When Dell allows you to take apart their latest $$$$$ gadget "live", on camera... It kind of shows what a great reputation you built not only in the eyes of the manufacturers, but also in the eyes of the customers. They don't mind the "inconvenience" as they know they will get a fair opinion that the customers will take seriously. Well done Linus! Honestly.
@fishywtf
@fishywtf 5 жыл бұрын
No, it tells that Dell is confident in their unique device and show you that it's actually different. It's marketing, it's not about reputation with Linus.

@@fishywtf yes it's marketing and yes dell is confident about it, but can you show me any other youtubers allowed to do this much extensive search on their laptop in CES 2019. Do you know why? Because he got the reputation of 7.9 million subscribers. Don't be so stupid 😏

He did not start that way though, he started as a tiny channel doing almost exclusively unboxings of pc components (with a concentration on gaming oriented hardware) using the stock he had on hand at the tech retailer he was working for at the time. He built this channel from the ground up and eventually hired more and more staff as he grew the company. The quality of the content has just gone up and up over time. He is an advocate of the "socks with sandles life" and has a cult following on KZbin with alot of us having watched him from the beginning and still enjoying his content, some 8+ years later! Lots of love for everyone at LTT and my Boi Luke now over at Float-Plane!

Or, the ones where the driver gives the cops permission to search, and the cops physically destroy the seats, dash, carpet, etc. while looking for contraband, and when the driver protests, the cops just tell him "You gave us permission."

Doesn't everything become outdated within a year? Buying a computer is almost not even a worthwhile investment anymore they become useless so fast. If computers start advancing too quickly, people will quit buying because whatever they buy now will become outdated far too quickly. The computer development industry will probably crash, and computers will stop advancing for the forseeable future. At the very least, the progression may slow down as fewer people are involved in it.

This is actually great. should this become a thing (as it failed to become an actual thing before), if dell sells the barebone laptop without processor and gpu, and they manufacture at least xx60, xx70, xx80 gpus, this will be a trend, soon laptop manufacturers will actually compete with the upgradeable laptop market. I plan to build my rig this year, a generation older build. If this is promised to be released soon, ill hold my cash until this becomes available, im not an alienware fanatic but it should be worth the wait as an added option.

The problem with this is, that the engineering fees for creating such a "mobile desktop graphics card" is going to be pretty high, so they need to see a lot of them. But if this is for the true elite who buys xx80 or xx80ti GPUs and i9 CPUs then there's not going to be that big of a sale. So they need to implement this upgrade-ability for other laptops as well, maybe even hope that other OEMs also jump on this ship and they figure out some standard for the graphics card.

@pr0xZen
@pr0xZen 5 жыл бұрын
@@wobblysauce My personal experience, and from feedback from friends and family, is that the rigid glass protectors are easier to deal with if flat. The curved ones, not quite. Those few that has silicon adhesive on the entire protector anyway, those with only a thin strip around the outer edges are easier, but they're also pretty shaite in use. Alignment is always a challenge. On many models, even if the screen is "flat" it had a slight curve at the very end towards the bezels, so if you get it half a mm off, you get an air (->dust&grime)gap. One of the difficulties I've seen for novices with softer protectors, including myself, is time. To align it well, apply it while working out any small bubbles underway, it takes enough time that dust or fibre particles in the air reach the screen or protector. And we've all had poor success with the do-it-in-the-bathroom-after-running-the-shower technique. Some people seem just better adept at it, some get a lot of training. But nost people have only put on a few, or none at all (themselves). Adding to that, these brand-name protectors tend to be rather expensive, so you'll be wanting to get a satisfactory result on the first go if possible, not order a 3-pack. If this alignment arrangement can help this in a serious manner, it may very well be worth its premium for us mere screen protector muggles and mortals. Especially if they do full-cover for curved screens. And I'm kinds hoping this thing works out, dbrand has a good track record for precision. Lets see if that can transfer well to this kind of user application. TheStaniG Maybe - Janice might be a wizkid with smartphones, we don't know yet. I think(?)

Linus.... how short is your memory? Yes, we did have DTR laptops that were completely upgradable. Alienware sold them just a couple years ago! The entire m18X line. The former m17x line. The former m15x. The Alienware 17. ALL had upgradable CPUs, GPUs, Hard drives, etc. Not to mention the fact that Clevo, Sager, MSI, and Lenovo *ALL* currently sell laptops that are upgradable. Best part is, they all use MXM. They didn't feel the need to re-invent the wheel.

Problem with this is that the GPU module is proprietary and you're dependent on the vendor for any upgrades. MxM was better in that it was open. Mind you in practice you couldn't upgrade a notebook with an MxM module which had a higher power consumption than the one you were removing because the cooling solution wouldn't be able to deal with it. I suspect that if you want an upgradeable system you're probably stuck with a desktop. Which isn't as bad as it used to be - you could build an ITX system if you want it small or a full size one if you want cheap parts and lots of thermal headroom. Sure you're not going to carry it around in a rucksack but I think a lot of people can live with that if it means they can buy commodity hardware when they need to upgrade.
@danwat1234

Yea the new gen CPU (edit: GPU) has to exactly match the the location of the previous GPU die or manufacturer may have to develop a new heatsink for it.
@neurokinetik64ES
@neurokinetik64ES 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed about the GPU. A proprietary form factor can easily go away when the manufacturer deems it no longer profitable to make, which means you won't be able to upgrade anymore. In that respect, I kind of prefer the external GPU option, just give it enough PCI lanes so as not to lose performance over a desktop. Also, what are the odds that Intel actually releases a CPU after the 9900K that still uses the same socket?
@user-qf6yt3id3w
@user-qf6yt3id3w 5 жыл бұрын
@@neurokinetik64ES "Also, what are the odds that Intel actually releases a CPU after the 9900K that still uses the same socket?" Well for the last few generations they seem to have swapped sockets almost every generation, so the odds are not good. E.g. even though Coffee Lake used an LGA1151 socket like previous CPUs but you still needed a new motherboard. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1151#LGA_1151_revision_2 " While physical dimensions remain unchanged, the updated socket re-assigns some reserved pins, adding power and ground lines to support the requirements of 6-core and 8-core CPUs. The new socket also relocates the processor detection pin, breaking compatibility with earlier processors and motherboards. As a result, desktop Coffee Lake CPUs are officially not compatible with the 100 (original Skylake) and 200 (Kaby Lake) series chipsets.[32] Similarly, 300 series chipsets only support Coffee Lake and are not compatible with Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs." And IMO given that x86 per thread performance hasn't been increasing particularly fast if you're going to swap CPUs you might as well swap out the memory subsystem for the latest one too, which is going to require a new motherboard. Of course if you use AMD they're better about keeping chipsets compatible with new CPUs.
@neurokinetik64ES
@neurokinetik64ES 5 жыл бұрын
@@user-qf6yt3id3w That was more of rhetorical question. I figure the odds being "slim to none". So what you end up with here is the IDEA that the laptop will be upgradeable, but when it really comes down to it, there won't be any upgrades available.
