I love how in the face of death, Hudson immediately screams for Hicks, who rushes to help him. It's a huge moment in this epic movie that illustrates how these people are like family to each other. Hudson may have acted like the arrogant little brother in the Marines gang, but they truly cared about each other. The fact that Bill Paxton & Michael Biehn improvised it highlights their brotherhood bond, on/off screen.

The reason why the squad put up with Hudson’s shit is because he was actually the squads second most competent soldier behind Hicks. Aliens, RoboCop, Terminator, and Predator. These movies have the re-watchable factor. Watched them as a kid in the 1980's and still watch them as an adult today. Gotta love 1980's Sci-Fi movies. And what are most sci-fi movies missing today? Good musical scores, practical effects, miniatures, clever camera editing, lighting, good acting, and no ulterior woke motive. Now all sci-fi movies looks so clean, vibrant, and new. They definitely need to bring back the dirty, dingy camera work of the cinematography of the 1980's.

@mr.b892 жыл бұрын
I mean there are still amazing science fiction films being made pretty regularly. The void, blade runner 2049, her, everything done by neill blomkamp (he pretty much uses exactly this of this kind of gritty cinematography), arrival, fury road, edge of tomorrow, high life, ex machina, annihilation.... but however good these are you'd definitely be hard pressed to find environment and creature design as insane as those of alien. Part of this is that these qualities were actually incredible for the time and still look amazing today, and also the designs of giger themselves which is difficult to reference/homage without seeming derivative. It's a pretty specific horror he was going for with all the sexual imagery with the eggs, chestbursters, engineer architecture design etc. Don't know what you're getting at with the ulterior woke motive stuff though, even these 80s movies had a LOT of stuff to say politically, especially robocop lol. Not so much with predator but it's pretty obvious that terminator, aliens, and robocop criticize aspects of reagan's neoliberal capitalism by taking it to its logical endpoint with various sci fi twists. Surveillance states and unsafe mechanized soldiers/police that are created to increase an uber rich company's profit margin? That's terminator and robocop for ya. Robocop's even got some pro union/strike commentary in there which would've been subversive given the anti-union rhetoric of the reagan admin. Alien and aliens deal more with worker expendability/exploitation, as we have a blue collar starship being used as a testing ground for weyland-yutani's alien studies, something they saw as highly profitable. Sure, politics aren't necessary for a good film, but it sure makes them interesting and relevant, given the whole history repeating itself thing
@K4R3N2 жыл бұрын
Agree, just cgi and one-liners. Matrix 1 was probably the last classic
@watts18269 Жыл бұрын
@@mr.b89 robocop was satirical, not pandering. Verhoeven’s criticism was primarily of the military industrial complex amongst others. Also don’t remember any forced diversity, inclusion quotas or gender politics in any of those movies. Any ‘wokeness’ was organic, already written into the characters and script and wasn’t decided by some activist later on to try to appeal to more people. Which of course is what the OP was clearly alluding to.

I absolutely love the reactions - Hicks is the most stable, down-to-earth guy who functions well under pressure when everyone is nervous, yet when he sees the aliens that close he doesn't communicate and continue with his usual cool temper but SCREAMS IN PANIC and lights up the roof, full-auto, without saying a word to the others. Bits and pieces like these bring depth to the movie and characters and are the reason why even today you see day-old comments on videos like these, as people come back to get a taste of the scene itself!

And then you have Hudson, with the complete opposite reaction- running his mouth about what a badass he is, bitching when things don’t go according to plan, but when the chips are down and shit is the most dire it’s been, he’s got his sectors locked down…and he’s still running his mouth, only it’s no longer boasting. He’s actively taunting and goading the enemy, defiant to the very last “Fuck you”. Absolutely superb writing and excellent characterization from the actors who were given these roles.

This movie has an incredible way of coming full circle story and character wise. I noticed how the characters' deaths complete their arcs. Hudson was scared throughout Aliens but dies standing his ground against what he was afraid of. Vasquez can't stand Gorman and he's depicted as being a wimp, yet he's the one who goes back to save her and dies a hero's death. Then Burke's whole agenda is wanting to capture a xenomorph and he gets killed by them.

To add to the Burke arc: he was always shown to be sympathetic to Ripley and had her back through the first portion of the film, especially with the edgier Marines. I think they would've ruined it. Take a look at the documentary about how this awesome movie was filmed, step by step. Most scenes in it were extremely complex and the actors as well as the background crew had to put so much effort night in and night out to fit all the pieces into the whole and get the action rolling. I think that's what made this film such a masterpiece, something a sophisticated computer animation of today cannot replicate.

Subsequently, Colonial Marines have been completely out of the picture since the 80's. Coicindence? I think not. I wish they went with the District 9 director, or just dumped a truck load of money at James Cameron's house. Either one would better than Scott. I like Ridely Scott but he has got such a hit or miss ressume at this point. Also Prometheus and Covanent are both psuedo-intelectual, self-aggrandizing dog shit films. They ask a bunch of questions EVERYONE has already asked before and don't actually contribute anything new to the themes or discussion. In short you can pretty much go to a reddit shit posting blog and get the same experiance as watching Prometheus or Covanant. I think Niel Blomkamp would be the best man to handle this franchise.

By far one of the best sci-fi, horror-action movies made. Cameron and his crew were geniuses and way beyond their time. I saw this in the movie theater and this scene along with the marines battling the aliens in the first scene, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Talk about a roller coaster ride from hell. This movie was so adrenaline basedI remember leaving the theater feeling stressed out, exhausted, and my stomach in knots. I have never seen such an exciting movie such as this. I am so fortunate to be in the 80’s where so many great directors made their marks with brilliant craftsmanship in movies. This scene alone, along with the music, the non stop creatures coming from all directions while what’s left of the marines are still fending them off. Velasquez was one foxy bad-ass-bitch as she really was the first along with Sigourney Weaver to showcase women that could handle themselves in action sequences. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up for both this scene and movie.

A lot of people keep saying Hudson 'regained his courage' or 'overcame his fear', but there's a big difference between being 'fearful' vs accepting what you believe is inevitable. Hudson did a lot of paranoid whining and "we're done for", but that's not the same as fear. Either way, he stepped up to the plate and went out in a glorious blaze of rageful Alien destruction, killing five Xenos in bloodlust. Hicks keeps shouting at him to back off, but Hudson was so tunnel-vision that he barely complied - too busy being a beast.
@damelon76675 жыл бұрын
Such a masterpiece.. what can you say that hasn't been said? Just look at their faces! You can feel their fear and adrenaline! The sets, sounds, and lighting were so perfect in this movie. None of the modern "CGI Fest" movies they are making can come close to the raw beauty film used to create.

Ended up forgetting about the movie. 35 years later, yesterday I suddenly remembered and watched it. I tried to watch many old movies before and I often felt disapointed. This movie Aliens, and its actors... got me pausing several times , tears in my eyes.. at how genuinely and absolutely fantastic it was.
