Hello Rob, I'm a year 12 VCE student looking to specialise in civil engineering and with VTAC applications being recently opened, I've found myself in a tough situation! I was certain I was going to choose Unimelb to take an engineering graduate degree package, but after reading about 2-3 people's experiences at Unimelb, I was left apathetic. Hence, my preferences have opened to either Unimelb, Monash or RMIT: Unimelb being prestigious, rigorous and theoretical in its curriculum but takes 5 years to become a fully accredited engineer, more likely to have like-minded colleagues and a 5-7 min walk away from where I live; RMIT being more hands-on, less prestigious and easier; and Monash being in between, having more industry connections, takes 4 years to become a fully accredited civil engineer, but 1 hour away excluding potential traffic delays. AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! sorry mood swing. Please give me your words of wisdom :))

I can see the conundrum! Not sure where you read the reviews but if it was on University Reviews I wouldn't pay too much notice - heaps of negativity on that site imo. You should make your choice based on the strengths that align with your interests and goals. UniMelb is a kick arse uni with a killer social life and top academic programs and reputation. If you start there, and discover it's not what you expected, you can always transfer to RMIT or Monash - you'd likely find a lot of first year credit should transfer. Honestly, 5 years vs 4 years is meaningless at your age. You've got plenty of time on your side. An extra year to me means a more rounded education, more time to get the most out of uni and more time to hone in on your specific interests. An extra year is not a negative. All three of these unis are great. You've only read about 2-3 experiences, not 200. If Melb is close and you like the looks of it, start there.

Hi Rob! I've got offer from University of Adelaide (Master of strategic communication) and University of Canberra (Master of communication with specialization in either marketing communication or startegic communication) so which one would u suggest and pls let me know why I'm super confused..PLS help me
@ChoosingYourUni8 ай бұрын
Hmmm, both good options imo. Hard to say which I'd recommend without knowing more about your goals and interests. UoA obviously Go8 so great reputation overall, and Adelaide is a lovely city - a bit bigger and more lively than Canberra, which is REALLY quiet on the weekends, but has a nice outdoor lifestyle. UC has a strong communications faculty, Adelaide the stronger business faculty imo. Overall, if I were choosing for myself and had no other restrictions in terms of money, goals etc, I'd pick UoA over UC. That said, UC has been storming ahead in recent years... but overall, still UoA for me. (But that's me, not you, of course!)

@ChoosingYourUni7 ай бұрын
Accounting is a fairly standardised program across the country because of the accreditation requirements. Overall, I'd probably go UQ, MQ, UoA, but that's also based on my personal preferences: I really love Brisbane as a student city atm, and UQ is just fantastic. MQ has an excellent business program and is in a thriving part of the city with lots of work/internship opportunities.

I am Surya, and I am confused about choosing a university for my master's in electrical engineering. I got an unconditional offer from Monash and RMIT, but I do not know which is better. RMIT has a wide range of subjects to choose from, while in Monash you can choose only one subject in the year on your own; the remaining 3 subjects are compulsory. Which university is best for me? I mainly seek industry-oriented knowledge for my future career. Both universities have their pluses. i really need clear advice and your experience, to make a decision, so please kindly help me here

Hello rob. Your video are very informative and fun to watch thank you for reviewing can you say that which is best city to live from Adelaide or Melbourne in compare to education and job markets
@ChoosingYourUni7 ай бұрын
Thanks! It's hard to say without knowing your specific interests. Melbourne is a much bigger city, meaning there are more businesses and work opportunities, but the cost of living is also higher. Some people find Adelaide "quiet", because it is much smaller, but I really love it. Both cities have excellent university options, so I'd really consider what kind of overall experience you're looking for.

I'll be starting university next year with a bachelor of engineering, and am struggling to decide between Monash, Swinburne, RMIT and Uni of Melbourne. I expect I'll achieve an ATAR of at least 80. Uni of Melbourne seems great overall, but I've heard that it's a little lacking in engineering and has poor industry connections in this area. (Assuming I can even get 88 on my ATAR) I've also heard that education in Swinburne and RMIT is much more practical/hands-on compared to Monash or Uni of Melbourne which are more theoretical. I suspect practical learning is better, but I'm not certain. Swinburne will be easily the most accessible, but the others aren't too far away by car. They all seem really good though, and I get great vibes from all of them. What are your thoughts?
@ChoosingYourUni3 ай бұрын
I've heard similar things about Swin/RMIT vs the group of 8 unis. I've also heard that the industry linkages Monash has are super strong (e.g. they're basically co-located with the CSIRO, so there's heaps of connections there alone). All those unis are accredited by Engineers Australia (www.engineersaustralia.org.au/sites/default/files/2024-07/engineers-australia-accredited-tertiary-programs-jul-24.pdf) so you'll get both theory and practical elements. Uni Melb doesn't offer an undergrad Bachelor of engineering anymore, you do a BSc and then a Masters, so that will take longer. Overall, the study side of uni is only part of it. Campus life, how easy it is to get there, and extracurricular opportunities are all part of it too - so look at the whole picture and what works for you. Engineering is an in-demand profession, so all 4 will land you in a job and unless you want to go on to research or academia, personally I think whichever option suits you best will be just fine.

Hello Rob! Thanks for these videos, they're great. I was hoping you'd make one for macquarie seeing that it has jumped from 250 to 130 in world uni rankings and placed 10th in australia if I'm not mistaken. What are your thoughts on doing a bachelor of applied finance and bachelor of IT at macquarie?
@ChoosingYourUni7 ай бұрын
That's good to know. I generally won't update videos just because of rankings because they can bounce around and, tbh, rankings are only one small part of the puzzle when it comes to choosing a uni. On Applied Finance/IT, I'm very positive about those at MQ. The Applied Finance program is very well reputed, and mixing that with IT is a great combo.
