems for sure, but I think it will get better. Linux have a major community working on wine and lutris. Valve has done a lot with proton and more people are trying out Linux on their gaming rig. So we see that stuff is happening. Besides: The fact that linux is open source might help the game industry in a lot of ways. Game developers can move to linux if windows does anything shady (like making games incompatible with DirectX, making windows a walled garden or something, idk) My point is that the game industry has linux as an alternative if shit hits the fan. Vulkan might also make DirectX redundant.

If it is what appears in the video it seems quite easy to install in GNU / Linux There is just one line: sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall (a command that is practically self-explanatory, sudo are administrator privileges in case you didn't know) And the other 3 commands seem to be only in case you use a 32-bit system (correct me in case that i'm wrong).

@@Syndicate_Cookie wine is not an emulator, it dosent emulate windows, it works by translation, think of it like this, windows speaks English and Linux speaks Russian, wine will translate from English to Russian. An emulator would simulate the English language, create it from scratch essentially, if we emulate the whole system (whole language in this case) the performance is really bad as the pc would need to translate everything in the English dictionary, some more people will definitely keep adding to this lol

@@lonkslonkolious4916 No it's not Some things are completely broke and can't be fixed with terminal commands. For example Pop OS couldn't select the right resolution and xrandr couldn't either. Now I'm running Mint which is much better. Still I had to modify a Perl script to get a blue light filter to work properly. I submitted a pull request and got it accepted which I'm proud of though. Still a better experience than running Windows but it's not perfect.

It's hard to believe how far things have come with game compatibility on Linux. I remember even just a few years ago my two main games were CSGO and DOTA2 simply because they were native. I had several native games from GOG installed, as well, but beyond that, I just played console emulators. Today, I have been able to install and play most of my entire Steam library. Even games like Ghost Exile, Deep Rock Galactic, Mad Max, Skyrim SE, Soulcalibur 6, Grim Dawn, Sims 4, and that new TMNT game just install and go like it's NBD. Even some games with EAC work correctly. It's really weird seeing as how I grew up having to struggle to get a handful of Windows games to install and even if they did, they had weird graphical glitches. The irony now is, the only game I've had to struggle to get running right was the Linux native version of ETQW, as it's super old. Also, any Windows games with kernel-level anti-cheat can't run at all, like Valorant or Modern Warfare... yet. ;) Wait, I just saw a video on how to get Valorant rolling in a VM. Well, hell!

Comments like this prevent linux gaming from growing. Just like calling everyone racist and a nazi makes them hate you and your cause. Yes the commands were simple, but they are a barrier to entry. If you want linux to become more popular for developers to support, more people must use it. People won't want to associate with toxic users that would call them a "windows noob". I welcome anyone to try linux and i encourage distrubutions to make updating things easier and needing the terminal less. Also developers should use systems like flatpak for making linux apps rather than building a code for arch, ubuntu, and whatever flavor of the month version of linux is out.

Windows has to accommodate all possible hardware with a single generic image, with the new approach taken since Windows 10, it's especially troublesome, and with the ARM architecture Microsoft would have serious problems with this, due to the lack of standards and fragmentation, already severe with x86, things like Windows Update and the deployment of the updates themselves are absolute garbage too. Open source operating systems on the other hand can be optimized for certain types of hardware, which can mean higher performance and stability, you also have distributions focused on stability and reliability, simply freedom of choice.

Driver updates are more streamlined in Linux. At least in some distros, your drivers are automatically updated along with all your other packages during an update. That's better than having an intrusive pop-up or having to launch geforce-experience imo. This extends to retro-emulators too(just like every other package you own). They're all updated the same way, so no need to have a bunch of update wizards with their own pop-ups (or worse having to reinstall to get the latest version).

The number one reason I switched to linux is the fucking updates. As a developer, I hate having to restart my computer and setup my environment again and lost browser tabs, etc. Windows fucking update would restart itself and sometimes even corrupt files. On linux I can shush the updates and install when I get time.

@@ABaumstumpf uhm.. you do know that most of the AMD and Intel drivers are build in the Kernel right? So if you have a kernel update all your drivers are up to date. Nvidia is a different thing you indeed have to manually download the drivers on some distro's, but people who have those GPU's will make sure that they use a distro that come with those drivers pre installed. apt, dnfm and zypper are package managers, most people with a Desktop Enviroument use either Discover from KDE or SoftwareCenter from gnome, there are also options as flatpak and snap which are both buildin in the KDE and Gnome Stores so your argument is kinda invalid.

Driver updates in Linux are from my experience easier to install than on Windows; heck, I even got a notification once for a Logitech unifying receiver FIRMWARE update that I absolutely wasn't expecting. It does kinda depend on which distribution you're using, but most of the common distributions are pretty consistent in this regard from my experience.

​@Till Tindemann I can't remember precisely because at the time I was distro-hopping a bit, but I think it was Fedora. Ubuntu-based distros are probably similar. I've since settled on Arch (again; I always seem to come back to it) because I love to tinker so it appeals to me; however updating carelessly on Arch can be breaking because the repo is bleeding edge so it doesn't really have this kind of automatic update notification stuff by default. I don't know if Arch-based distros like Manjaro offer the same driver-update functionality as Fedora and Ubuntu but I wouldn't be surprised.

AMD drivers are already included in kernel, and Nvidia drivers are installed pretty much the same way as on windows. For me as a power user, Linux is better for work and productivity, and windows is just for DirectX games. Also, in my opinion, all cloud game streaming services suck at the moment because of noticeble input lag and reduced video quality.

Linux may have a smaller number of supported games, but if a game is supported (especially if it runs natively), the frame rate is usually much better than on Windows. One of the games that has the biggest difference in performance on Linux is Minecraft, which runs on my PC on Windows with around 300-400 frames per second (FPS); however, when I boot into Ubuntu, I get around 1200-1300 FPS. That huge leap is because Java is much more supported on Linux and tends to run much better

I run a Linux mainly, so anything that does not run on linux I just have a dual boot windows, and that is cracked lmao, it is so easy, just by changing the KMS you defeat its security. Also, since I run cracked windows as well, I can say, as long as you did not download software or a 'cracked' iso, and just did the command prompt activation trick where you swap the activation server, you should be fine.

It's not like they just compile a game and then the OS developers have to figure out how to make it run. Do you know how an API like DirectX works? Or how MS made monopolizing deals with hardware vendors to center proprietary driver focus on their platform? Not to mention that many games would take little to no extra coding to compile for Linux. In many cases, a simple tick of a box in the engine is all it takes. So yes that is exactly how it works. Software is made compatible with the OS, not the other way around. 1. Many information is wrong or not precise enough. Why the hell is there a command line related to wine install to illustrate the difficulty in the driver section, which by the way is not a problem : it has been a long time since I had to go into terminal to install drivers, even proprietary ones. I would even say it is easier on Linux as you just have to go to the "additional drivers" section of the software manager to install them (Ubuntu and derived). For FPS stability, I do not see the point : Linux and Windows have no structural reason for that. 2. Despite I am a Linux user, I acknowledge that windows is better for gaming than Linux, Only because the library is far bigger. Wine helps a lot with old games that are painful to play with Windows (ie AOE2, Command and Conquer 3), but when it comes to current games, it is a nightmare. And many of them are not working at all. The only reason why I still have a dual boot on 2 computers is that : Ring of Elysium, World of Tanks, Raceroom experience and Project cars will not work on Linux.... Si in the end, the advantages given by Linux are totally annihilated by the lack of AAA (and popular, not only AAA) games on that platform. To me, Windows wins by KO, even if the situation dramatically improved along past years thanks to the involvement of Valve/Steam.

I'm not sure of the veracity of this comment, but in some cases, Linux Distros will actually deliver better performance. I noticed this using Proton via steam, more specifically playing Warframe, i could notice a better fluidity than in Windows. Both with updated drivers according to their respective versions and approximate systems usage time. However, unfortunately, i couldn't infer the FPS count, only the fluidity in-game and the more nimble loading screens. (I used Pop!_Os 21.04 and Windows 10 in this case) In addition... certain things will not always be problems reported to the systems, but to the users themselves. If you want a system fully optimized to your taste and scope of productivity I would recommend without a shadow of a doubt, Linux Distros, and not wanting to rule out the possibility of playing on penguin systems i still have to agree that on a larger scale of experiences and availability the Windows wins in the gaming category.

Well basically all streaming services are put up on Linux. Also gpu drivers are usually updated with the system or managed with built in driver utility when you want to force specific one. When I understand this video was made for laughs, it's not on point..

Agreed. This video is about the experience for general gamers many of whom are not always comfortable using command line (Which still many Linux distros demand for update/installation) or optimizing how/when their system files would run (Which Windows installation over 2+ years with limited resources require). It's about what they face if they choose either of these two platforms. To them, what goes behind the curtain of Streaming servers, is a black box.

In that case most of Xbox = Windows. Android uses heavily modified Linux Kernel. But that's all it uses. No GNU libraries, no x server which means you can't run standard Linux UI apps in Android. We are only comparing desktop OS here.

Hey Alienizer! don't know if you'll read this. Linux gamer here. I haven't used Windows since I stopped using Windows 7. Funny video! I just want to make a correction. 4:20 Wine Is Not an Emulator (That's actually what it literally stands for). Wine and Proton are compatibility layers that translate DirectX API's to Linux Compatible API's, usually Vulkan API. Linux gaming has come an exceptionally long way, and now with the Steam Deck out its nearing parity with Windows in game compatibility! Linux now performs many AAA Windows Native games _better_ than Windows itself. I would love to see a redo of this video when Steam OS comes out for the Desktop. Of course Linux Compatibility has dramatically expanded across the board for all distributions due to the success of the Steam Deck.
