Martha was character I pulled for the most. She was just someone who was trying to find her way and got pulled into a crazy world. This series was so well-written that even the supporting characters had a fascinating arc.

That's not a bad idea. Historically speaking, the dissolution of the Soviet Union could, without too much strain, give the writers legitimate ways to move the story along geographically and fairly naturally.

Martha was by far my favorite character and story line on the show. AW is fantastic--I cried through the end of episode 7. And her plight was a turning point for me in making me hope the Jennings are ultimately caught. I hope we eventually find out how Martha has fared in Moscow... assuming she actually made it. If she didn't, I could see that being a catalyst for Philip turning.

Martha does have an effect on Philip- he refuses to lure Kimmy to Bulgaria. He goes behind Elizabeth’s back to visit Paige and let her feel real frightening and clinical kgb assassin combat. It then helps save Paige so that when Stan says “do you know how many people in DC the KGB has murdered in the past 5,10 years” and Elizabeth says “we don’t kill people!” Paige knows it’s BS. A little later, she steps off the train.

Has anybody else noticed how many American television shows have British actors playing American characters? I wonder if it has something to do with contracts, unions and/or salaries? I believe that it started when Hugh Laurie played Dr. House. Now you see them all over the place. I don't recall seeing any American actor playing a British character in a British show. Maybe Hollywood actors have priced themselves right out of the market.
@wolfhound1138 жыл бұрын
+Steve, good point. There ARE a lot of UK and Australian actors working in the US. Now, I'm generalisering here. There are plenty of exceptions and in fact Alison Wright is one of them. It's not the pay - almost all actors are dreadfully under-paid. I think it's this: Most US actors are method actors. That's the Strasberg Method, some call it the Stanislavski Method. It's a very powerful method, but it's more difficult than it looks and it takes a lot to accomplish. Most non-US actors are not Method actors. Is this bad? Not necessarily. The UK and Australian actors you see are very highly trained. They are highly skilled and highly disciplined. They don't need to get "into" a character. No such actor would ever go out and drive taxi's for months to prepare for a role. While a method actor is storming around the set working himself up into a rage (because in the next shot his character will be in an argument), his Australian or UK counterpart will probably be playing cards with the lighting crew or reading a book. Because it's just work, it's his profession and he knows how to do it at any time and in fact can do it at any time. For a large production such as a television series this is - for the directors and producers - extremely useful. By the way, I said UK and Australian actors, but this applies to French, German, Polish, Irish, Lithuanian, Russian, Nigerian... Method acting is very much a US thing. Alison Wright started with a UK training and then switched to Method. I think she encompasses the best of both worlds. It's a delight to see her work. Her role as Martha is extremely difficult to play but she is so skilled she handles it with sumptuous ease. I'm glad that people recognise this.
