This film has been one of my favorites since July 1986 when we saw it opening day . This disk is the best that it has ever looked. I was blown away by the work that they put into this film. It looks like a brand new movie.

Got my 4k version yesterday 😁 I have purchased Aliens in every format since launch. This version is truly exceptional, not only is it a total masterpiece by the most successful director in the world period, but this transfer has actually made it much better! The clarity, sharpness, lighting, colours and depth to the scenes is astonishing. Its almost 3D without the glasses. You see so much more detail in this version. On top of that, the audio is truly stunning, especially on that centre channel, you don't miss anything. It's that sort of film you now put on to show off your cinema set up. I think all the first 4 Alien films are great, from there on it crashed and burned. Now this will upset a few, but my preference is A2, A3, A1, and then A4. All have amazing sets, very talented actors throughout, only the storyline splits them for me.

Aliens looked low budget and gritty at the cinema in 86, just like The Terminator. The special effects in Aliens were also a bit shoddy but have been cleaned up since. I do like Aliens but the 4K is absolutely atrocious on a calibrated screen.

Yeah, looks good to me. I don't mind a little grain, but I'm not as enamored with it as some. I think grain is one of those things that a kid today sees and thinks, "That's got to be an old movie," and in 20 or 30 years there will be very few people still around to complain that modern movies don't look like real film. I mean, there is going too far, in my opinion, and I don't like it when a movie reminds me of a modern TV commercial, but I'm okay with the new Aliens. The people who really like their grain can stick with the Blu-rays. I've got the old boxset and I still think those look good, too.

Agreed. Alien³ is underrated, especially with the great Assembly Cut. Hopefully they'll clean up all the bad CGI and rush-job puppet effects but ain't holding my breath.

Sorry, but both versions of Alien 3 are a big waste of time. They destroy all three main characters in Aliens. They replace Newt and Hicks with the most unlikable characters imaginable. Heck, some of them even try to assault Ripley. And we're supposed to care if they live or die? No f**king way. And in the same movie, Ripley spreads eagle for the first ex-con she sees. WTF? And they showed absolutely no originality by making an Alien born from an ox.

@@LukeLovesRose Personally, I didn’t think any characters from Aliens (Other than Ripley) had that much depth to them anyways, so it didn’t upset me that they were killed off. It’s a part of the brutal, mean-spirited nature of the movie, which I like because it’s a very unconventional & non-commercial approach for a high budget blockbuster film. Also, you’re not supposed to like the inmates, they’re not a “replacement” for Newt & Hicks. They’re scary & a threat to her safety. The Xenomorph coming out of the Ox & becoming more animalistic as opposed to human is very creative imo & different from the other movies so I don’t understand how thats “unoriginal”. Also, I don’t see the problem with Ripley finding a romantic interest. They very unexpectedly kill him off which makes the stakes higher. It’s fine that you don’t like the movie, but I personally love it.

@@Aidan-oj1lx Are you kidding? Almost every principle character in Aliens has a character arc. Vasquez forgives Gorman, Hicks becomes more aggressive and outspoken, Hudson actually mans up. Ive actually grown to care about them all after all of the times ive seen the movie. Their lines have become just as important to me than anything else in the film. Thats because of James Camerons expect craftsmanship with 3D cinematography. The characters in Alien 3 are the worst in the entire franchise.

Of the recent three, I would say Aliens is the best 4K. A close second would be the Abyss on 4K. Then True Lies on 4K is a distant third. I really thought Aliens on 4K was a “reference quality” release.

@@thomaslytle5519 I'm one of the defenders of James Cameron's restorations of The Abyss and Aliens but Ken is right, that the restoration of Alien is better. The main difference is for me, is that I watched Alien about 6 months prior to this, not the night before. Seeing the Alien 4k restoration, made Ken the least satisfied with the 4k restoration technique that was used. The Aliens 4k looks awesome but you can see how it could look a little better, when you see other 4k restorations like Alien and Carrie that have more grain, but not too much grain.

You hit the nail on the head. I almost dont want too much clarity in a movie like this (or the original Alien). It takes you out of it if its too clean. Filmic, gritty is sorta how i want these movies to look

I know what you mean. It depends on the movie. Grain has its place and suits some films more than others, but I feel like the "supposed to" mindset moreso comes from a place of familiarity. Some older films are only as grainy as they are because the filmmaker was limited in what filmstock they had to choose from, not because they were making some artistic choice to dial the grain up to 11. I'd argue that Terminator 1 benefits even more from having a gritty presentation, which is why I love the bluray as is atm... but a more pristine 4K version that looks great would simply be a different viewing experience. I'd keep both, since which I watch would come down to what vibe I'm in the mood for

I think the Aliens Blu-ray is just about perfect. Still retains that grain, but the cleanup work on it compared to the DVD was incredible. The UHD is just too digital and artificial looking for my taste. And totally agree, the Alien UHD is absolutely perfect. Still one of my favorites.

Wait for a sale to get Aliens 4k but don't think it's not worth getting because it doesn't equal the 4k restoration of Alien. Very few movies do. The 4k of Aliens is an upgrade when compared to the bluray. It has way more detail and most low light scenes are easier to see.

Alien resurrection is the real alien horror for me out of them all. I really love the scary aspect of an alien spitting out acid, and that’s the first time we see one doing that. It’s claustrophobic, no other alien movie beats the underwater scene. It’s real disgusting, I really love the design of the alien, probably the best one yet, very slimy, very dark and shiny, it really looks like an alien you wish you’d never met. Plus it’s the only movie that combines the horror aspect with the action so perfectly! The first alien movie had only horror, the second aliens had mostly action, but this one has everything. The aliens in this one are way too smart, it makes them even scarier when they outsmart you. The humanoid at the end just freaking scary, nothing like it! we get to see an alien queen as well, the music is the best and the scariest alien music this far! Every track sounds like a marching song. Ripley here finally has her theme song. Jean Pierre and Joss Whedon they’re both clearly extremely talented. Edit: even if they cloned Ellen, the idea of it… is just too freaky! Presumably she wasn’t to be cloned and still lived after the third one, this film would make for a great piece of art!

I watched Alien first. It was an amazing. Regarding Aliens, I was equally amazing with the 4k I keep noticing new items due to the transfer. Also Aliens, has great characters for the story. The extended version was amazing.

I hated the artwork for Abyss and Aliens. I will be printing my own covers for them. Also hated that they stacked two discs on same hub instead of using a 3-disc case.

Am very glad you’ve been reunited with the film after many years and realise what you’ve been missing in your life! Of the 4 classic Alien films, I consider them all to have merit in their own right. The original Alien still rates as one of the most gripping horror movies to my eye. Even though I’ve seen it many times and know what is about to happen … I still find myself totally gripped in the event. I consider it to be incredibly immersive and quite claustrophobic in the way it pulls you in. Aliens is a very different movie and is a great romp … always things going on with multiple parallel bits of story line. It is, by far, the most entertaining and hits the right tone to be a true blockbuster. A rollercoaster to feel strapped into. Alien 3 has a very different feel again. Admittedly it’s probably the weakest and is certainly the worst looking …. Indeed the cheapest looking. It almost looks like it was filmed in 16mm with date expired film stock. However, it does still work in its own right. Its biggest problem is that it lacks the skill and tension of the first and the shear punch of Aliens. Resurrection is a mixed bag, but I love the style and design …the hallmarks of Jeunet. Although elements of the plot line do stretch things at times, it progresses nicely tongue in cheek. To me, the larger than life characters still make it an entertaining watch. The beauty of this set of 4 films is that they all fit together from a plot wise perspective, yet all stand on their own merits …. Very unlike the tedious and uninspired repetitive nature of the various superhero franchises we are drowning in today. I have always considered the weakest episodes in the franchise to be associated with the AVP spinoffs. A shame, as I am also a fan of the standalone Predator franchise. I know it’s controversial, but I thought the reboot with Prometheus was inspired. I have yet to see Covenant.

My only issue with Aliens was the audio track was not fixed. At first I thought it was the 4K. But after putting in the old bluray of Aliens (from the Quadrilogy set) and it had a DTS 5.1 track, I experienced the same audio issues with it. So that tells me it was issue with original audio track and they did nothing to fix. It was minor issues and still sounded great...but not perfect.

"Aliens" is one of my all-time favorite movies. I have watch this movie a zillion times......and I have to say the 4K looks and sounds amazing!!! Agree with you that some scenes looks like it's on a set (thought the same thing with the outside scene you mentioned in your review). But it didn't really bother me that much and so glad I finally got it!!! It was delayed on Amazon (like your Ken) but so worth the wait!!! The only thing I did not like was the damn sticker disney put on the slip cover. But I managed to get the sticker off with no damage to the slip cover. I also received the "Abyss" which I have never seen, but heard great things about it. It is the next James Cameron movie I am checking out. Thank you (as always) for your review Ken!!!

Aliens was never going to look like Alien. Different cinematography from different directors with different visions using significantly different cameras and lenses. The use of 35mm film was about all they had in common.

Abyss is definitely watchable but still has some uncanny valley smoothness applied unfortunately. will stick with the Aliens bluray (that still has some grain) in the beautiful Anthology set and the D-theater rip of True Lies and will switch to the 4K of Abyss from here on out. one day (not anytime soon) we'll get some nice non-revisionist transfers of his films with their grain intact.

Aliens has always been a huge favorite of mine over the years. I saw it in the theater back in 1986 and loved it ever since. For me, Aliens is number 2 in the lineup, behind The Abyss and then True Lies. Love all of them. You know already that Cameron is going to tinker with The Terminator. Interesting. Agree with you about both films having a "slow burn." I actually prefer the slow burn of the original film. I remember one of the reviews of the original book of Stephen King's The Shining. The review says that the movie is genuinely scary, and the scares "don't leap out at you, they creep up from behind." I loved that and love horror movies that do that, don't go for cheap jump scares but set the scene, let the tension and anticipation rise and then starts to give you the scare....here. And then turns around and gives it to you HERE! Like the best of Hitchcock and DePalma. Cameron does that some too, with the arrival of the Marines, the empty base, the platoon moving into the area under the reactor cooling section and then blowing your door off. Like you, I love both films. And, I agree that the original film transfer is better than the Aliens transfer, but I also love the Aliens transfer. I love being able to see what's going on, even in the dark sections of the film. Cleaned up? Yes, but most of those closeups are here and gone so quickly I don't notice anything with them other than I can see them better. That may be because I'm getting older and the cleaner version is easier for me. I understand your desire to have that filmic experience like in the theater, though, and applaud your desire to kind of replicate that experience of seeing the movie in the movie house itself (which I think is what you are going for, but I may have misunderstood) Thanks for the review. I still need to watch them back to back like you did. But that will come soon.

I think Jonesy was a spy for the Weyland-Yutani corporation. It was therefore they knew what was going on on Sulaco. It couldn't have been Ash,since he was demolished sooner in the movie. Perhaps did Jonesy have some kind of camera in his eyes,that sent information back to Weyland-Yutani? The same on the spacestation? But was there a competive corporation involved ? It opens up for many scenarios ??

Aliens was always grainy. I’ve owned it on every format including the first time the extended edition was released exclusively on laserdisc. It was great but very grainy. I’m happy to see it look the way it does on 4K. It’s the best it’s ever looked. I realize some work was needed for 4K. If they had not done what they did, the complaints would have been about the grain and how bad it looked and that they should have done a better job on the transfer. It’s as good as it can look.

I just watched this yesterday in 4K and I thought it was great. A few of the scenes looked a bit too scrubed, but overall there was so many great looking moments here. The clarity and micro details on close ups were really good. I saw True Lies as well and it had more over scrubbed scenes but also some nice shots. Havent scene Abyss. Probably ill only buy Aliens for the collection.

Umm, James Cameron did do a new 30 min. interview on the bonus disc, it's at the very top of the special features menu. He did new interviews for all three 4K releases. Also, yes, the Anthology blu ray set did have all the documentaries from the old Quadrilogy set including the full, extended Alien 3 doc.

Im not sure if it just my copy but the scene with Jonesy in the dream sequence is kinda of jittery when he runs off and hides. I replayed it over and over again and it was slightly jittery every time.

I've noticed all that when I saw it in theaters at it's release. Miniatures models, super imposed foreground and background, rubber suits and movie sets. It's not inherently from a 4K restoration.

Based on technical analyze others did it looks like they didn't go back to the camera negative for this and instead used the 2K scan for the BLURAY and overprocessed it and it's not bad but I would call it a mixed bag! I agree Alien looks way better and they definitely went back to the camera negative for that movie!

I love this movie so much,but I remember way back in 86 I bunked off work to go and watch it, and was seen coming out of the Cinema! Is it better than Alien? I'm always undecided on that.

Ummmmm…….no! I played both back to back, pausing specific scenes and the detail on the 4K UHD blows the blu ray away!!! Check out the soldiers name badges that you can now read!! Very sharp!

I 100% agree with some of the other user comments here that the 4k UHD "Aliens" movie is the best looking of James Cameron's 3 new 4k releases which I own & have watched. I also own the Alien Anthology Blu-ray set & the new 4k Aliens release is far superior to the Blu-ray too. 👍

As someone who has seen this in the theater in 1986 and every format since, I Completely disagree with this review. I watched my copy last night and this is a huge upgrade over any other prior releases and the best it’s ever looked to me. Definitely the most I’ve ever enjoyed it. Like seeing it for the first time. I remember that Aliens Always looked slightly less “real” than the first, even in the theater! The look of films varied greatly between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) especially with 2 different directors. James did a great job of keeping the same feel but stepping up the action. Aliens is nowhere Near as slow burn as Alien. Other KZbinrs have already squashed the undeserved complaints. Aliens wasn’t “smoothed over”. It’s just a very fine grain but it’s there. There’s actually a detailed explanation video out there about it. Stunning detail. Along with the stellar Atmos track, this is the best I’ve ever seen or heard it. Hands down. With all the crap transfers being released lately (lookin at you Exorcist etc., Etc.) this one should be celebrated. True Lies is Awful. Arnold looks like a wax figure. While I can see every pore, every hair on the actors faces in Aliens. Nah, I have to call bs. This deserves a Much better review, as some other KZbinrs have already done. I’m sure if True Lies was released later, this one would not be getting half these complaints

If you watch Alien3, watch the “assembly cut”. It is a much better version than the theatrical version.

I think part of the reason that the difference is so shocking is Cameron shot Aliens on Super 35 so there is more inherent grain that we have grown accustomed to and the smoothing out just looks wrong. In one of the commentaries he said he regretted that and wished he shot it 2.35:1 to match Alien.

Yes Alien and Aliens are the best and always will be the best in this franchise. To me, Aliens is Cameron's best film ever but I will probably just stick with the BDs.

It was a little more scrubbed than I would have liked. With that said, I only ever owned it on DVD. It looks a lot better than the dvd does. I hope Sony releases 3 and resurrection when they release alien romulus. They're not as good as the first two , but it would still be cold to have them on 4K
