Just started reading on my kindle having watched a couple of videos. Have noted the patterns of three query and provide some insight. In cognitive theory patterns of three establish a depth of processing approach involving memory and learning. Suffice it to say that hearing a song once may spark an interest; hearing the same song three times creates a ‘knowledge’ of the song. This is the human brain condition and seems woven all throughout literature. A wonderful literary journey!

I’ve known about patterns of three in literature and fairy tales for a long time but didn’t realize it had a cognitive connection. Interesting!

I personally like the Hollander translation. It’s easy to read, beautiful, with lots of notes and side by side Italian. :)

I once came across one explanation as to Virgil's self-recusing behavior in the prospect of entering heaven, which I wonder if you personally find any merit in? It says that Virgil's death precedes Christ's birth, and by that fact Virgil is denied everlasting life in heaven and can only be as "successful" as reaching the very verge of transcending human errors (namely climbing to the top of mount Purgatorio).

That sounds like a legitimate interpretation to me!
