All About Color: 35mm Film History & Demonstration

Early cinema was a revolution, especially when colored film was released. People were astonished to see vibrant images move across a screen as this new phenomenon took the world by storm. But what does it take to give 35mm silent motion picture film those colors?
In this webinar, Historic Process Specialist Nick Brandreth will demonstrate the process of coloring 35mm motion picture film. Then, Anthony L'Abbate, preservation manager in the Moving Image Department, will discuss color film techniques, used during the silent era, such as tinting, hand color and stenciling. And the methods that we use today to preserve and restore these films.

I’d love to see some of these films, especially “The Fire Brigade” (1926). Looks stunning. I know it was restored recently. Where might the public be able to access these films outside of film festivals? Are they viewable only at festivals? I’d so desperately love to see this picture in its intoxicating, saturated, Technicolor no. III and Handschigel glory.
