The Tibetan Mastiff is a primitive breed used to guard livestock. The breed is highly intelligent, highly protective, and independent thinking dog. Richard Eichhorn has a been involved with this rare dog breed since 1978, he was one of the first advocates for the breed in the United States. Very few animal documentaries will give you insight in to this breed. While at his breeding facility in the California High Dessert, we see a lot of great examples of the Tibetan Mastiff breed. The modern Tibetan Mastiff if only slightly changed from the Ancient dogs of Tibet. Because this is a landrace breed developed over centuries in Southern China, and only recently brought mainstream, this is still a healthy breed. Aloof yet alert the Tibetan Mastiff is quiet and protective of his family, This is an elite canine guard dog. The Tibetan Mastiff developed in the Himalayan Mountains and the plains of Central Asia. The breed has a heavy coat that unlike more domesticated breeds, the coat serve as protection from predators as well as the elements.

Matt Fontwell yes. Especially since he is a judge and promoter of the breed. One of the biggest dangers and disappointments for so many breeds has been the breeding for the show ring at the expense of health; intelligence, and the instincts which were selected over so many generations...only to be thrown out for dogs that look pretty!

@@haileyjarmon1876 Hailey, yes, VERY disappointed with that experience. I had no idea who he was when he came to see the dogs. He had good instincts with the dogs, and had the right type of property. Turns out that his schedule did not permit him to be home enough to be with his Tibetan Mastiff, so she has been rehomed and lives happily with other Tibetan Mastiffs from her family.

Bro my Tibetan mastiffs barks too much at night. Natural instinct. In my village in Uttarakhand everybody keeps Tibetan mastiffs due to leopard and at night whole village is like a barking orchestra. But now we have become habitual of the sounds

@Lina Pegu Only the enhanced Chinese one is different. Rest most Himalayan dogs are pretty much the same. An ancient wolf dog breed. Didn't watch the whole video but what the guy said initially about their nature is pretty darn accurate . I owned one(Gaddi mastiff) who grew to become quite large but was killed by a Tiger or Leopard. In village,we don't keep them tied. So they do have a mind of their own.

Wow, great video! Richard Eichhorn nailed it, nailed it, nailed it. My wife and I just kept giggling through the whole thing as he described our Angel perfectly. On guard dusk till dawn with regular announcements that she is on duty. "Off duty" when away from the home. 20% cat. Acknowledges that you are calling her, but not particularly motivated to come. Not impressed with the human "antics" of ball throwing. Doesn't look for trouble, but zero fear with threats. More of a supervisor than a subordinate, almost in a military sense. She takes her job seriously, and gets irritated if you don't respect that. Annoyingly and endearingly smart. You have to be prepared for 15 years of mental chess, and you had better win 90% of the time, or they will. They need to feel confident that you deserve to be in charge by demonstrating a calm cool authority with clear and consistent boundaries, otherwise they will just assume leadership until further notice. They need to feel that you deserve their respect. Angel is not a dog, she's more of a partner. She expects to have some say, and will let you know if she disagrees, complete with protests, some quite passionate. We LOVE our Tibetan Mastiff, but we rarely recommend the breed. Why? They are very special and deserve unique homes, both in property and in an owner. As they protect you, you need to protect them. They aren't just a dog, they are a treasure. Excellent video!

@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 жыл бұрын
Jay Smith I didn't pay a dime for my dog, we adopted her. I didn't know that there are people who think the breed isn't legitimate. Funny, you can spend even more on sickly dogs that aren't even capable of giving birth unassisted. Yet the ancient breed that has been tested and proven for tens of thousands of years in extremely harsh environments, with a life span double most dogs it's size, is what some people consider it a mutt, or somehow undesirable. Kind of funny when you think about it. You stick with your pure breeds, my "mutt" is just fine for me.

These dogs are not mutts and only an idiot would call them that. As for people paying a considerable amount of money for the dog, it is their money and their right to spend it as they wish.
@aaguirre453

Me Myself And I the reason that these people put so much of themselves into these dogs is because they care about and love them. They spend time with their dogs, seeing them as much more than some random animal or simple source of protection. Apparently in England, people don't really care about the animals that they have, and can't comprehend the reason that we would care for our dogs. Tibetan Mastiffs need alot of time put into their care and development, and people love and put time into them like they would a child. If people in England can't understand that, then that's pretty sad.

We all saw a huge black one in a book, and believed everything we read. But as a rare breed enthusiast, They could not be found. Teams went out all over Asia, and NOT a single one was found. The first notable Tibetan Mastiff was on the movie Mans Best Friend, just look at that dog! He is Rotty mix. Many of the first were Rot and St Bernard mixes, then would add Chow at times. I've raised a TM across the street. He's 14 months old now. Very gentle giant, friendly with all dogs and likes to sniff people. He has had ear fungus and infections in his ears since my neighbor got him so if people reach to pet his head he recoils. He's honestly the sweetest and most docile guy out there. Not vicious at all. People who keep them out all day and don't socialize them make them have the fake identity of vicious guardians.

They are very popular amongst rich people in China who want to show off. Even in Hong Kong is the same thing, they can fetch upwards of HK$ 1 million. Problem is this breed can be aggressive and your average dog owner will not be able to handle this dog given its size. We have had numerous attack cases, not just on other dogs, but actually human beings who have been viciously attacked unprovoked. They are dominant and highly territorial, if you walk past its house and for some reason if the front gate is left open, unless they are leashed, it is almost guaranteed you will be attacked.

Great doc! Really enjoyed learning about this breed. I have no intention of getting one, lol, but I love dogs in general, so it is fun to watch different people talking about the dog breed they are into. :) Keep the great work up, Dougumentary TV! :) :)

Great video Zeke! Those dogs look really good.....so nice to see breeders like this guy. Personally, I would never own one....not because I don't like them....coz I do like them...but I prefer more trainable dogs, and man....the grooming would be a nightmare.

Thank you @karen sosa I really appreciate you and the growing number of women who are watching my channel. For the most part women have proven to be polite, insightful, and constructive when leaving comments. It really balances out all the rah rah bs, I get from some of the keyboard warriors out there. :)

I've had guardian dogs my entire life but if I tripped and fell in that place, I would simply crap my pants..... Seriously well run facility, knowledgeable breeder. My father worked as an engineer on several projects in outer Mongolia where these dogs are vital for the survival of families. He said he's never been more impressed or terrified. He looked and smiled at a toddler, the 140lb+ dog moved between them and sat down facing my Dad. He got back in the Yurt very quickly.

An interesting video. Although this is not a breed that I anticipate ever owning, I've admired them as a primary form of mastiff, probably the progenitor of all mastiff breeds, for many years. Just a few days ago a man arrived at our local dog park with two magnificent Tibetan Mastiffs---one gold, one black and tan---and they were quite impressive.

WOW, does everyone believe this stupid MYTH!!! I helped make this breed in the 80's. Their was a book, ''The world of Fighting Dogs'' which first spoke of the breed, but had a fake TM picture which looked cool, but was not a TM. NO TM WAS EVER FOUND IN TIBET, NOT EVEN IN THE FOSSIL RECORD. I have been studying where Mastiffs came from, and found the Phoenicians imported them to Europe 3000 years ago. I believe maybe the instinct Borophagus from the US is to origin of all mastiffs. The Italian Mastiffs are the oldest, Cane Corso being the oldest of the two. And if you look at a skull from an Italian Mastiff and compare to Borophagus they are sooo similar, and to different from a wolf for the wolf to be their ancestor.

The Tibetan Mastiff has nothing in common with actual mastiff breeds. It’s a misnomer, they aren’t actually mastiffs and European mastiff didn’t descend from them - there‘ve been genetic studies.

You do such great interviews. I was around this breed back in the late 90's at ARBA shows in So Cal when we were showing Tosas. I remember at one show there was a male that had not been socialized well and was explosive in his kennel when anyone came too close. Left an impression on me, they are formidable dogs. Beautiful as well, I am partial to the black and tan.

I’m considering adopting a male and female mastiff, but not sure how they are with existing male Boxer and two cats. It’s a beautiful breed and I’m trying to learn as much as I can about the breed before taking the plunge. A beautiful, beautiful breed❤️❤️❤️
