It's the first episode of my All About A Tale of Two Cities Series! I'll talk about the book in chunks that mirror the original installments in the journal "All the Year Round."
Today I tackle the famous first chapter - "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." - the ideas of resurrection, Jarvis Lorry's strange dream, Dickens' inspiration for the story, and his theme that people are mysteries. Phew! That's a lot.
So, if you're teaching A Tale of Two Cities, or you're studying it in class, this is the perfect series for you. Let me know if you have any questions below. I'd love to talk.
Don't forget to subscribe for more English nerdy goodness!

RE ch 1, it's really just the 3rd paragraph I think which throws readers off track, with it's obscure references to stuff that Brits of the time world presumably recognize. The remainder sets the tone well to my mind, the gruesome punishment in France and crimes in England, plus the idea that there are ordinary trees and carts in the world with a terrible destiny ahead.

This was so moving; you made me cry. -- I've started this book so many times, I can't believe I finally made my way through to the end, all thanks to your help and guidance. This is a book I will read again and again, and will study closely. Thanks again.

Hi. I'm also a high school English teacher helping students work on this book and a thousand thanks to your video, which was of great help to me when I was preparing the lessons. The thing that I found the most frustrating is that students are really scared off by the way of story telling, and I kind of have to try many means to lure them back to the book. I'm really curious how you are reading the book with your students, especially during class hours. Any tips or feedbacks would be greatly appreciated. Have a nice day!

If I had to propose (in my humble opinion) an alternative title for this novel, it would have been _The Resurrection of the Life_ First of all, because of how much that passage from the gospel of John shapes Carton by the end of the book, and also because the book really focuses on death as being a spiritual/psychological state and not merely a biological one. Clearly there is a lot of death in this book, but we can’t forget that there are also at least two “resurrections” as well.
