Working in IT myself. i've heard customers complaining about their printer stopped working after a tech fixed a microsoft outlook email issue on their computer, saying "it was working before you touched it!" customers can be very stupid and aggravating

I recently repaired a switch’s controller rail that the customers kid ripped off. After the repair (Next day)she comes back with it ripped it off again. Said I did a Shoddy job, which I did not. Through interrogation tactics, she admitted that her kid was jumping on the bed with the switch and ripped it off again. Figured so. 🤦🤷

I used todo a lot of virus removal on peoples computers. The bulk of them were from people going to dodgy porn sites. This was back in 2010. One person came back with a computer the next day saying that I did not get rid of the virus. I checked browser history and time stamps on virus files and they took the computer home and went back to the dodgy website as soon as they went home trying to find what ever sick sh*t they were looking for last time .

Usually when I visit repair shops I can sometimes see how tired their eyes are. I guess, from your perspective, it's the constant interactions with obnoxious customers or just dealing with relatively more people in general.

They only mail the motherboard because the package will be lighter -> Less shipping costs. However, they usually don't think twice about that no testing means less chance of it actually working which in turn would mean another repair attempt -> More money wasted.

There is a 50% chance that the CPU is also dead on this one. Especially with Alienware which has strong 19V power supply that would spike the CPU nicely with full power and then go into overload.

The customer has now complained that the fault has reoccurred, the button is broken again. He sent a copy of the invoice and asked for rectification. Then he sent me a tablet with a discharged battery....

@@SiETechNotebookReparatur I often get customers that bring stuff that was supposedly serviced by us before, while there is absolutely no entry in our database but they are sooo convinced about it, usually, it turns out that either they serviced it somewhere other place or had a totally different computer repaired with us. The last time I had a lady complaining that her browser doesn't work after we fixed it a month ago, I asked her to come and she brought a completely different laptop and began to raise her voice that it was that laptop that was repaired... some people can't chew gum and walk at the same time I guess.

It appears as though CPU mosftet 2 was replaced with the exact same damaged mosfet on the first attempt. It had the same markings if you rewind the video and compare.

in this video you ask how to detect short when mosfets are still attached. this seems very challenging but perhaps with a precision instrument like a very sensitive multimeter? is that possible? for example if you started by removing 2 of the mosfet in the middle. then the remaining ones at either end of the line will be further away from each other. which can increase slightly the resistance from one end of the pcb to the other end. but you might need a pretty expensive multimeter (and for a lower power device with less heavy thick pcb traces) but another more sophisticated method would be to use an electric field meter. to detect where the current flow on the pcb was higher. this would occur near to the location of the shorted path. so long as you can flow enough current to be able to detect the presence of a strong enough electric field. again - i am not sure if the equipment can be sensitive enough to detect in these situations. it is challenging

I think for most people watching here there is a general understanding of electronics repair at the least. Most customers of an electronics repair shop will have little to no idea what is involved in a repair. If someone believes that a screen repair can turn a metal case "soft" you better believe they have little to no idea. The customer may have been obviously wrong to this audience but I bet you could find large groups of people that would believe softening metal could be possible. If you have no idea what solder is and then the first thing you learn about electronics repair is that metal is melted to fix broken stuff then it isn't a huge leap to getting it arse backwards and believing people have weakened your case by doing a repair. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!

I feel your pain. People get the craziest ideas. MY #1 was a older German woman saying her printer got infected with a virus from her computer (this was 2002), the virus was our fault.

Those were the good old days where people got confused by the word virus. They would clean the computer and the rooms that they set computers were cleaned and dust free. 😁 Now, it's a mini treasure hunt when you open a customer's desktop PCs. Pens, old 2gb pendrives, old unpacked candies, broken SD cards, spiders, dead lizards, roaches etc.

Dealing with that iPad customer is the reason why I don't do repair for people. I once helped my friend's mom with her computer by replacing her CD-ROM drive. She then called me every time her cable modem went out and blamed the issue on me for fixing the CD-ROM. In her eyes, all computer issues are lumped together even though the issues are completely unrelated. I don't have the patience for it and there are some people who will never understand.

Always take photos of pre-work start, and if someone is turning something in directly. Always inspect and point noticeable damage. Have the customer accept the pre-existing damage before accepting turn in.

It is a shame Alienware laptops can be nightmares with really odd failures that their business class machines very rarely experience then there is the parts issue especially for the older models like the M18x R2 for example.

I believe that OEMs haven't designed the heat management systems in these 'gaming laptops'. Why are we having all of these failures, if they did? Or maybe it's people using that high-powered heat bomb in the laps or on the bed? I don't know, but it just seems weird to me, that this isn't recallable. How many companies machines does Alex fix? All of them that make these machines, that's how many. Practically industry-wide to me, but correct me if I'm wrong. Helps to re-align my thinking. 👍

Is it safe to say that most of these laptops die due to thermal issues? Seems like they sacrifice cooling performance so they can reduce weight and laptop size. Have you ever seen a mosfet fail on a regular PC motherboard when they have a huge heat sink on them and airflow from fans? I haven't. Especially modern motherboard ones they usually top out around 65-75C under max load because they are better cooled and there's a lot more of them so the load is more evenly spread.

The problem is even more complex, customers want quiet appliances, so cooling is often poor, but quiet.

From my experience: All laptops that died on me, died due to overheating. So yes. Cooling is probably the main issue. While laptops nowadays achieve quite good cooling on GPU und CPU, there's little to no airflow inside the case and every other component overheats on longer sessions. Especially when gaming. After killing my 3rd laptop with a dedicated GPU while doing heavy work on it, I settled for a laptop with an iGPU. Has been going strong for 5 years now. People think I look out for lower TDP because of battery life, but for me it's now gotten kind of a precaution, because lower tdp = lower heat... I won't buy a high tdp laptop ever again, due to cooling.

Yup, thermal cycling is the number 1 killer, especially in the "gaming" category. They get crap in the cooling system quicker as they eat through vast amounts of air compared to more typical laptops.

I just got a laptop from a customer to install an external capture card. Customer didn't bother to tell me the Windows password. Obviously I will return the laptop to the customer saying that I really am not able to install anything on his laptop because I am really stupid. I’ve had a couple consoles where they’ve ripped the HDMI ports off again expecting a warranty job. Not a chance my soldering on HDMI ports is solid, I never snap any off any of my devices or the consoles when I test them several times. Repairing controllers is my worst hate, I get so many sent back where they’ve been abused and broken again and they go crazy on the repair price. Then I get blamed for botching on the previous repair, it’s like come on. Some people just are not right and never blame themselves, decide what’s viable for you.

Yeah some customers say pretty stupid stuff when they know they are gonna loose some money again because of accident or miss handling. Bending of the housing indeed has nothing to do with the glass. We had a customer who constantly broke USB-C port of a Lenovo M10 tablet and she continued to claim that the tablet was bad and after 2 warranty claims and 2 times we our selves swapped the USB-C port, she wanted her money back when the port broke 5th time. Of course we didn't agree because we now have a broken device and we have serviced it basically for free besides the warranty claims which the manufacturer replaces necessary parts. We have sold quite a few of these tablets and rarely had issues and most certainly not the same issue multiple times with the same device. When it comes down to USB-C you rarely see the port being bad quality, instead it is most of the ripped from the bad quality PCB. If you see ports where the housing is starting to spread open that's when you know customers has yanked the cable sideways or forced it in from an angle. She is not our customer anymore not due to us selling (in her mind) bad products but because of "bad customer service". I have heard similar stories when someone bought a car and had clutch issues and of course there was no possible way for him/her to be the problem :D

If you get a hot CPU when voltage injection, can it ever be another shorted component sending current to CPU and to ground making it seem like the CPU is shorted? Thanks. Love your videos. Best on youtube

That's actually exactly what happened in this video. But the component is not what is sending the current. Since the component is shorted, the current is just passing right through it, and it's not "checked." If you're familiar with coding or even using Excel, the purpose of MOSFETs are to act as an IF statement.

@@TheResoluteHawk That's not what he asked. To answer the question - yes. If for instance there is part of logic that got messed up badly (usually from liquid damage), the IO controller often gets the whole shaft (South Bridge) and will get the internal silicon structure shorted out, I see this often. You may not have a short on the main power rail, but it might bring down accessory rails like 3.3V, very common. Usually, I deem those as no fix and replace the board. Not worth the cost and effort to replace the BGA CPU.

Maybe the customer was disconnecting piece by piece until the power supply quit blowing the overload circuit. By then it was down to just the motherboard and the repair was beyond what the customer had the experience and/or tools to fix. So..... why would the customers put all that back together and pay extra shipping and insurance when that customer was under the impression you could fix just the motherboard without the rest.

I noticed something. Instead solder Mosfet 1 you put Mosfet 2 on his place. How i know? On Mosfet 2 between letters "DC" and "T6" is a little mark looking like X and on the right side (next to "T642") is a little mark look like "V" . You didnt put flux on first one and put flux only on the second one. So when you solder back the MOSFET he was in flux already. If that was 1-st one there should not be any flux on it. ;)

yes... im not the only one. i also noticed that, not from x and v mark, but from the shapes of discolorations.

@@gokhanfidan8254 In fact i made same mistakes when am distracted by something. So is not fatal i think and we are humans in the 1-st place. Anyway he had to replace both Mosfets. Nothing weird.

Sometimes the part numbers are written differently in the schematics, sometimes you can find different ordering part numbers in the actual datasheet. Mostly donor boards though.

I was laughing to myself about that iPad. Totally unrelated but I've fixed boilers for people and then they've rang me because their garden tap has "only started dripping" since I fixed their boiler. Or the lightbulb has blown in the bedroom, or etc etc etc. 😂 "The job would be ok without customers"

These chips are actually not MOSFETs, but ICs (which contain MOSFETSs)
