The Best Defqon Anthem is still Scrap Attack for me. The melody, the breakdown, the kicks, the vibe... everything about that song is just perfect!

It just all turned around when Heady started to come into his prime. He really set the benchmark for hard sounds, baselines and of course melody. The scene has evolved so much it's insane. The sound design now compared to early 2000s is ridiculous.

Yeah, there was a split from the oldschool/classic/original Hardstyle which is now known as Early Hardstyle after Headhunterz made Nu-Style a pretty big thing, although he isn't the only artist who majorly influenced the change. This basically split Hardstyle into two directions. A good example of a Nu-Style like track would be the 2006 anthem, "The Colour of the Harder Styles" by Showtek, it already got some features of modern Euphoric Hardstyle, with a pretty strong climax and rather happy melody but still a oldschool kick. One of the two directions after the split would be Raw Hardstyle, with steady hard kicks that mostly don't change much in pitch, dark atmosphere and either no or reverse climax, more closely resembling Early/Oldschool Hardstyle like the first few anthems. The other, of course, is Euphoric Hardstyle, with bright as well as happy melodies, a strong climax and often easy to memorize lyrics for a crowd to sing along, like the later anthems, especially 2011 and onwards.

He mostly changed the way hardstyle melodies were written well before this anthem. Power of the Mind was already a big jump for melodies and pitching kicks. The 2008+ changes were done alongside Wildstylez and NC. Screeches and hard sounds were already in (HHZ used to use a lot of sample packs e.g. scrantraxx roots screech was from a sample pack), but he showed people what else could be done with FX later on. What he did with this anthem was create a sound and style we all associate with HHZ and can still hear in some of his music today and set a standard for what modern DQ anthems should be. On top of that, he helped improve the nu style kick with NC (NC eventually being considered the gold standard until raw). Original rawstyle was basically the same as early hardstyle but with all the modern improvements, eventually using 'harder' versions of the nu style kick before eventually clipping like they do today. Especially considering Zany/Donkey Rollers more or less discovered the nustyle kick. Euphoric was a very big split, and it took over hardstyle for a long time. Unfortunately raw is the standard now. I remember a lot of people claiming that euphoric nearly killed hardstyle, only for raw to be the dominant sound today. Even euphoric songs use raw kicks now. I miss the vanilla hardstyle kick :') Also, props to you for noticing the kick in Colours of the Harderstyles! A lot of people miss that one. It's one of my favourite kicks!

Yes. The BPM has also been turned up slightly. Now it's all about the drop. Real hardstyle from back when the music was underground rave music was slower, heavier and much more beautiful. I can still have fun with today's music, but the golden era is long gone.
