The ULN2003 IC contains 7 High Voltage, High Current NPN Darlington Transistor Arrays each rated at 50V, 500mA in a 16-pin DIP package. You can connect the IC directly to a digital logic (like Arduino or Raspberry Pi, TTL or 5V CMOS device) without an external dropping resistor. This IC features "common-cathode flyback diodes" for switching inductive loads. The ULN2003 is known for its high current and high voltage capacity.
The Darlington pairs can be "paralleled" for higher current Output.
The inputs are capable with TTL and 5v CMOS logic.
Now, let's deep-dive and check out the internals of the IC and how it can be used in our projects.
Thanks

This chip is easily the most underrated chip around people always bang on about the 555 but it is rubbish. As engineer I never ever used 555 for anything as there are so many other ways to do what a 555 does with less parts, however the uln2003 is just excellent drive straight out from a micro no need for anything extra, drive relay coils or higher voltages ...it is just a brilliant chip.

Great interface devices. But beware, don't go overboard...the total emitter current for the entire package is 2.5 amps...(according to the spec sheet) or .35 A/driver; and the total package is thermal limited with a maximum Tj of 125C and 67 degC per watt Tja. So, the maximum package power dissipation is 1.5 watts, meaning each output can be loaded with a 175 ma continuous load. (Pdip in free air)

correct me if I'm wrong, but in your diagrams you don't show the GROUND connection (8), or am I missing something?

That is correct The simulator did not allow me to add pin 8 (GND) pin

ULN 2000 series was standard fayre in the early '80's , driving anything from displays to servo motors. generally simple to implement and reliable 👍

The downside to darlington drivers is the voltage-drop across the device (1.3V in the datasheet) will cause extra power dissipation in the driver IC, so be sure to calculate the temperature rise from the thermal impedance info. NMOS devices with low Rds(on) are very common and inexpensive, and can drive a variety of loads, from milliamps to over 100amps with less voltage-drop/higher efficiency. The drawback to NMOS, though, is that some devices need a bit more voltage to turn them on, but that's easy enough to do with a level-shifter IC.

I have never had to worry about the voltage drop, and if you do then you should be using a different chip or MOSFET , the chip is really for driving relay coils or up to 50v switching but you are not going to be driving 500mA x 1.3v IE 0.65 watts per channel. If you did you be mad.

I wish this video had come one month earlier !!! I did not know about this IC and I rigged up this entire circuit with discrete transistors. It took me 2 weekends to get it to work. I could have saved all that effort had I seen this video before... Nevertheless, this is bookmark material, it goes straight into my saved videos list. Is there PNP version of this chip ?

This was a common stepper motor drive chip used in small school cnc lathes and milling machines in the early 90's. Stepper motor drives have come a long way since then.

These are great in my VFD tube displays. I laugh at the fact that 24 volts on the anode is considered "high voltage"! Thanks for the video.
