@ethanp13482 жыл бұрын
I wanna argue with you when you say that Taika Waititi didn't influence the MCU outside of his film(s). Sure, he didn't shift the story of the MCU in any major ways, but Thor's character even in Infinity War and Endgame has that Waititi style as opposed to the style we'd seen from Thor-Age of Ultron. If we hadn't gotten Ragnarok between Age of Ultron and Infinity War, Thor would feel like a totally different character because he carried with him the stylization that Taika Waititi left with him. He absolutely had an influence on Thor's character even beyond his own film. I wouldn't necessarily put him in top-tier, I wouldn't put anyone there with just one film so maybe after Love and Thunder, but when you said that he hadn't influenced the MCU, it rang a little false to me.
@limetreess2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I’m glad you pointed that out! Chris didn’t even want to continue playing Thor and was already tired of the character by the end of the second film. Taika brought him back and breathed so much life and joy into him. Also Taika consults a lot with James Gunn so they collaborate on their visions as well.

Great tier ranking Sean! I agree and disagree with some of your placements to be honest… For me, the best MCU directors are without question the Russo Brothers, because they managed to pull off not just one fantastic film, but FOUR fantastic films! I also really like Jon Favreau because he set the foundation for everything that we all know and love. Although I didn’t like Iron Man 2, what he managed to do with the first film, was something to behold I think. Taking a character that not everybody knew, and making a solid film about a character that you wanted to see more of… I would also say James Gunn has had a big influence on the MCU as well to be honest. Plus he has a very distinct style of direction! I wasn’t keen on Volume 2 either but I still had some fun with the film though. Taika Waititi is definitely also worth mentioning for the same reasons, but I personally didn’t like Thor Ragnorak as much as the majority did… Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was pretty entertaining but it just didn’t really feel like Thor? Love and Thunder is even worse so that’s why Taika isn’t one of my favourites unfortunately. However Ryan Coogler is definitely a worthy mention though, and a personal favourite of mine nevertheless! I think Joss Whedon deserves some praise as well to be honest. I agree with your thoughts regarding him and what he managed to achieve!

Gunn is top tier. He put the MCU in space. It was his vision of the Guardians and space which the MCU used for IW and EG. Waititi is top tier. It was his vision of Thor in Ragnarok which the MCU successfully capitalized on in IW and EG.

Mostly solid list. I disagree with the placement of Cretton, Watts, and Zhao. Cretton is at least good providing a culturally rich film with a beautiful style for me. Zhao should at least be decent with her uniqueness despite how you feel about Eternals. But mostly… Watts should be really good or top tier. You don’t need to like all 3 films, but he’s the one director that has a trilogy in the MCU and that is HUGE impact.

7:22 technically not true, this has happened before. The first example that comes to my mind was the Universal Monster movies from the 1930s and 1940s where they introduced Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and the Wolf Man in their own solo movies and then brought them together in crossover movies. Arguably could be considered the first cinematic universe, decades before the MCU was a thing. I highly recommend them to anyone who hasn't seen them.

The MCU wouldn't be where it is today without Whedon, and made the best comic book movie of all time on his first try. That's impressive

Taika Waititi is a really great director but he's not made for the dark and serious storylines which were and are going to be adapted in Thor 3 and 4.

I think you gave too much weight on the story when ranking the directors. They’re not blameless for a bad story as a director does take part in telling the story, but at the same time you’re taking away points due to issues that are out of their control. Also I thought your issues with Shang Chi are also prevalent in Black Panther yet you put Ryan Coogler in the great category. Still a top tier video Sean. 👍👍

So i wanted to ask where you get your info on eternals because truth be told I don't really feel like anyone liked that movie at all. I would call both doctor strange movies, ant man movies and maybe guardians 2 polarizing but I feel like most people agree that eternals kinda stunk lol. Anyway was just curious to here your thoughts!

I don’t think I’ve ever agreed with one of your lists more. You captured just about all of my thoughts. The only thing I’d change is Sam Raimi’s placement. He’s just one tier too short imo. Also, it’s awesome to see you change up the ranking style

I disagree when it comes to Multiverse of Madness feeling like generic MCU in the first 40 minutes, when there were plenty of Sam Raimi-isms in that first 40 minutes. The only time it ever felt like generic MCU was the opening scene with Defender Strange. But as soon as we saw that whip pan to Christine during her wedding, which is a camera move he uses a lot, I knew I was watching something directed by Raimi. Then during the Gargantos battle, the scenes of it scaling the side of a building felt like the Doc Ock fight from Spider-man 2. We also see a first person POV shot from Gargantos, as Raimi likes to do that a lot as well. Plus the eyeball popping out was just like a similar scene in Evil Dead 2. So that first 40 minutes was more than just generic MCU

It seems like the better director they get the more issues they have outside of black panther .
@SeanChandlerTalksAbout2 жыл бұрын
It kind of depends on the director's skill set.

@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout the problem is the mcu doesn’t let the directors direct outside of maybe 4 of the 30 movies . It’s better to get an unknown because they can push them around more .

The problem with Thor the Dark World was not Kevin Feige but the Marvel creative control committee led by marvel president Ike Pearlmutter. He really created a lot of production problems in phase 2.
The russos are in a league of their own . For me their films are above any others in the series. They’ve done 4 of my top 5 mcu films and I think most people would agree with that
