Who is Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh's ex-PM who fled the country amid protests?

Sheikh Hasina was once hailed as a democracy icon in Bangladesh for fighting a military regime. However, since 2008, she has been viewed as an authoritarian leader, accused of rights abuses and suppressing opposition. She won a fourth term in a controversial January election, boycotted by the main opposition and marked by low turnout. Born in 1947, she is the daughter of Bangladesh’s founding father. She joined forces with her political foe in 1981 to topple a military ruler. She first became prime minister in 1996, lost in 2001, and has been in power since a 2008 landslide, despite allegations of fraud in subsequent elections.

The last 10 years under Sheikh Hasina was also a period of unprecedented stability and growth for Bangladesh. As a Nepali, I was wishing Nepal had someone who could provide a strong leadership like Mrs Hasina. the growth of BD was never through her leadership but through the effort of its people who were exploited. Weather it was Hasina or Spongebob, BD would have still grew in its economy regardless of its representative-there is no correlation whatsover. The growth was inevitable, if anything it was achieved through Child labour and unfair pay to the labour class. You mention unprecedented stability, whilst it is true that BD has no foreign conflicts that is due to the government playing dog and master with India. Where is the stability when the majority of BD is neglected. A booming economy doesnt mean success but only that the country can make money, not to mention the only reason BD has done well in that is like I mentioned before exploitation.

If you should know anything about the history of Bangladesh, then it's this - Sheikh Mujib dosen't deserve to be titled "the father of the nation". Yes, he did play an important role during the liberation war, but he showed his true colors when he finally came to power following independence. The country was starving while Mujib would spend 400 crores for erecting his massive statute. After his murder, the whole of Bangladesh rejoiced, people did not even attend his funeral. Not only him, but his sons were also corrupted and unhinged. One of his sons had even raped and tortured the wife of an army officer, with no concequences whatsoever. He might have started off as a hero, but his legacy was that of a tyrant, an oppressor and an usurper. His daughter Hasina turned out to be no different.

The Jamat and BNP opposition parties are the SAME parties that assassinated Hasina's father and her child brother in cold blood. 18 members of her family were KILLED by them. I can understand why she is hesitant to have this party gain too much power. It is such a tragedy that the same parties forced her to flee her country for safety not once but twice. I don't agree with her actions during the job-quota protests but her story is tragic😢

Bragging about power is bad. But we have seen Sheikh Hasina's rule very closely. Corruption, looting, disappearances, murders and repression were rife in all sectors. A very shameful fall. His political results were nil. He was ready to create any situation for the sake of power. And did. Father and daughter are bad for both the 2 in August.
