As an upperclassmen in college (actually almost exactly Alissa's age, I too am 20 and will be 21 in 2 weeks so that's cool), I see SO many girls going into college with similar problems. Girls (and guys, but I mainly see it happening with girls), PLEASE don't go into a "casual" relationship if you know in your heart that you really can't take it. If you do feel you may be head over heels for that guy/girl, then that's strike number one of a hint that it shouldn't be happening right there and will most likely end in complete heartbreak. Very rarely do Friends With Benefits/No Strings Attached endings actually happen irl... So many guys going into college think they can get away with it and so many girls think that's just the "way it is" in college, probably cause of stereotypes or how college is presented in pop culture and movies/tv shows, idk, but college doesn't mean that at all!! If you can handle it and you really don't want anything serious and just wanna have fun, then cool, you do you boo, but if you have any lingering feeling that you can't be "casual", please be honest with yourself from the start and not let yourself go down that road then. It's such a huge mess, and I see so many young girls heartbroken because of it. Especially freshmen. Girls, please know you have a say in relationships too. Speak up that you want a serious one if you do in fact want one. Don't stay hush about it just because you don't want to seem "uncool" or lose that guy or whatever. That's not fair to you and you never know, it might just end up well or at least for the best. Maybe the guy/SO wants to be serious too and just doesn't know that you want that too? Idk. For me, as someone who just knows that I personally could never handle a "casual" relationship, I just don't see it as a good idea ever but who knows. What works for you, works for you. Just be honest with yourself what that is exactly because it will save everyone a lot of time, drama, and stress. I myself honestly worry about all of this for my little sister who is an incoming freshman this next year... Interesting enough, I don't seem to see guys having this kind of problem of wanting to be "serious"/"committed"/"settle down" until later on. After or just before they become post-grads, the roles seem to reverse, and I see a lot more guys becoming heartbroken and frustrated because their significant others or "things/flings" just "want to be young and have fun" and not be in a committed relationship and they do. Boy or girl, let's just not string people along, okay? It would make life a lot easier...

I had a friend that was in a similar relationship with a guy she met at work, and she used to feel like shit ALL THE TIME because somehow, in her head, she'd normalized the fact that "love is supposed to hurt", and she did nothing when that dude hooked up with other girls or treated her like shit.
