I am 71, living in the U.K. My professional background was education and I.T. The main observation I now have, thinking about my life journey, is that government is not our friend. It used to be that governments engaged with voters and policy emerged from those in public service. Government is no longer a public service vocation, but a private profit model. In the U.K an MPs salary in 2024 is a minimum of £84,000. Compare that to the average wage in the U.K, and it's plain to see the massive disconnect. Uncontrolled Capitalism exploits people and all other Earth resources to drive profit for a small number of greedy individuals, who control the levers of power. No turkeys voting for christmas here.

The wages thing I'm not sure about. I'm a bit younger than you 63 and similarly in FE education. The thing that has struck me recently is the utter ineptitude of the people in charge, I've never wanted to be a manager so have just taught, but have observed the types of people that go for managers jobs. Almost exclusively they're not up to it, they have no background in management and the only difference is - like Johnson and the majority of the current cabinet members is... they are willing to take a risk and stick their heads above the parapet. They don't care if they might get shot down or fail, they're risk takers. They don't care about the consequences - they just move on leaving chaos potentially in their wake. The MP's wages are a conundrum, you might look at from the point of view that more money might attract the right kind of calibre of candidate, but then they'll settle in and do anything and say anything to maintain their job/position. But you're right - the day most people bought into Thatcher's there is no such thing as society and started the sell of our assets, was the day when it started to tip in the favour of the mega-rich. My own feeling is there needs to be a collective agreement that the population needs to decrease and the resources that exist already need to be re-used and recycled, the notion of 'Growth' needs to be re-looked at re-thought. We need to expect to live simpler lives far more in harmony with the planet.

And the funny thing is that even regions where capitalism is not that huge, like in the arabic states, making as much profit still has become the most important issue. Even the so called "communist" country China is pure capitalistic for several decades now. Which means exponential GROWTH. It's important to address that we can't change the way things are going.. there are no alternatives. I'm in my 20's and I've always thought that something must be done, but, unfortunately I don't anymore. Some people still think that we can change and break this "unchangebility", but I found it much easier to believe in eschatology, i.e. the end of humankind.

This system has conditioned you to think this way. Join an organization that shares your values and is doing something to improve the lives of others. It will take a mass movement to remove this profit based system and restore the balance of humans and nature. If the current system was able to solve climate change, it would have done so already. Opeth rocks.

Easier -- and lazier and more cowardly. It takes guts, strength, intelligence, great love, wisdom -- and much more -- to take an active role as a changemaker. The more people opt for the lazy & cowardly path, the greater the burden on those of us working to create a better system and reality.

This Young Man was right from his own perspective! Our earth is changing, do to all the extracting from below the earths crust. All the infrastructures that are built on the earths crust, come from below the ground! The crust humans live on is1,802 miles thick. Below the crust is the Earth's mantle, which is the layer of the planet, that lies between the crust and the middle of the planet, called the core which is 10,800 degrees. The mantle is very hot, with temperatures ranging from about 227 C (440 F) at the upper boundary with the crust to about 3,930 C (7,100 degrees F) at the core mantle. The mantle under the ocean is even hotter than previously thought, by about 60 C (110 degrees F) The earth has about 82 mineral which governments rely on for trillions of dollars in trade, a round the planet. Massive tunneling, massive voids where oil, natural gas, coal, gold, silver, iron, and so on the earth produces, which a thinner crust is developing, where heat rises faster to where people live! North Pole's Artic Ice is melting faster because of the amount of oil taking from below. The Earth is a living organism (which is alive) and is made up of water, like our bodies 96% water, 4% dust!

Act now, choose wisely if you're in the Western world. Don't vote for people who deny climate change for profit. We still have a short amount of time to adapt and mitigate, helping the others in the process. But we need to act, both individually and as a society.

The whole mindset of what can 1 person can do so why fight it is stupid. Like less oil workers less oil. But you simply having that 1 oil pump you have effectively made your personal co2 footprint almost 8x more then a normal household with a family of 5. Also if that 1 house with 5 people have a garden and do it as organically as possible and have it provid lots of food that can reduce there co2 footprint and save lots of money and reducing the amount of food a store will need to provide with also can reduce co2 as less farm land will be needed so less chemicals can be used. Yes 1 family can't do all that but when multiple people from around the world end up doing thus it can end up in the millions doing it wich will make an impact on the system as a whole.

My Grandfather took us fishing ALL the time at Fort Jackson Louisiana where the mouth of Mississippi meets the gulf of Mexico. We had floods because the levees couldn't handle the floods. We always had at least 1 to 3ft of water right into our homes from 1970 to 1984. I left New Orleans right after world's fair in late 1984. I been back few times YOU can see the effects of the elements from 70s right into now

There was a spark of hope with non-judgemental, indiscriminate COVID doing its thing, but that was "brought under control." Didja know, 1 billion seconds is about 31.7 years. Greed, yes, but greed that operates within a system that sees the world like a cyclops: through only one eye. Corporations and their officers are rewarded purely on profit, nothing else. The externalities of this profit is not included in the decision making process. Like fines for breaking laws, lobbying (bribing) government officials are merely seen as a cost of business. To change the rules of government seems almost as insurmountable as changing the actions of multi-national corporations.
