When two Deaf people walk together they center their vision in front of their partner, between and seeing the path ahead and their partner. They can't see off to their side away from their partner, but their partner can and the two of them use body language and Sign Language to communicate if there is anything they should know about. It's a neat story.

The face of the alien at 8:55 when it realises farts have sounds
@jesslauren80313 ай бұрын
Considering that most animal life on earth rely on the sense of sound, some that even evolved to the point were it is the primarily used sense, it’s an interesting thought on how creatures who evolved without it carry out their lives.

Hearing is basically advanced vibration sensing which itself is advanced touch, so evolving down that path, ears will probably come up eventually unless there's some environmental condition that disadvantages ears from being evolved

Strange not having tremor/vibration sensors, even fish have ears. It's POSSIBLE that they don't speak with sound, but everything has ways to detect vibration. It's part of touch.

Hearing works differently from touch and it's definitely interpreted in a unique way. It's not impossible to imagine some alien evolving basic sense of where the sound comes from without the ability to process it any further

Just because every animal on earth has hearing it doesn't mean it needs to evolve in another biosphere ( but it probably will because it's useful). I think the story it's just a nice thought experiment about how different an extraterrestrial species could be. Maybe they can feel vibrations but can't actually hear. Like we can feel heat but we don't have an organ dedicated to see infrared. Imagine an alien saying "every (alien) animal can see infrared, your story with the blind humans is dumb"

Actually humans do have a magnetic field. The thing is that it is completely internal and not available for voluntary control, like with certain eels. However, we do use it subconsciously in more ways than most people realize. This helps with directional manipulation, interpersonal relationships, along with much more than most people realize.

Some birds can see far more colors than you. Dogs have limited vision. Sharks can detect magnetic fields and electronic cables on the ocean floor. There are many creatures in this realm. The environment plays a role in what gifts some are granted, but there will always be some that find themselves to be a rare or unique gift.

Rant: I don't like it when a story labels itself HFY when the "human" characteristic they want to highlight is a feature found on almost every earth mammal. Gasp, these human creatures *make body heat*! Shock and horror, the humans have *bacteria living in and on them*! By the Queens, no one told me humans have *internal skeletons*! Spare us! These human monsters *exhale carbon dioxide*! Like, I get it. Stories about our tolerance to various chemicals, supposed history of persistence hunting, and extreme cultural diversity have been written ad nauseum. But the other biological examples aren't anything to highlight humanity specifically. It gets me even more when an "HFY" story is just an "Earth is a Deathworld" story. That one where the jellyfish aliens that drift in the void of space and exist in super sub-zero temperatures are horrified by liquid water bothers me a lot. Our species doesn't have to be some xenobiological anomaly and it's okay if your HFY stories are about clichéd abstract traits like determination or creativity, but an HFY story should highlight what makes humanity special
@tarrantwolf3 ай бұрын
We know as a fact sapiens used persistence hunting, how is that "supposed?"
@anikiikardia82793 ай бұрын
@@tarrantwolf Sorry, poor wording on my part. Wanted to mention persistence hunting due to it's ubiquity in HFY, but didn't want to perpetuate it as the one-and-only. Just saying "our history of persistence hunting" by itself kinda neglects the later trap and weapon strategies for hunting that would become much more common towards the neolithic revolution.
