Wonderful performance. But the press release has me scratching my head: "Until this point, there have been no really top notch natural trumpet albums by international trumpeters on the market." Did Crispian Steele-Perkins and Niklas Eklund drop off the market? Are Don Smithers' recordings still available? I'm not opining that Balsom isn't a top-notch player - she most certainly is - but, I think fortunately for fans of Baroque trumpet music, hers are not the only top-notch Baroque trumpet recordings for sale.

What they mean is there haven't been any beautiful natural trumpeters. Of course it's nonsense to suggest that there haven't been top notch trumpeters but Alison Balsom is the darling of the press because she is beautiful as well as being a great trumpeter. I saw Crispian Steele Perkins at St John's Smith Square years ago and he absolutely fits the description of top notch, but he isn't quite as gorgeous as AB.

It is a natural trumpet. It is the instrument intended for trumpet parts in music from the Baroque and much of the Classical periods.

It's actually twice the length of a modern trumpet! It needs more length because it doesn't have valves.

Hi Alison! This is awesome. I hope you are fine :-) I have a question to you: This fanfare has only few little holes which are (un)covered by your fingers of the right hand. When I was young I also played a small trumpet (B-Cornett) for about 12 years. But you know, such a trumpet has 3 venitles which have to be pressed in order to increase the way of the sound. But in this case, I cannot believe that you are able to control all the notes only with these very small holes and only with your lips. Or I am wrong? Best regards from Germany, Alison. Perhaps there is an internet page which perhaps describes this instrument? This would be great :-) :-)

Close, but it's actually a baroque trumpet. based on the design of the natural trumpet of the baroque era, vent holes were added in the mid 20th century to help with trills and intonation.
