This was hard to watch, but as you say, it is very important to know this stuff, and face it if you're going to have a snake. Having to feed rodents is what has kept me from having a snake for a long time, but I got over feeding roaches to my bearded dragons, so I hope I will get used to this, too. Has anyone recommended garter snakes to you? In the wild they mainly eat earth worms and fish since they're often found on edges if rivers fishing. But it is recommended to give frozen thawed since it's better nutrition for them but it's cool how happy they get over earth worms :)

@@RevivalistPoet777 Biggest issue with that is some people don't realize that garters do still need rodents on occasion. Or you can substitute rodents for chicken organs, chopped up organ sausages, stuff like that. But again, unfortunately some people don't realize that they still need that occasional rodent or chicken liver.

gabija luki how did you convince your mom!? To me it's impossible
@dreamdragon17457 жыл бұрын
Well it took a long time to do i first told her i was interested in these particular animals then i kept reminding her of that fact and slowly debunking fake snake stories (like the one where they stretch out to test if they could eat you during the night) then i started to show her pictures of the snake i wanted and providing interesting facts about the species. I also found funny videos of different snakes (like a hognose with a top hat and fake mustache) also i would point out that ball pythons have a puppy face making them cute. When she got comfortable with looking at the images i started telling her of their good temperament and the fact that they have been bred a lot and ate one of the tamest snakes that get a comfortable size and are not dangerous. The hard parts where to convince her that the snake would in fact not eat our two cats and my dog. As well as get her over the fact that it would eat rodent. I had to tell her that i would only buy a snake that eats frozen and provide different ways i could try to feed it if it didn't take frozen (which included changing the prey item or give it another smell from other foods they may find appetizing or even warming the food up to trick the snake) and i had to admit that if i could not feed it in any other way only then i would try to give it live. The last step was to let her touch a snake. I was looking for shops or rescue centers that would allow you to touch and handle snakes. I found one and we all went together. While there i was given a corn snake and the little girl was amazingly calm and well behaved. I first gave her to my dad and them to my mom and she really liked how soft and smooth the snake felt. And well now i have been given permission to bring one of these beautiful creatures home :)

Humane death? How is it humane to be bred just to be killed and fed to snake without any chance of avoiding that fate? I find that in nature, the mouse does atleast have a chance to avoid getting caught. Seems much more "humane" to me.

You could also get a mouse is a pet and then you don't have to feed dead animals. I'm not saying it is wrong to have a snake. I have a cat and I'm well aware of the fact that he eats meat as well. Honestly watching you kill the mouse was really difficult for me, BUT I'm 100% sure the way you euthanised that mouse is far more humane than how animals are slaughtered for use in commercial pet food for dogs/cats etc. but people don't tend to think about that because it comes pre-packaged and we don't think of it as being made of a dead animal in the same way. This video is super honest and informative and gives a really comprehensive picture of the necessities of feeding snakes, and I really appreciate how you don't sugar-coat it. If anything it's taught me that I'm not emotionally ready to own a snake yet, and I have to get over my squeamishness first. If I'm not 100% sure I can deal with the possibility of having to live-feed a picky snake, then I am not 100% sure I can look after one to the best possible level of care, right? Hopefully watching more of your videos will help!

i felt the same way! i raise and butcher pigs with my mom, and we always try to make it super fast and painless. a bullet through the head to knock the pig out and sort of paralyze it, then slitting the neck so the heart stops. it always looks so much worse than it is, and it always makes me feel bad, but i know they went fast and didnt die slowly or conscious, and they didnt feel anything. i relate to Jossers a lot, i hate to do it but it has to be done.
@ryanpayne91194 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I honestly flinched when I heard the neck snap. And I'm the kind of person who has zero issue dropping a buck from 100yds. Having it be, literally, hands on makes it far more unpleasant. I don't own a snake, but I plan to. Hopefully, I'll never have to do this, but at least now I know (and am wondering if a .22LR blank would be faster and more humane. Hopefully, I never need to find out.)

It of course makes me uneasy Feeding them rodents because I have 2 pet hamsters but mg response was," us as humans don't need meat to survive but a snake needs a rat/mouse to live as nothing else really gives them enough nutrients, it would be crule not to give them what they need to live" in my opinion there's nothing wrong with feeding rats, some eat cows, chickens and pigs. Snakes need them, we don't. I showed my mom this video, she was more convinced then Before, thank you!

I don't own snakes but do own Russian tortoise, but pets are their own. Snakes are live eating predators. Yes it's not nice to see the rodent die. I'm about halfway through the video now, just saw you kill the mouse. I was thinking about why you would kill them yourself instead of buying them already dead and realized it was probably more humane. the way they're raised in industries is cramped and probably bad. Plus aren't they suffocated which is probably much more painful and takes longer. At least your rats/mice had a good life. I understand snakes need to eat and now have a new understanding for pre-kill. When it comes to live feedings I have very little tolerance for. The only way I see it necessary is if the snake if rejecting frozen or pre-kill.The rat/mouse would go through more pain and fear with live feedings. I did finish the video and see that's why you were feeding the snakes live. I wanted to thank you for this video it's given me new information about feedings. I don't enjoy seeing it as you said. but it has to happen. I do not have pet snakes but I do have two pet rats. I am a vegan and probably will never have snakes because I wouldn't be able to feed them.

I had originally shied away from feedings (live especially) but I do have a new respect for them, not that I enjoy watching it. I don't know why anyone would enjoy it. I do want to thank you for making this video. In all honesty it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Although the baby rat twitching and struggling was sad :( but pythons are constrictors and that's how they've done it since day 1.
@nocturne20296 жыл бұрын
Nobody wants to feed live, not only is it more unpleasant for the feeder animal, but it's dangerous for the snake! As far as I know, just about all snake keepers would rather feed dead than live, that way there's no way for the snake to get hurt in a feeding. The only reason to feed live is if the snake really won't eat dead. I think pre-killing can also help reluctant feeders, so it's not just about what's humane. As for commercially available frozen feeders, most of them are suffocated using gas like CO2. I honestly don't know if it's painful, but I remember reading that they seem to just go to sleep. I'm not sure if feeders can be killed with CO (carbon monoxide, which kills faster and really is painless) because I'm not sure what the residual CO in the bloodstream would do to the snake, if anything. Thank you for being understanding! There's no way around rodent feeding with snakes, it's just necessary.

Yeah I think I'll just stick to frozen thawed myself. Prekilling is definitely better for all involved than just giving live prey but I personally could never do that. Ironically I love rodents as well. Also that was possibly the cutest mouse in the world lol. Most people should not live feed because of the damage the mouse/rat can do to the snake, especially if the snake is inexperienced or just not that hungry. Look up pictures of what they can do to your snake, not worth it. And also I think its just brutal for the mouse to have to go through. It's not natural when you drop it in a tank with no possible way to escape. Not humane to feed a rat pup like that, like I said when your snake is a pet it's not natural and not fair. Unless the snake will absolutely not take a prekill I think it's just unnecessarily cruel.

Live feeding is very difficult to do and, in my opinion, unecessary if the snake wants to take dead. The reason why I am showing it in this video, is that as an owner of a ball python, you are in the risk of having to do this if they go into this feeding strike. I don't feed live otherwise. Hi! Really like your video, the info is so complete. What I wonder about is why you first sedate the mouse. It seems if you just break the neck it is less stressfull (maybe less painfully) than when you slap it. Can you explain that too me? Thank you!

Rewatching this I think I need to reconsider my wish for a ballpython. I recently spoke to my fiancé about having a snake and he is really uncomfortable with the rodent feeding. I would feed frozen, but if the snake wouldn't eat those I think I would be able to feed live. But my fiancé could definitely not handle it. Even if he wasn't in the room he knows what's happening and it makes him really uneasy. It really broke my heart a bit when he was telling me his thoughts, but I need to respect this. I would also really love to have a boa, and I think maybe it's the better option, because they are known to be very good feeders, and would be more likely to eat frozen. Maybe I could talk my fiancé into that. The downside on that is that I live in an apartment for rent. And for all I know I'd need the allowance of my landlord for bigger snakes just as boas because they are considered "dangerous" in Germany. I am not sure if this is gonna happen. So I am a bit desperate. But thank you for the informative Video. It's very important to know how to handle the snakes prey, and although the prekill wasn't nice to look at, I think it is important for us to have in mind, that the mice are still living creatures, who's live we take. This gives me great respect and gratitude towards them, and I will always think of it when I feed a rodent in future. If ever...

most people will think this is bad, but you need to make sure your snakes are healthy and well fed, its just what you have to consider when owning a snake

I have been looking for lots of videos and websites to care for ball pythons, and glad you made this video, even though it slightly broke my heart because I have pet rats XD. I didn't mind as much as the live kill as the euthanized rat, because I myself could not do it. But again, thanks for the video! It's really helping me understand their feeding

Brilliant video. Just a question, if I asked the seller wether they feed live or frozen would think effect what my snake would eat?

You are an amazing teacher. Thank you. I, too, couldn't take care of snakes because I know that I will have to feed it a mammal. Couldn't get myself to do that. But after I saw a beautiful baby Kenyan Sand Boa, I could not hold off any longer. I got the little cutie and been giving him frozen thawed pinkies. It is not as bad as I thought but that is bec I see a DEAD pinky. Someday, I know I will have more snakes and then I will have to do your method. Which is absolutely practical as snakes never eat dead animals in the wild. I am getting used to the idea of feeding mammals so I hope I will be up to it when the day comes and I have to euthanize the rodent before giving it to my snake. If I still can't do it, there is my husband to do it for me. hahaha! Thank you so much for all your videos!! I love each and every one of them!!

After you've got a prekilled adult mouse / rat is it safe to leave the dead rodent in the enclosure overnight if your snake has not eaten it yet?

Thank you so much for this video! I had 2 ball pythons growing up, and we always did pre-kill using a similar method - equally humane and quick - with our rats that we bred for that purpose. Occasionally there would be a feeder that little 10 year old me would get attached to and we would end up with a pet rat. 😆 But even then I understood why it needed to be done since our BPs were pretty picky (the male had been wild-caught as a baby). I’m going to be getting some variation of a boa constrictor in the very near future and I’m brushing up on my knowledge so I can care for it properly. Your videos are great and very helpful and informative, so thank you again!

Thank you so much for this video..... people don't even realize how important it was to show the reality of owning pythons......I just picked up a banana ball python and it's the first snake I've owned in years.......I owned a Burmese python 20 years ago and she was a 20 foot plus snake.....and she became pretty hard to handle I had an incident with her she bit me and coiled on me......luckily it was just around my arm but afterwards I was pretty intimidated by that.....but she was on rabbits and I had to knock them out like you did the rat.....and man it sucked really bad especially the 1st one I had to do it..... I used to do live but she got injured once bye the rabbit claws....... but sorry for the long rant...... just hopefully new snake owners realize this is the reality of owning one.....

Got a snakling Florida King. So far he loves frozen thawed pinkies. Hopefully he doesn't lose his love for the frozen. But I'll do whatever for him to be healthy. Kings tend to be good eaters

Just got my first snake today! It’s a normal ball python. After an hour of bringing it home I tried to feed it... it had absolutely no problem with a live fuzzy which I found very odd because it was in good health and just got in a new enclosure. Did I just hit the jackpot for my first snake?
