Ronald Smith is certainly not the fastest with Alkan's music but he is the most musical by far, he is an authority on Alkan with his writing detailed books, complete recordings for the listening of the audience (pls see his 1970 shortening of the Op 39 Solo Concerto) etc. Applied to the above, his recording is the best.
@BlueArchiveClassicalPiano4 күн бұрын
I personally find Smith unmoving and unbearable to listen to. He makes an effort, but S. lacks technique way too much to the point where either the music is unbearably slow and dragging or the focus is more on the technical aspect of the piece. One example is the very first minor etude, Comme Le Vent. Right away you can hear the unevenness of the right hand runs and the lack of control in general tone. Another is 1:17:42, or the recap of the D Minor Etude. S. clearly struggles with the right hands once again, lacking evenness and good tone. He even fails to clearly outline the left hand, which is the main melodic element in the passage. When it comes to Alkan, my usual go-to's are either Hamelin or Gibbons. Hamelin, being a technical beast, is unburdened by even the most dense textures. He rarely makes any awkward pauses and utilizes rubato in all of the correct places (e.g. his Op. 39 No. 7). Not to mention that he brings incredible energy and grandeur to the climaxes (e.g. Hamelin's interpretation of the passage at 2:12:36). Although I have yet to find a recording of the Op. 39 No. 8 that I am completely satisfied with, in the meantime, I think H.'s 2007 recording is by far the best; it's probably the closest representation to how the etude should sound on paper. Gibbons is similar to Hamelin in terms of the technical aspect mentioned before. He's usually not restricted from expressing himself in difficult passages. However, he also has two other aspects that pretty much no other Alkanists compete with; warm tone and symphonic sound. G.'s tone is usually very refined and deep, sometimes even giving off a "singing" vibe. He also understands and executes the symphonic sound of Alkan's works very well. Take his "con brio" of the Op. 39 No. 10, which is, in my opinion, the greatest recording of that passage in history. G. brings fantastic energy to the passage and really nails that symphonic feeling indicated in the piece; it really sounds like a whole orchestra playing in that hall. He also has incredible clarity that seems almost unhuman in that tempo. But my favorite aspect has to be how he shifted the melodic element from the right (like most others) to left by voicing the left octaves. John Ogdon also does that (and it appears that Smith does too), but Gibbons is by far the cleanest and most effective. Of course, my knowledge is pretty limited to the etudes, sonatas, and a few other sets like Op. 15. It's very possible that I may have missed something that you caught.

@@benjaminravail5028 I guess you're right, but what about 12 for feets only?????
@fredericfrancoischopin6971Ай бұрын
@@benjaminravail5028no, he is right. Op. 12, 13, 15 and 16 published with the title "Douze Caprices ou Etudes". Here the suffix ou means or, which means it can be accepted as an etude. It is certain that these four opus works were considered as caprices, which is confirmed by the Alkan website. But this is also very verifiable, it makes perfect sense as 12 caprice-studies. They are divided into categories, first book is trois improvasitions (They are already known as etudes, impromptu caprice etudes), second book is trois andante romantique (lyrical andante caprice etudes), third book is trois morcraux genre pathetique ( Dramatic and programmed caprice studies) and finally the fourth book is trois scherzi bravura (caprice etudes in form scherzo, they are already known as etudes) At the same time, the first two of the 3 andante romantiques are not easy. The first one is challenging. Second one is already a solo concerto piece (concerto camera no 3) Its hard enough. Only third one is weirdly easy for alkan etude. But if this etude title includes the first two, there is no condition for this not to happen for third one. It may be too easy an etude for Alkan's temperament, but ultimately we can count it as an etude, as the composer himself stated.
