Kinda glossed over it, but to clarify for anyone new to braces, the two jaw chuck is for the tapered square auger bits and a three jaw chuck is for round shanked bits.

Anyone from the UK, Workshop Heaven stocks two models of new braces that have three jaw chucks AND accept square tapered shanks. I'm planning on getting one as they look very useful, but they arent cheap (especially the Deluxe one)

Sometimes there is a problem cleaning and re-lubing old chucks. There may be little ball bearings about 3/32' in diameter inside so work over a baking tray, a cookie sheet is ideal so if there is a surprise you'll catch the parts. This is especially likely in the extremely high quality tools. A little smear of grease on internal contact surfaces is an ideal re-lube.

Glad for the thumbs-up. Another potential surprise is that the springs that open the jaws can go sproing into the sawdust. Ask m how I know.

Lee Valley Tools here in Canada sells braces, two and three jawed chucks as well as the "egg-beater" drill. They also sell various taper square bits including a 3/8" socket driver and 1/4" hex for screwdriver bits.

My step dad just surprised me with a Stanley brace. I’ve been looking to see if it has all its parts and what not. Still unsure but I’m excited to clean it up and see how well it works. Jaw looks good-ish. Might need a new spring but I’m glad you’re here so I can just keep binging lol!

Love my new three jaw brace, it's such a good tool. Used it today with a standard 3mm drill bit and I was boring a hole that was just smaller than the entire length of the drill bit. I had very little wiggle room on the 8mm thick workpiece that I was drilling through, plus I was drilling at an angle. I did four of them and they all turned out perfectly because you can take your time and follow a line horizontally (I didn't use the ring trick as I've no idea where my wedding ring is, but I find just working out the spot on your stomach or groin to push against works perfectly every time). There's no way I wouldn't have skewed one of the holes with my power drill and ruined a workpiece.

In a pinch, a substitute for a brace is a mechanics speed handle, similar in appearance to a brace, and a deep well socket that your tapered bit will fit tightly into. It is not as good as a proper brace, but it does work. I got a set of "very cheap" bits from the cheap tool store, and every bit was a hex shaft and all were different sizes shafts. Using the speed handle method is a pain with these and requires a brace that excepts them. I don't use them much. BAD CHOICE PURCHASE I also have a set of old fashion square tapered bits, over 100 years old now that belonged to my great uncle. They need sharpening badly. How do we do that properly? Great video ;-)

Man, I love braces. Really love my yankee 2101a one. Heavy, but wonderfully smooth. I still would like a lighter short swing one for light applications and if the chonky one is overkill. Or a wooden one for kicks.

Thanks for the video :) Question: The first time i used mine the bit snapped. I didn’t know what i was doing but i didn’t think my technique was that bad. Is it me? is it the bit? It was a pretty cheap bit for electric drills. i was drilling a hole in a pine bed slat. Thanks again!
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 3 жыл бұрын
If it was a small twist bet it was probably the technique. They are very brittle and any horizontal force will snap them I normally do not go any smaller then 1/4" with these. For smaller I generally use the egg beater drill. If it was bigger then 1/4" then it was probably a bad bit. Usually these work better with augers then twist bits.

I don't know if anyone or other wood worker came across this type of brace. My first antique bit brace has a small switch that you can flick side to side to lock it in place for the clicking to happen and etc etc. Though the jaw is very, very different, it does hold square bits like the antique auger drill bits, but not all of the sizes just about 4 or so can fit.(and if anyone wondering "why I choose it". Well the only reason why I got that one was mostly because it was the cleanest and at the time I didn't have anything for restoring/cleaning tools. I'm 19 so I'm a youngster that still learning 😂 😂 😂)). I can't describe exactly how the jaw works, but picture this in your head. the jaws kinda like expand, instead of seprating like in this video and as you unscrew the head part. The jaws closes and as you screw the head back down the jaws expands open. Sorry if i didn't explain so good, but if anyone interested in this or you James I can put a link here for people to read about it. Cause this bit brace is alittle more unique as far as from other braces I seen both modern ones and antique ones.

@WoodByWrightHowTo

I bought Robert Larson 10" brace it have got 3 jaws. It wasn't cheap but it have got incredible grip and it's ratcheting mechanism is very good, i bought it because i wanted to use the wood drill bits that i have got, and i also bought 2 auger bits which are high quality and they are making the boring not boring 😜. Because i am new to it my first brace was a cheap one with 4 jaws that was half the price and the weight of the Robert Larson but it couldn't hold a 8mm drill bit it was poor manufacturing!!!! So if you want to bore with a modern brace don't use the 4 jaws because you will be madly bore!!!
