Wassup folks! I feel it's about time to put a little disclaimer over here with some info because I feel like there are some new people coming over to these vids that aren't familiar with my style and how I do things. Tone check: light and fun btw 😂 I realise I sometimes have the text tone of resting bitch face. I appreciate this video particularly is heavy on the stop and start and there are some concerns over me not appreciating the source media. To put things into perspective this ep is around 40 mins and I came out with an hour and a half of footage. This is because of the way I do things. I go back. I constantly rewind. If it seems like I'm talking over something you're right, I am. Does it mean that I miss or don't appreciate it? Nope. It would be a waste of my time and yours if I wasn't taking in the show and critiquing it fairly. At the end of the day it would be a less fun experience for you all if I kept my rewinding into the final edit. That just wouldn't work. I have been more free lately with re-showing footage to try and make this kind of thing clear but I think it sometimes gets missed. Something that also isn't really my choice but is something I have to do as a KZbinr that I think doesn't often get thought about by the viewer (why would you after all?) is copyright. I can't just show you the show uninterrupted. Lol. I'm literally not allowed to do that. I think in the final scene with Mike this shows through quite a lot as I leave in arbitrary 'right's a lot to break up the scene. I wish I didn't have to do this. It doesn't add anything and my choice would be to not do this as much. My decision making process at that stage is either showing you more of an amazing scene by breaking it up or just omitting large parts of said amazing scene which I'm sure would garner comments of 'why didn't you show more of that?'. In this case I hope you appreciate I'm doomed if I do or doomed if I don't. Not really many good options there, but I hope that at least clears up the WHY of why I do that. Anyways, let me assure you when you see any video of mine I've watched most scenes more than once and this always amounts to consuming the scene as it was meant to be. I appreciate this doesn't always translate into the viewing experience everyone wants, but there ARE reasons for why I present things the way I do. I'll end with saying that Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are unique on my channel in that they're tailored like this because of feedback. They all have above 95% on the old like to dislike ratio because I've catered to this audience for a while now and I know what's wanted, so with that in mind the format of these videos isn't going to change. They're my most indulgent videos for stopping and starting and talking, so if you like elements of this but not the whole I'd encourage you to try my Buffy series or my newly started Haunting of Hill House. While stopping and starting/analysing is a staple of my channel my other content is much lighter on it and might be more your speed ✌

Personally, after seeing that last scene of Mike talking about what happened to his son, I can't help but think that was the origin of Mike's attachment to Jesse, and I can't help but feel perhaps on a subconscious level, Mike saw a little bit of Matt's purity of heart and resilience in Jesse, and that's why he became the mentor/sort of father figure to Jesse that he was in BB. Mike says that Matt "agonized" at the prospect of doing the wrong thing, just like Jesse constantly did in BB. Mike says "he was the strongest person I'd ever known" because no matter how crooked the environment around Matty was, he still fought to remain good, which is something Jesse also did (even though Jesse does bad things in BB, it is undeniable that he fights for the survival of his humanity every step of the way). At the end of the day, Matt being so good in a crooked environment gets him killed, which is what would've happened to Jesse if it hadn't been for people like Mike and Walter that foiled those attempts time after time. I think Gus definitely wanted to use Jesse as a tool to make Walter obsolete, but what attracted Mike to Jesse was that he recognized he was a good person in a bad place, who was strong enough to fight for his soul, just like Matt had.
@TD0150 Жыл бұрын
That's also what makes Jesse's ending even more beautiful and cathartic, because, in a way, Jesse getting to live free was Mike redeeming himself from beyond the grave. It's easy to write off Mike's ending as completely tragic and vain, which it is in its own right, as everything he did for his granddaughter was for nothing and she'll have to grow up knowing her Pop-Pop was a murderous criminal. But I don't think Mike's story ends when he dies. Jesse was his last shot at redemption, and while he'll never know it, he rescued his last boy's soul. That, to me, is the reason they chose to open El Camino with Mike giving Jesse the idea to go to Alaska.

I adore neo-noir, probably my favorite genre overall. And Better Call Saul definitely leans into noir-style filmmaking and storytelling, but with this episode it leans HARD. Jonathan Banks' performance in this is exemplary. He didn't get an Emmy but he did take home a Critics Choice award for his role in this episode.

A hallmark of BCS is its "show don't tell" storytelling. There's very little/no exposition. The writers don't hold the audience's hand at all, they just drop us right in to the middle of an ongoing situation and trust that we'll eventually piece it all together and figure out what's going on. Most other shows would've added a cheesy nonsensical line in the beginning like "Stacey, you're my daughter in law. You married my son. You need to trust me" etc. Excellent analysis again btw, I 100% agree with you on ACAB.
@sallyatticum Жыл бұрын
I love shows like this that trust their audience to get it. So many shows these days, in the US, at least, I characterize as "pretty people saying things and doing stuff" and the director rushes from one plot point to the next, spoon feeding the audience. It's sooo boring to me! I love these shows that just let the story unfold in whatever time the character and the story requires. It's wonderful.
@aisling_commoddities Жыл бұрын
This episode really is great. Not a lot of stories about police corruption out there, and in this series all about the law, it's a brilliant maneuver to make this point early on. It's not just lawyers that can be crooked. This is many people's favorite of the first season, but not mine. Despite the action, the stakes have yet to rise to their fullest.

This goes a long way to fixing what I always thought was a silly part of Breaking Bad. Mike is so upset he can't give his granddaughter half a million or whatever on her 18th birthday, and it seemed like "what's the big deal? Most of us don't get that on our 18th birthday". But now we know he was trying to atone for getting her father killed.

I was amused by your curiosity as to why Mike's daughter wasn't the guardian of his granddaughter. It reminded me of that old riddle: A man and his son were in a car accident and the man died. But I just spent 4 weeks on a grand jury with tons of cops as witnesses, and the level of dedication and due diligence to due process provided to accused suspects was very impressive. ACAB isn't remotely fair. For one, you can't condemn someone as a bad person simply for not quitting their career, livelihood, and potentially safely because of the actions of some others in their precinct. You wouldn't apply that standard to anyone who isn't a cop or something similar - you can say "they should be held to a higher standard", but people are people. We don't angels available to be our police forces, we just have people. Secondly, any country (especially the US) has an absolutely massive population and an absolutely massive police force. All the hundreds, even thousands of news stories you hear about awful police actions and officers only amount to a tiny percentage of the overall population. To me I think that "higher standard" attitude is just an excuse for bigotry against the police. And I don't use that term lightly. Because it's the exact same logic I've seen an actual racist use. They had some bad experiences with people who happened to be black, and heard a bunch of stories about black people doing bad or stupid things - and formed a racist worldview of "there's something wrong with black people" from it. It's the same thing with ACAB. You can't judge an absolutely massive group of people off of news stories and/or a few bad personal experiences. No ill will Tyler, I love your videos and think you're pretty smart - but I think you're very wrong on this.
@terracotta34534 Жыл бұрын
ACAB isn't about every single individual cop being evil, it's about a corrupt and compromised system.
@saulgoneman Жыл бұрын
Yeah, if all you see and hear are the negative stories, its going to seem like cops are just rat bastards all around. But its just as easy to only consume positive stories of cops saving children, or showing lenience to a pregnant woman, or any number of other heroic or kind things - and then come away with a thin blue line cops are all heroes mentality. People need to be more aware that when the scale of something is as large as "police interactions in a country of over 300 million people", just watching whatever bodycam footage or reading whatever headlines your political bubble feeds you can't encapsulate what police are as an entire category no matter how much you consume.

I believe there are good precincts free of curruption, but yeah I would never trust any city cops. If a Precinct is currupt it goes all the way through, and there are definitely serious needed first of all I think is a law that makes it so cops who report other cops can't be retaliated against by the higher ups, I mean that's something Walmart has. but yeah I think there are good precincts kept in check by good leaders who keep them clean.

Well…I think you will look back on this reaction someday and be sorry for it. This is an amazing episode that is completely about Mike, his pain, and future motivation. It is in no way a social commentary on police corruption that you would like it to be, and forcing it to be that, completely ruined the point the episode was attempting to convey. It was frustratingly almost unwatchable. Cops aren’t perfect and there are bad apples, but they are people just like you and me, who have children and families. But unlike you and me, they have a group of people who hate them for trying to protect and serve ungrateful idiots whose minds have been warped by propaganda and the media, and coupled with intense scrutiny, it makes their jobs almost impossible. We are all “bad” in different ways. But dividing people into groups where one gets compassion at the expense of the other, is not altruism. It’s crooked thinking and dangerous. Very disappointed in this reaction.
