So 2022 was an historic year for coin collecting... you know what I'm talking about, right. Everyone is talking about it - we now have dinosaurs on our coins!
Ok yes, obviously 2022 had much more historic events than just pre-historic coins - in fact kind of a lot happened in 2022. And we'll get to that shortly, but lets start at the beginning, with the coins themselves.
Coins added to circulation:
It was another year with lots of special designs - in fact there were 37 coins with unique designs released into circulation in 2022, plus of course the standard 6 coins.
Like previous years, there were various retail promotions through Australia Post and Woolworths that put most of these new coins into circulation.
Australia Post had their annual Alphabet set - 26 one-dollar coins, each with a letter of the alphabet, plus a special coloured X coin. The coloured X coin was not put into circulation - it was a lucky dip when you bought the complete set of 26 coins. However, it was also available to buy in PNCs at the end of the year.
Australia Post also released a second set of four coins with Australian dinosaurs.
Woolworths also had 2 separate sporting promotions with coins. The first was a set of three two-dollar coins for the Commonwealth Games with the letters A, U and S.
Then later in the year, there was a single coin released to commemorate the centenary of the Socceroos.
Unfortunately, this Socceroos coin was not available to buy, it's only available in circulation.
If you want more information on any of these coins and sets, I've created videos on each of them with lots more information.
Coins from the Royal Australian Mint:
The Mint only released 3 other coins into circulation this year:
Firstly the Frontline workers coin. It appeared in the annual 2022 Mint Set, but was not released into circulation until later in the year.
This coin was to honour the many people who supported us all during the crazy times since 2020.
The next coin released celebrates the humble Honey Bee, and it is a beautiful coin when you see it in person.
And finally for Remembrance Day in November, the Mint released this coin to celebrate 75 years of Australian Peacekeepers.
Coin Mintages - Royal Australian Mint Annual Report:
In October, the RAM released their annual report, and this really shook things up.
Pirate Guide:
With all these new coins and mintage changes, I released the new 2022 edition of the Pirate Guide at the end of the year. It covers all the decimal coins in circulation to the end of 2022, plus new insights, errors to look for and a few surprises.
You can order a copy here:
www.australiac...
Collector Coins:
As always, there were lots of collector coins released this year. While most of these coins were not intended for circulation, there are a few collector coins worth mentioning, as they may end up in circulation for one reason or another.
The first one worth mentioning is the Baby coin set. If you combine with 2021 set, you get you a "baby" version of all 6 coins from five cents to two dollars.
Both of these baby coin sets retailed for about $45 each, so it's about $90 to complete this set of all 6 coins. I'm keeping my copy of these 2 sets sealed.
But if you're noodling, keep an eye out for any of these baby coins that may have been discarded by people who only wanted to collect one specific coin.
Also keep an eye out for the 2022 Tooth Fairy $2 coin.
Of course, the most significant event this year was the passing of "Queen Elizabeth the second" after her historic 70 year reign.
It's hard to fathom how significant her time was, until you realise that every single decimal coin has had her effigy on the heads side. 2023 will be the start of a new era for Australian decimal coins, being the first time with a new person on the heads side. Obviously, pre-decimal coins have had other monarchs, but for decimal coins, this will be a big change.
There's a bit of a transition period at the moment.
Collector coins in early 2023 will use a special memorial design on the obverse (or heads side) that includes the years of the Queen's reign.
According to the Mint's website, this design will only be used for collector and investment coins. Circulation coins in 2023 will use the 2022 heads design until the new effigy of King Charles is confirmed, hopefully around mid-year.
However, there were a few coins released with the standard Jody Clarke heads design and a 2023 date, including the annual set with a vegemite one dollar coin. Based on this new info, this annual set may be the only version of these 5 standard coins with that heads design and a 2023 date. It sounds like all other 2023 standard design coins will have King Charles' effigy.
Regardless, it's clear that 2022 was the end of an era. In the meantime, happy hunting and keep using cash!

Love the Dino, Alfabet and Honey bee. The babys coins are cool but I don't think I'll pay for them, if I find some in my change though I'll be stoked.

I believe the 2023 baby set will have the standard JC effigy of QEII. Anyone know if any of the coins will be “non-standard” designs?

I was lucky enough to score many bags of uncirculated dino coins and Aussie coin hunt. Very lucky. Do you think it is worth sending them to get out into rolls and get some graded?
@AustraliaCoins
@AustraliaCoins Жыл бұрын
If you collect rolls/ if the coins are in great condition (and would receive a high grade) for sure.
