I love the example of Tina Turner! She fascinates me and I don't think she's talked about enough in conversations about proportions!! There's a hilarious quote from her where she says something along the lines of looking like a little pony. Such an icon.

I think it’s a very useful system but it has contradictions, there is no doubt about that. But I don’t find the contradictions interfering with how it works when you dress as long as you stick to some rules. The biggest problem is clearing up all the misinformation because a lot of things that Kibbe never said have been mistaken for facts and they contribute to people finding this confusing and contradictory.

@Johnny Football Club "kibbe says vertical is not about how tall you are ... Christina Hendricks was X type until kibbe realized she was taller than he thought" (paraphrasing) "Vertical is automatic at 5'6" and above" (but it's not about how tall you are). First question on the quiz: "people usually think I'm taller than I am" ... writes a book with a quiz in it ... "don't pay attention to the quiz, it's not supposed to give you any real information" (again paraphrasing). I think Kibbe has made a career out of confusing women by constantly moving goalposts that were vague to begin with. Trust your own judgment, folks, this ain't the rocket science kibbe makes it out to be.

Then congratulations, you're close to healing. I mean I'm joking, however I do notice that people who are heavily into this system start to lose their grip on reality a little bit. Kibbe himself doesn't always listen to his own advice frankly speaking, and it seeme like he creates rules as he goes. Besides his system was based on another, much less strict one. I do see merit in this system - especially everything having to do with lines. However that's it. Implementing it religiously is overdoing it in my book🤷‍♀ I'm sure that in the future countless new systems about style, body and whatnot will be created anyway. So take what works for you, and leave the rest I say

I'm exactly 5'6 / 167cm. I don't have any straight lines. People comment on my petite-ness overall. TR lines fit me perfectly. This makes me SD although there's nothing dramatic or yang about me. Besides my extraordinary height apparently. I could maybe convinced to be a C, though I despise its cuts and recs on me. This forces me to turn away from kibbe which I have been obsessed for the last two years. And continue my life as a TR. No point in digging any deeper as height directly types me.

I'm sorry you are discouraged. You may have TR essence, and you should wear what makes you happy. SD and TR do have some similarities as TR have a bit of drama in the yang of their bones, just like SD. True TR are extremely rare as it requires extreme petiteness and almost bird like bone structure like Vivien Leigh. Dita Von Teese is an example of a different body type embodying TR style and she always looks so lovely.

@@annointedandappointed thank you for the reply :) In the end, I will choose the advice I like and stop naming myself. Again I could be convinced for SC or R(I don't think i need to accommodate vertical), as I am often considered tiny-ish though it's clear to everyone I'm not short, or tall, just average-height. But suddenly being thrown at the other end of the spectrum makes the system sound unsettled. At the very least, some ethnicities are taller, some are shorter. I don't think you can name a height limit just like that. It should be a spectrum.

Thank you for clarifying about Rihanna, I'm a TR and I always thought she didn't really look petite and have double curve. I think that this has confused people for years as to what a TR actually is and looks like. Also she can pull of so many oversized looks and fabrics that would drown a real TR.

This helped me so much, your explanation of curve and elongation make perfect sense in understanding vertical! I have a Q: am I automatically vertical if I am 5 foot 5.5"? I have curve and don't have elongation. I don't read as straight, either, because of the curve. It makes everything I wear hang off of me instead of falling flat or straight down from my bust. Some forums have said petite is strictly 5'5 and under, so I'm confused!

What if you're over 5'6 but people think you look under 5'6? People constantly think I'm 5'4. My sister is 5'4 and I am 5'8. No one believes I'm taller until we stand right next to each other. Like our family does this as well as strangers. My SIL is also 5'8 and people don't believe were the same until we're right next to each other, and even then will say I still look shorter. I have short legs and a long torso, but is my long torso really enough of a vertical line when I am consistently thought to see shorter than I am? I'm pretty fleshy so automatically I would be a SD on just those 2 features, when I honestly think SN is more me because I do have wide shoulders. Kibbe is so confusing.

My elongation shows in my arms (when i stand straight they are past mid thigh) , legs & i am very short waisted. I used to think i was a small FN but my family said i dont have a strong or frame dominant presence but i do look sharp. My shoulder seams are placed above my chest level so I'm settled with DC if that's how width is determined.

So is it not possible to have to accommodate width, vertical, and curve? I'm pretty sure I'm a SN because FNs are too dry for me, I gain fleshy weight easily on my arms, cheeks, and hips/thighs (I'm fit and at a healthy weight, but even when underweight my arms, cheeks, and thighs retain most of their fleshiness), but I have the shoulder width and elongation to deal with. I am also 5'7".

A couple of questions, did the height limit change? I remember them being different and higher than what's been said in the video. Secondly, I eventually had found my kibbe type thanks to their original description, in term of outfit proportions (not "style" or character, legitimate proportions and specific silhouettes and details). Specifically, I'm 5'5 and I'm 1000% positive I'm one of the so called "petite types". Now I wouldn't fit the height limit of that type based on what's been told here. So what now? I've already explored the more vertical side of types and I don't accomodate vertical at all. What would this leave me with then?
@blackwing97

I'm a relative newbie but I hope I can help you since no one else has replied. I think kibbe has added some information about height on the facebook group. like how DCs can't be over 5'6 now. the best test is to try the clothing recs and see what does or does not work. kibbe is a tool to help you look at things with an analytical eye and see what's working or not working, and how you can improve your style/bring out your best attributes. so try the reccs for the types you're considering and see how you feel about them. always trust your gut. this is more an art than a science. I wish you luck.

@@blackwing97 yes I did by clothing recs. So in the end, after exploring nearly all types, there was one of the "petite" types that had recs that all fit me perfectly. So eventually, even though I liked a "tall type" more, I settled on the one that worked for my body best and used those recs since then and got better outfits as a result. My issue is that I'm 5'5, so if suddenly he decided that the "petite" types are 5'4 max then I'm out automatically, but I've already explored the other types and the recs don't work. So my options are either I keep up the recs for the short type I settled on regardless of height requirements, or (if apparently those recs would now be wrong for me with his new height limits) I have to start looking all over again for a different system altogether that fits me best, which I don't really want to go through all over again lol That's why I was asking mainly

I'm still a bit confused. I thought I had short arms and moderate legs. So Soft Natural made sense to me (I do have clearly visible width). Then I thought, I might be a bit to "dry" for SN but would lack vertical to be FN. But the softer, romantic leaning lines of the SN feel odd on me. I am 168cm tall. I also checked the proportions of my arms and legs again (I find it hard to see those in myself) and my arms are rather moderate and my legs moderate to long (depending on which definition you read through). So would that automatically mean I can't be SN and would much rather be FN? (Coz SN = width + curve, FN = width + vertical.) It's not too important to me, but I'm always curious to learn new things and that would explain, why I like FN clothes more on myself than SN clothes (which I thought was just personal preference in my case).

Always go with the ones that feel “right” to you. I’m in the same boat. I’m about the same height and I have assets that would seem to suggest I’m softer and curvier and I thought I was moderate on vertical as well, but any “soft” lines on me immediately make me look bulky and just plain weird. When Natural was still a type ( 5 seconds ago 🙄 and it still should be. Totally silly to do away with it) I went with that for a few years and was relatively happy with it. But after a while, as you get better at seeing all these lines and proportions and features of your own body and how clothes sit on your frame, I realized my clothes could use a little more refinement. I reassessed and realized, whoa … wait a minute …. My arms are longer than I thought and really, I have hardly any torso at all and am all leg. I started trying more FN lines and BAM it made quite the difference for me. I felt completely at home in my clothes. I was always drawn to FN styles and lines and FN fashion icon’s styles and now I know why lol. If the SN lines don’t do it for you, trust your gut and lean more towards what were the Natural lines and try sprinkling in some FN elements and see how you go. Again, I think it’s ridiculous and just a marketing ploy to get rid of the Natural category. Not all women with width and bluntness are either soft or vertical. You might actually be a Natural.
@JuliaKirsty
@JuliaKirsty 9 ай бұрын
@@northwoodfalls1403 Yah, that's what I thought about too. Thing is, I do believe we all sit somewhere on a spectrum and maybe don't fit in neatly with just one of the image IDs. That's why I do like to look into John Kitchener's style essences too. By what I understand, my main essence would be Natural, but I do have quite a bit of Gamine plus a bit of Dramatic and Ethereal and while my overall vibe is mostly Natural, when I review pictures or videos that have been taken of me without me noticing it, I can see all of those essences within me, depending on the situation of course. And I now do understand, why I first thought I was some sort of Gamine. Even other people where thinking, I could be. I think to actually see the full picture, we need to collect more puzzle pieces than just our Kibbe style ID. If it is important enough for us, of course it's not a must do. I also got my colors done recently and came out to be Light Spring. While Naturals are adviced to stay away from shiny and glowy make up, Light Springs are adviced to stay away from matte make up and can actually wear shiny fabrics. What both have in common is that a rather blended make up look is adviced for both. And that's why I think to go with just one system and only stick to the recommendations of that might not work for everybody. We need to figure out how much of what can be added to our looks in order to create a cohesive, harmonious image, if we want to create that. Or we learn the rules in order to break them in a way that allows us to create the image we actually want to. It's fun, it's just not done within a couple of weeks. It's a journey, not a trip.

@@JuliaKirsty Completely agree with you here. It is a process. It’s good to have somewhere to start so I appreciate how “strict” some of the kibbe qualifiers are for each type only for that alone. But ya, very few of us are going to fall into one type unambiguously. We’re all a mishmash of different genetics that throw out some interesting quirks. I’ve been seeing more of the ride or die kibbe community insisting his system is all about how the fabric drapes, how a seamstress would make your clothing for you, but that often leaves people who are really into expressing themselves through their style feeling like something is missing. I agree that’s where the essences come into play and even colour theory and the seasons. There is more to us than just our underlying body structure. Even with the colour seasons systems out there, most people are left confused and dissatisfied because we are rarely firmly one or the other. Being a bright winter, I’ve discovered that I also do quite well with a lot of bright spring colours because it isn’t the specific colours that suit me or not, it’s literally the brightness that matters. The temperature (cool or warm) doesn’t matter nearly as much. I need clear colours. If they become at all muted or deepened, they begin to compete with or overwhelm me. A navy looks really good on me, as long as it leans towards a clearer blue. If there is too much grey in it, it looks meh. Grey is the trickiest colour for me because of this. It has to either lean heavily towards black or be nearly silvery. Anything in the middle is just too ambiguous. I’m mentioning all this because its a trait I have found follows through even into my kibbe or essences types. I need well defined details or a near total lack of details. Crispness or completely relaxed. Very tailored or a total sack. No pattern at all or a very large, bold, clearly defined pattern. Very minimal jewelry or very bold geometric jewelry. No makeup makeup (or just no makeup at all) or very bold smoky eyes or a very bright lip. The one exception is probably my hair. My hair always has to be somewhat messy, undone, nothing slick or tightly controlled. But I do well with either long hair or a pixie cut. Mid length, nope. Even with shoes, it’s either very minimalist and barely there (thin flip flops or very flat and minimal sneakers or ballet flats, or a minimal kitten heel) or big and heavy and chunky. ANYTHING middle of the road, muted, blended, etc. does not work on me. Figuring that out has kinda released me from worrying about things like kibbe lays out in precisely those details. Same with the essences. I know that any of the “softer” more “feminine” essences don’t suit me because the one thing they all have in common is that they tend to be more muted, more blended, softer. The yang essences suit me better because they all have more definition to them or have nearly no definition to them at all. Like naturals. Natural fabrics and lines depend on the body structure beneath them to provide the definition. The strength in the broadness provide the impact. The bluntness keeps it from being either dramatic (sharp) or romantic (soft). If that makes sense? It makes sense in my own head but it’s hard to communicate it without images lol. Anyhow, it’s all a lot of fun and very interesting and I’m glad you’ve discovered your own way through all the systems. It really should be about all of us finding freedom and confidence to develop our OWN unique style. I don’t like it when there is this whole “well, only Kibbe himself can really tell you what you are” vibe. I’m not interested in giving over my own expression to someone else’s dictates.

I'm petite 5'3" (no width), elongation in arms and legs, but also curve in flesh. I thought I was SG, but according to this video I have vertical through elongation, and SG doesn't have vertical.

Curve isn’t about fleshiness, it’s about the bust and the hips pushing out the fabric and preventing it from falling down straight. It sounds like you could be describing FG. However sometimes SG can have petite + curve + vertical because of long legs but it is rare.

Can 5’5 have vertical? Dose it mean that any height under 5’6 are not vertical or that anyone under 5’6 some of them can have it and some not? I’m 5’5 (165 cm) and I can see that I have vertical but with the what you said I’m a bit confused.

If vertical has to be 5'6> & Petite has to be 5'4< Where does 5'5 fit? Automatically DC or SC? 🤔Genuine question... I'm 5'5 (1.66m = 5.45ft) and I really doubt I'm any type of classic. I'm not balanced. The upper part of my body doesn't match the lower part of my body, for example. (Very skinny from the waist up, leggier look from the waist down, large hips). My arms also appear bigger than my body (not so my legs tho). From what I understood, classics don't usually have that "problem" since they're balanced. I really had people coming up do me saying "oh, you're soo skinny" and then they see my legs and get confused 😂 Maybe I'm misunderstanding smth, but if u could help me 😊 thank you ☺️

Vertical doesn’t have to be taller than 5’6, that’s just where it becomes automatic. You can have it at 5’5 and it’s not uncommon at all. At that height you can be D, SD, FN, SN, DC, SC and R, with TR, SG and FG being unlikely.

@@stylechat Ahh, got it. Thank you. 😊 D & SD doubt it (I'm not yang enough, for lack of a better word) And I certainly don't have width, so FN and SN are also out of the question. And I also don't seem to have curve, but I'll look into it better 😊 Maybe this part is more straight forward than the rest of Kibbie's definitions, but will you make a video about Balance? Thank u once again 😊

Metamorphosis doesn’t mention accommodations but you are right. Soft gamines can rarely have vertical in their legs. I will talk more about it in a video about soft gamines. I didn’t include it here because I was sure people will just interpret it as “SG can have vertical” completely ignoring the “petite” part.

It depends on what you considered to be “styles”, because it doesn’t work exactly like that. At 5’7 you just need a longer silhouette but it can be whatever style you want it to be. I will do videos soon on how to dress, but it’s way more loose than people think it is, except for following a basic shape you have almost complete freedom.

I think the height limits are silly. Of course if you are tall it’s most likely you look tall, and same for being petite. But I think the numbers themselves are arbitrary. At around 5’8 I’m definitely below average height for a woman where I’m from… While I’m tall where I currently live, I don’t think I have the narrow length required to make me seem tall back home. My sister is a dramatic and people always think she’s much taller than me, in reality she’s less than an inch taller. We knew the difference wasn’t as much as people said but even we were shocked by how little it was when we measured it! If I was also one of the types with vertical I doubt this confusion would happen
@Helloitsme7373
@Helloitsme7373 Ай бұрын
Well if she’s more narrow then she will have more of a vertical line. Maybe you accommodate width at the shoulders or ribcage like a FN or curves at the hips and bust like a SD
@EmL-kg5gn
@EmL-kg5gn Ай бұрын
@@Helloitsme7373 Yeah I definitely have to accommodate curve, but soft dramatics have a long vertical line too. I don’t seem to need to accommodate width or vertical. No idea what that makes me 🤷🏼‍♀️ That’s why I don’t think rigid rules make sense, silly to call myself tall when in context I’m actually short, just like it would be silly for me to say I’m not tall where I am because I’m short back home. It’s inherently relative!

@@EmL-kg5gn I’m not sure where you’re from, but at 5”8 compared to most of the world that is considered tall. I’m 5”9 and we are definitely taller than average. Kibbe is only a baseline to help you. Maybe look into TR shape like Rhianna, it’s quite possible as she is the exception to these rules

@@Helloitsme7373 Yeah it is!!! But when I go home most of the world isn’t there so suddenly I’m short 😂 I think I should focus on trying the recommendations to see what feels right. The way some clothes feel “off” is what interested me in this system, I wanted to identify the pattern to save time/money. You’ve helped me realise that I’ve lost focus by trying to analyse my body and the rules so much! It’s too hard for me to be objective when I try to analyse it but that sense that something is off is easier for me to recognise so I should just focus on that
