Hey, nice video. Just as an FYI though they will often dull their colours when they are wanting to heat up as well as the darker their colouration the more they absorb heat. In my experience this is the main time this is clearly discernible. First thing in the morning especially.

Thanks for the knowledge. I have had my male for almost 4 years now. He has a bad spot on his tail. Called tail rot from what I’ve seen. Anything you know of that might be able to help that?

Hi Kelley! Sorry for the late reply I didn't spot this. I don't have experience with tail rot unfortunately so can't help in this instance :/ Could only really recommend going to see an exotic vet, hopefully they'll be able to help. Has he improved at all? 🤞

Sorry for the extra late reply.. Charlie dropping her tail was always a fear of mine but it's not something that's ever happened to and it turns out, I was misinformed, Chinese water dragons can't drop their tails at all and I'll be editing this video to remove that segment.

Charlie was around £60, they're quite common so not too costly. And yeah! In a large enough enclosure you can keep 1 male with a couple females but they're more than happy kept alone. It's typically safer than mixing to be honest and they are considered solitary.

Really? I've done a lot of research on it and while it doesn't seem to be a common circumstance, I've never come across a source saying they're incapable of it. Would you mind posting the link or source so I could check it out? :)

It's very common for them to "loose" their tails. They can drop them, but in my experience raising dozens of hatchlings. Once in a while they establish a "pecking" order and often bite off tail tips. I've had captive born & bred babies from 2018 loose tail segments by fifteen months of age, only to find by eighteen months they have "black nubs" growing back which is the regenerated tail (which is always regenerated completely black) However 9/10 times when housed alone, the likely hood of them dropping their tails will not happen. My best breeding female is seven years old and is just as flawless as the day I got her (even when breeding with my big male!)

There are variations on tail autonomy. While many species have well adapted to dropping their tail most agamid type lizards are not so derived at it. From what I've learned their tails can "break off" on fracture planes when they are pressured. While something like a leopard gecko is more capable of consciously removing its own tail.

Why would they drop their tales unless grabbed? I know to wear long sleeves when handling, because of my bearded dragons, but my water dragons are still young not even juveniles until mid June.I hope one of two are a female.I’m unsure if they’d want to continue living together

Honestly I think I made a mistake there. I've been told my entire life that they drop their tails but it turns out they don't. Their tails can break off and partially regrow (sometimes deformed) but that's an injury thing not an intentional drop. I'm gonna edit this vid and remove that statement! They can live together in male female or female female pairs just make sure your enclosure is HUGE as they grow. Otherwise they'll likely fight. I'm jealous though haha, I miss when Charlie was a tiny little thing. Thanks for watching 😄

If I remember correctly, Charlie cost me around £60-80, the real cost is in the setup, for a proper sized viv, decor and heating/lighting elements, you're looking at least £300. More depending on how good and natural you want it looking! Worth every penny though :)

Here where I live they cost about 30 dollars and the enclosure is about 200 to 500 dollars depending on terrarium size

The Dragon itself is pretty cheap, better off spending a few more bucks and trying to source a captive bred individual. The setup is hella expensive though. Tons of room, lots of climbing, heated and filtered water. Also lots of maintenance on these guys.
