No, it was to defend against the threat from the USSR and its subjugated and oppressed satellites. After the fall of the USSR, most of those satellites rushed to join NATO...they did not want the secret police and the torture chambers back. Learn some history, talk to the people from the Baltic states...you might learn something.

NATO was designed to stop an aggressive Soviet Union post WW2 from invading other countries. It was a defence alliance for European countries. In terms of wars in Europe, NATO alliance has made it difficult for wars to start and/or continue. NATO was not designed to stop wars started in other parts of the world.
