This channel is about things I learn along the way that are not in the manual as I restore my Triumph TR3, TR6, or Spitfire. I ran into several issues as I aligned my crank and cam gear that I solved. First, the old shim was causing problems with getting a consistent height on the crank side. Second, you need to hold the crank gear down firmly to get an accurate reading, and we explore how that can be done. Third, there are some dimensional differences in the adjustable crank gear that need to be compensated for if you choose that route. I compare the dimensions of the OEM, The Roadster Factory, and the Adjustable cam gear that BPNW sells, and show how it impacts alignment.

I'm concerned about the shim. The shim should be completely around the shaft. The woodruff key stops at the shim. Where you cut it may catch on the key and cause a problem. When the shaft is spinning. I could be wrong but it looks like a possibility to me. Really appreciate your videos. I'm most likely going to be rebuilding one of mine motors in the near future.

Hi Mike. The shim is completely around the shaft. I cut a notch for the key, and slid it over. The key does not go back as far as the shim's final position, so the shim does not engage the key. Even so, it is "trapped" or captured by the force of the torqued down crank bolt, it isn't going anywhere. Let me know how your build goes.

Sounds like the adjustable one isn't worth the headache. Did you get with the factory on the differences?

I had a discussion with BPNW, but not powertune. I think I would explore Richard Good's if I hadn't already bought it. You could just align on the center of the gear if you had the one from Powertune. My next video will show I chose to elongate the holes in a nonadjustable gear to get it set right.
