I can't get the dog in shorewatch to engage with me. It is occasionally eat the food I throw at it, rarely has a heart displayed but never lets me pet it. Is there a trick to getting it to allow me to tame it, please?

Tyger disappeared on me, I found him in the cemetary lone Thistle but had food not bait, when I returned there was no cat, looked for an hour 6 different times, tried to use another cat and the alchemist is not having it, cannot progress without it, sucks.
