I'm learning on a Yamaha YRF-21 fife. The most brutally out of tune are Bb and second register D. Really tough for someone who is essentially tone deaf.

That nail polish thing, I did that when I started at age 10. Now 50 years later your videos made me pick up a nice flute and start playing again. Thanks Love it. And still sounds quite nice actually.Going to harvest some more advise here to get up to speed again.

I'm learning on an old 1980s Artley flute. Intonation is tough. You give the BEST hands on theory/concept talks I've seen in a long time. Your ambusher lesson is top notch. For sure, a thumbs up!

Clarinet players use resonance fingerings to bring down sharp notes in the throat register. Do flute players ever do this? Thank you for all of the great information!
@TheFlutePractice2 ай бұрын
We have alternate fingerings that definitely help with bringing down the pitch when needed, yes. I try to use them as the exception though and develop the ability to change intonation with the embouchure as much as possible so we can keep the ace up our sleeve when needed.

I watched this after spending most of my practice today obsessing in front of the electronic tuner. I now realise why this is such a self-defeating approach and why different keyboards/software/instruments can be out of tune with one another. I'd been baffled by this since I first bought my keyboard & flute 18 months ago. Thank you so much for solving that mystery!!

I found your channel while researching about intonation. Very helpful btw. Discovered many things I didn't know. I used to play more often than I play now. Flute was my 1st instrument and I studied at a conservatory here in Portugal until I left to study engineering. Now I play guitar, bass, sax and still play a little flute sometimes. For old times sake, I bought myself a flute with a C foot joint. My first flute is all rusty and unplayable. After watching this video I have a question for you: could a B foot joint make intonation more even? thanks :)

Hey! Loved the video! I just have one doubt, about that last exercise that was recommended to do with the tuner between the octaves. Isn't it a bit like doing scales with the tuner, which wasn't considered a good idea? I ask because I would love to do an exercise to tune the high octave with tuner, but I was always told that doing it with the tuner was not ideal! Also, should the exercise really be done from low to high register (two octaves wide) or is it from mid to high register? Many thanks to anyone who can answer my questions! 🙏
@TheFlutePractice2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I actually agree that generally, just working with a tuner is not a good idea. We rely on looking at it instead of using our ears and tuners also have their problems. But, octaves are always safe to practice because the tuner is very accurate with the octave. Some tuners even have a drone, which is great to practice with and I am going to be making a video soon about how to use your tuner well. To start with, I would just do octaves spanning over 1 register, so low to middle then middle to high. Then try two as an extra challenge. Remember to use the tuner as a reference point but rather listen and let your ears do the work. Hope that answers your questions!

What if I have particular note that's out of tune? In my case, I always have an issue with the high E. It tends to be so sharp. I tried to loosen my embouchure. But, I can only loosen my embouchure so much until it turns into a pp.

I am a beginner; why is F sound such a hassle, I can't get any sound at all; would it be the flute itself. Because, I recently came across with it in the attic sitting a quite sometime? All other sounds are pretty okay though!

Which F? Sounds to me a bit like a leaking pad somewhere there or an adjustment screw. Go get it checked out at a technician to be sure.
